i was actually up at delphi this week for business. dang was it depressing, felt realy bad for those guys - morale very low, as you might imagine. one guy i talked to had 50% of his 401k in delphi stock - 50%! ouch.

moral of the story: diversify, diversify, diversify...

Never gonna happen, blue. You can't trust the public to be reasonable with investments. Not even if those investments are for their retirement. Even if you could, as we know, it's damned hard work and isn't something that "we" reasonably can demand that the public take on in order to have a retirement.

no question bdgee, i hardly expect the average grandma or whoever to be able to ie discerningly read an 8K.

but - is pretty easy with many companies now to put a 401k on "autopilot" by picking just one simple "lifestyle fund" or whatever that diversifies for you. fidelity and most other fund companies these days have a generic fund where you just plug in your age and put it all in one age-appropriate fund, which of course is made up of chunks of mutual funds and other investments. that way, you don't have to know diddly about the market to still diversify in your 401k investment.

Yes, that sound wonderful. But, if empowering the "average Joe" to handle finances because there are companies or services that will do it right for him was a successful financial tactic, run away credit card debt would not be a danger to our economy.

Sadly, even the well educated, as is obvious from the present day condition of the average family's savings, are easy prey to the sing-song of advertising. For every future retiree that has the wisdom or good fortune to find a suitable finacnial service to manage his investments, there will be a dozen that fall prey to crooked services and another dozen that will "handle" their own by playing the markets part time (following brother-in-law Billy Joe's advice) or by socking it all away for safe keeping in the company stock.
