Happy for Mark. Hopefully he'll win another before this year is over.

This is always subjective so it's hard to say who is the greatest. NASCAR has a list of the 50 greatest drivers as picked by people associated with the NASCAR world.

There are three that jump right out at you, two simply because of the numbers, one because he's still driving. They are Richard Petty with 7 Championships and 200 wins, Dale Earnhardt with 7 Championships and 76 wins and Jeff Gordon with 4 Championships and 72 wins and still a youngster compaired to Petty and Earnhardt's careers. There is a 4th that many don't consider, that being David Pearson who has the highest winning percentage of 18.29%. He won the championship 3 times in 4 attempts. He did not run full seasons through most of his career. He and Petty finished 1-2 63 times with Pearson winning 33 to Petty's 30. He is also second on the all time win list with 105.

Some argue against Petty and Pearson because they got most of their wins in a different era. Some say the same thing about Gordon. Earnhardt spanned both so the arguement doesn't work for him either way. Both Earnhardt and Gordon have won on all types of tracks making both great all around racers.

Gordon is still to young to seriously be the "Greatest" but he deserves consideration among the other three.

4art,

Jesus was never a NASCAR driver.

I own a copy of the Official NASCAR Encyclopedia which has every driver who ever raced in the top NASCAR series, he's not listed.

PS, I didn't really have to check

IDOLATRY is making anything other than God absolute. Therefore, God must be the greatest NASCAR driver or you are not worthy of him.

Isn't the Official NASCAR Encyclopedia called the "Bible" of NASCAR?

I don't worship NASCAR drivers.

It is actually called "The Stock Car Racing Encyclopedia"

I myself prefer the choice to act responsibly in the childbirth issue.

If the pro-choice and pro-life people put half the money and energy into educational programs that they do in fighting each other, this wouldn't even be an issue.

4Art,

Abortion is a medical proceedure, not a birth control. Birth control comes with education and being responsible for your actions. You don't send your kid out to drive without training them how to do it correctly. Fixing the crushed front end is a lot more expensive than spending some time teaching.

Like I said before, if half the money and effort from both these groups were invested in education, this would not be an issue.

Everybody in the world has a right to choices. Wether i agree with thoes choices or not. If the religious right wants to feel they have a devine responsabilty to lower abortion rates why don't they create a social saftey net that caters to they financial hardships any more of giving birth. I have known very few women in my life that gave up a baby because they wanted to it was mostly because of financial circumstances with her and her family. And all the grief it caused and emotional strain and guilt the young lady had to go through.

You got that right glass. I think its time NASCAR puts Goodyear on notice. Build a tire thats good or we'll find someone who can. This tire issue has been around for months now. Its time its stopped before someone gets hurt.

i'm glad Mark made up some points, but not like this...
i guess it's no different from the crapshoot at "dega and daytona tho....
Mark had some advantage with his 'sperience and his style of saving his equipmnet/tires he's always been cautious on new tires so he can save them for long greens.....

don't like it that JJ won, but he overcame a lot of adversity i gotta take back that wussy statement i made last(?) week, until he starts whining again anyway [Big Grin]

glass, thanks for taking out the trash on the thread above.

My luck this week in the race pool was pretty bad, I had Tony and Sadler. It figures that the one week I get my driver, he collects the wall. The messed up thing is Sadler did the exact same thing Tony did, in the same manner. I actually thought I was gonna collect this week.

From the past??? the king and Earnheart(AND YES EVEN THEY HAD OFF YEARS). rank up as two of the all time greats next to JG

I can not count Kurt Busch in an elite field, he needs to show some consistency in running up in the front at all kinds of racetracks. He isn't a great roadracer, and hasn't been much to watch at the superspeedways. He is a good short track racer though. He did win the championship due to the new race to the chase scheme last year. I don't believe he'll win another one anytime soon. Time will tell. If it wasn't for the race for the chase last year, Jimmie Johnson would've won the chapionship last year and Tony would've had it locked up this year. The new chase scenario has definately made racing more interesting as intended.

Tony held up well... if he doesn't have a mechanical failure, he's got it... too bad JJ got that caution before he could go a lap down [Big Grin]

Yep, well, he was a lap down briefly. Jimmie's crew was probably hollaring at Nascar for debris on the track. It's kind of funny how Nascar waited until Jimmie was the lucky dog before they called the caution. I wonder how long that debris was actually on the track before they brought out the yellow? I wonder if they are trying to keep the chase for the cup alive until the last race of the year? Coincidence?

Mark Martin proclaimed Tony Stewart the best driver of his era.

there ya go Peaser....

have to admit that i was glad to see JJ lose it....

i think things would been a little different if Mark hadn't been "taken out" by JJ at Talladega.....

Tony woulda had to try a little harder yesterday..... and he may have been able to do better but he may also have lost it...
i din't like it much when NASCAR threw the yellow for debris twice when Tony was about to go a lap down tho.... but that's racing... [Big Grin]

all in all? good sesaon.... maybe Mark will get it next year.....

I'm a Gordon fan so my season's been pretty much crap.

I was hoping to see Edwards pull it off, not sure what happened there at the end with his pit stop. Not that it would have made much difference except for finishing second.

i woulda like to see Edwards win it too...but Tony did earn it... he surprised me in the "chase" he really showed maturity and consistency...

Edwards has got an All-American face, adn a great attitude (that we can see, anyway)... i think he's gonna be good for the sport.....as long as he doesn't pull a muscle doing his back flips, he should be around for awhile....

can you imagine him still doing them at 40? [Wink]

Agreed that Tony earned it unlike Busch last year. I do not like the new format, I don't know anyone that does yet they constantly assure us that the fans love it.

Edwards is a nice guy. Somewhat quiet. He's engaged to an olympian although I don't recall what sport, so the athleticism might stick around past 40 for him. I've met him twice to shake hands and get an autograph, no serious conversations.

Edwards seems like a genuine person and someone that has not taken a haughty attitude due to his stature in NASCAR. He will be a fan favorite over time I believe.

Congrats to Tony, thanks for posting that info from MM on Tony glass. I was happy to see JJ blow a tire and wreck as well.

Did anyone see the piece where Marcus Giles of the Atlanta Braves rode around with Jimmie Johnson? Well, it was great at the end. Giles accidently told the viewers to go to Home Depot at the end of the segment if they need to fix something. That caused an explosion of laughter from Giles and JJ from the folly. Giles realized what he had said a second too late. I was ROFLMAO. Just in case folks don't know Jimmie Johnson is sponsored by Lowes, and Giles was decked out in Lowes racing gear. It was great.
