I heard that 16 cents out of every tax dollar goes towards paying for the intrest on the national debt. I know we live in a time where everyone expects taxes to be going down but shouldnt they be going up? I was curious if you guys think increasing taxes a little on everything and having all that go towards the debt would do much for it? For example: make stamps 2 cents more expensive, add a 10% Cigarette tax, raise sales tax by 1%. Could a plan like this solve the debt over many decades?

Well, the deficit could be taken care of almost single handidly by toning down America's ridiculous and unneeded defence spending. Spending billions on technology that isn't needed won't be as effective in a war on terror as a CIA agent with a passport to anywhere in the world.

Well i think to pay of the defecit today would take something like 115,000 per household to pay off. It's just a major problem that needs to be solved soon

Increase taxes and slow down economic growth, which will increase the deficit, requiring more tax inxcrease, which will slow down economic growth, which will increase the deficit, and so on. Increasing taxes is a way for government to waste more money, which all governments do well.

Reduce taxes which promotes economic growth, which will increase tax paid to government, which will reduce the deficit. However, this must be done with spending cuts, not in defense, but in wasteful and ineffective programs which flourish in any government. We have to cut off the parasites (welfare and other special interests) in cutting government spending or we increae parsitism, which increases the deficit over time.

Defense is something we can not cut, though Canada can, since they have the U.S. to defend them from a war.

They are overtaxed now. 5% of taxpayers pay most of the taxes now. That is communism - robs from those who earn it and gives to parasites who didn't earn it. Destroys the economy and the nation. Go to Cuba where they tax the rich really severly.

One percent of the U.S. population owns sixty percent of the stock and forty percent of the total wealth. (Hawken, Paul, The Ecology of Commerce: A Declaration of Sustainability. New York: HarperBusiness, 1993).

hmmm... Your right art hard working people who work two jobs at minimum wage and still cant support there family are "parasites who didn't earn it." Im not saying to tax them so hard that they become poor. Art you like to twist words and take everything to an extreme

Art, that isn't communism for crying out loud. Those extremely wealthy individuals earn their enormous fortunes on the backs and freedoms of this country. Don't paint them as victims of unfair taxation. They are doing great.

Defense spending is out of control and inefficient.

Income re-destribution is clearly based on the communistic idea of "each according to their need" which tries to equalize earnings. The rich are rich because they work harder or more efficiently. They are either more motivated to achieve, smarter, or luckier than the the poor and deserve what they get in a capitalistic system. Such a system is the best available to increase the standard of living for everyone, includng the poor.

Defense spending is wasteful, but less so than in other areas of government spending like in education.

Anyone who earns and pays taxes is not a parasite, assuming the are not on welfare and not criminals. Such people give more to the nation than they take from others the opposite of a parasite.

For some reason, an anamoly in our terrible tax codes, the top 1% in income pay few taxes, on a percentage basis, relative to the rest of wage eraners, but they do pay hefty taxes on an absolute basis. This has been left alone by both parties, likely because that top 1% contribute heavily to both parties.

You seriously don't think America's defence budget could use a trimming? If America spent 1/2 of what it did now, you would still be exponentially more powerful than your closest adversaries, only you wouldn't be piling on the snowballind debt like you are now.

Watch it Art and other devout right wingers... if you keep ****ing over the WORKING poor like your doing, Hillary is going to be your president in 2008 when Bill will also be the UN secretary general. The Clintons ruling the world isn't something you want is it?

If we don't have a big defense budget then we may lose our nation to disaster. Only a fool (i.e., liberal) leaves themselves undefended. Case in point, N. Korea is arming nuclear misiles and Iran is close behind. The anti-missile technology that we are developing is very costly, but for any U.S. leader to cut off spending for the anti-missile program is irresponsible on their part.

And yes, Hillary will likely be the next president, and this country will become more socialistic, and our standard of living and prominence as a world power will go down.

How do you think they came into power? When it is elected and not mandated monarchy, yes, that is a Democracy.

No our prominence as a world power declined after we pissed away our moral high ground and foreign policy opportunities post 9/11. You think we are *less* vulnerable now? lol.

Hilary is the enemy of standard of living? WHO's standard of living. Not anyone who actually works for a living. I'm not a huge fan of Hillary, but I am certainly not going to buy into the big lie that Bush is helping the working man.

"How do you think they came into power? "

Sponsorship from their corporate overlords? In order to keep out the Ralph Naders of American politics?

True to some extent. Special interests, which are not just limited to corporations (trial lawyers formexample), contribute to both Democrats and Republicans, and this influences many votes. But it is still voting power, and monarchial standing, that determines U.S. political leaders.

Corporation backing is not necessarily a bad thing - a smart government will support business since business growth raises the standard of living for all.
