Stocks rose on Tuesday, February 10, 2004. The blue ships Dow Jones industrial average advanced 34.82 points (0.33%), to 10,613.85. The broader Standard & Poor's 500 Index ended up 5.73 points (0.5%), to 1,145.54. The technology-laced Nasdaq Composite Index closed up 14.76 points (0.72%), to 2,075.33.

Trading was moderate, about 1.39 billion shares changed hands on the New York Stock Exchange and nearly 1.65 billion shares were traded on Nasdaq.

Bonds were lower, the 10-year note yield rising to 4.10% from 4.07%.

"I think the past few weeks have shown resilience in the market," said Russ Koesterich, U.S. equity strategist for State Street Corp. "Volume is a little low, though, and I would probably want to wait for the big money to come in before making any big moves."

The most active companies were SIRI (+0.12-0.37), Sun Microsystems Inc. (+0.02-0.33), CHPC (+1.09-0.26), Cisco Systems (+0.11-0.25), JNPR (+1.18+0.16), Lucent tech (-0.08+0.13), AWE (-0.05+0.02), Nortel networks (-0.10+1.24), General electric (-0.39).
