The third tropical depression of the eastern Pacific season formed yesterday in the eastern Pacific. The system strengthened to Tropical Storm Bud overnight. Bud was located more than 600 miles south of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, as of 2 a.m. PDT. Some slight intensification of the storm is likely as it churns toward the WNW or W over the next couple of days, remaining well away from land.
The Atlantic Basin is fairly quiet. There's a tropical wave east of the Lesser Antilles, but it remains weak and disorganized. Further development of the disturbance is not expected in the near future. Meanwhile, upper-level lows are spinning northeast of the Bahamas and in the southeastern Gulf of Mexico. The lows are triggering numerous showers and thunderstorms over the Bahamas and in the Florida Straits and Keys, but no additional development of either system is anticipated.

Meanwhile, in the western Pacific, very large Tropical Storm Bilis is spinning east of the Philippines and slowly gaining strength. Bilis is forecast to become a typhoon within about 24 hours as it churns in the general direction of northern Taiwan. Its effects could be felt in Taiwan by Friday (U. S. time).
