Tuesday, October 31, 2006 By Glenn Coin Staff writer The new casino at Vernon Downs brought in nearly $700,000 in its first three days of operation, track officials said. It posted the highest revenues per machine on opening day of any of the eight racetrack casinos in New York, according to track officials and the state lottery. About 15,000 people came through the doors during opening weekend, said general manager Eric Persson. "Our attendance exceeded expectations," he said. "We were busy, and everybody seemed to enjoy the machines." Town Supervisor Myron Thurston said the traffic reminded him of the Oneida County harness track's heyday several decades ago. "All I know is that Friday evening my wife and I rode by there, and I'm telling you, the parking lot was stuffed and there was a steady stream of cars going in and a steady stream coming out," Thurston said. "Route 31 looked like it did back in the '60s when Vernon Downs was booming." When the casino opened at 10 a.m. Thursday after several years of delays, about 1,000 people stood in line to play the 777 video gambling machines. According to the lottery, Vernon Downs brought in $696,227 in revenues from Thursday through Saturday. Sunday's figures were not available; the lottery records revenues on a Sunday-through-Saturday week. Vernon Downs averaged $381 in revenues per machine on opening day, Persson said, the highest in the state. That's more than the $341 per machine on opening day of Tioga Downs, which had been the highest in the state until Vernon Downs opened, Persson said. [/QB][/QUOTE]
