My 21 year old daughter, and her Surfer boy friend, are leaving their good jobs in Kailua Kono Hawaii to hang out and surf in Costa Rica. They plan a 4 month trip beginning in June..... Is my daughter heading into big trouble?

Art...They are not going to a City..The area they are going is very rural..Tin roofed shack right on the beach. Hours by bus from San Jose...I am concerned about rebel forces in rural area's...The surfing I don't have a problem with..

Just tell them to very very careful. I have a good friend who is a weapons dealer and business is booming for his company in that region. They are legit and only sell to governments with state dept approval. I am not allowed to say which country or what they are selling. I also have friends in the PSD community who work down there. They get paid more for working there than in Iraq. Once again, that is all can say about that. Just so you know, I am not BSing you. I have been offered jobs in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Columbia.

i don't have any direct experience in Costa Rica, but one of my glass-blowing students went there for a whole summer when she was 18... this was a bout 4 years ago, and she loved it... she spent most of the time away from the tourist areas with an outward bound group...they were all over the place.. i recall her being more worried about the snakes than the bad guys.. "fere de lances" i think they are called..
unfortunately, i don't have a way to contact her at this time.

I think it's like the travel dept. or something like that. Give me a chance, I am trying to e-mail a buddy of mine and get some more info for you.

I haven't heard back yet, but I did check the State Dept website. Here's a little INSUM for you, hope it helps. Basically, it seems safe, but Central America makes me personally nervous. Anyway, the gist of what I got was that there is some robbery of people. Rarely violent but there is an increasing propensity to use both hand guns or shoulder fired weapons. There are occasional pro-labor protests, but they tend to be peaceful. There are no travel warnings posted for Costa Rica, but there are for Brazil and Columbia. For the most part it seems like any run of the mill semi-peaceful third world country. Good Luck! And if I hear back from buddy I'll PM you with any info he can give.

At least it's not Columbia, Brazil, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc. I have been forbidden from going back to the Middle East or South America. My girlfriend and family are convinced I'll come home headless.

HILANDER...This is just to much!...Man, they are heading into some of the hottest fishing, surfing, hiking adventures left on this planet!!
I am going to take measures to insure the Embassy in Costa Rica knows where they are. I am taking this action only because of the extremely remote region of Costa Rica they are heading..The man I spoke with down there laughed ,but he agreed..Something about the conversation did give me a little pause...I think they are keeping an eye on the coming and going of Americans in certain areas...I know you understand the value of backup in that part of the world..Well, I think ole Dad got some.
glassman, the Rooster fish average 40-60 pounds.

That's a good call with the embassy. I am sure they will find other Americans or Europeans to hang out with. Speaking of fishing....My buddy up in Alaska e-mailed me with pics of a couple of Rainbows they caught. 36 inches long and about 18 pounds. One was chrome!! The other was a little darker but still awesome. These fish were the size of small kings or large silvers. Where I fish up in Canada, they only get to about 10 or 11 pounds! The biggest one I've seen was about 14.
