Baby in stroller stabbed on New York street
NEW YORK (AP) -- A knife-wielding man stabbed a 10-month-old baby in her stroller, critically injuring her, police said.
Isabelle Avins was rushed to a hospital where she underwent surgery Wednesday night. She was listed in critical but stable condition, police spokesman Detective Brian Sessa said.
At the family's request, the hospital on Thursday declined to provide further details.
The nanny was walking with the baby around 5 p.m. when the man approached them a short distance from the girl's home, Sessa said.
"He just came out of nowhere," witness Hennessy Arias told the New York Post in Thursday's editions. "The baby was hysterical, crying. ... She was crying and trying to gag for air."
The nanny, identified only as a 20-year-old woman, screamed for help and cradled the baby.
Isabelle's father, Jon Avins, also praised the nanny.
"The babysitter saved her life," he told reporters outside the family's apartment building. "She's like a member of our family."
Bernard Derr, 48, a man with a history of psychiatric problems, was taken into custody a short time after the attack and held on attempted murder and other charges, police said.

It's a shame they won't do it but they shoul just throw this guy into general pop. and let the rest of the inmates who are in there with kids at home deal with the dude.

Good one art. just put him into the system so we can take care of him for several years then someone can let him go and maybe it won't be a member of your family that he attacks or kills

I agree with Art as long as life in prison means until the day the criminal dies and the time is spent doing incredibly hard and demeaning labor with no TV or any other link to the outside world and really bad food. I think the death sentence is letting these guys off too easy. Also, I have heard that with the appeals process it costs more to execute a prisoner than it does to sustain them for life.

Actually that was my point. There should be an Express Lane for particularly heinous crimes.

I don't think it is so much an eye for an eye. I think of it more like let's save someelse. Let's not let this type of criminal attack some other helpless person.

Killing them (or having the State kill them for you) is indeed an eye for an eye. Locking them up for life is enough to achieve your stated objective.

That reply was just non-sense. What correlation to my statement warrants a mention of Hitler? Hitler perpetrated Genocide, Hitler was guilty of Heinous acts, not his victims.
BTK killer heinous. Jeff Dahmer heinous. John Gacy heinous. Terrorist act heinous. That's what I was referring to.

We could free up a lot of that prison space by decriminalizing soft drugs. It is nothing short of hypocrisy that our prisons are stuffed with pot smokers, yet alcohol and tobacco manufacturers are not only legally pushing their product, they are in fact subsidized by the Government.

I wonder if more people would be willing to play by the rules if they knew prison would be a harder place to live in then the outside world.

I am in favor of public hangings. And lets start with the liberal judges letting the scum back on streets............. If prison actually meant prison, then we may be ok. But prisons as we need, do not exist anymore. Just a pipeline to put more crime back in our society.......

look i know the death sentence does not work the question is why is a man this sick out on our streets if you can't cure him and are going to let him out that in it self is a crime under these conditions he has got to go it not nice and certainly not a moral thing to do. you know sometimes life is just not easy but people that damage it or take it cannot be tolorated
