Health Discovery Corporation Announces New Patent Issuance
Tuesday September 20, 9:33 am ET
Issued Patent Covers Support Vector Machine Pre-Processing Methods

SAVANNAH, Ga.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 20, 2005--Health Discovery Corporation (OTCBB:HDVY - News) announced today that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office issued HDVY its latest SVM-related patent, Patent No. 6,944,602, entitled "Spectral Kernels for Learning Machines." The new patent covers a novel pre-processing technique for use with SVM's that was developed by Nello Cristianini, a recognized authority in the field of SVM and co-author of the widely referenced book, "An Introduction to Support Vector Machines." The patent describes and covers spectral kernels, based on the mathematics of spectral graph theory, which are useful for pre-processing of data in supervised and semi-supervised learning, as well as for clustering of data in unsupervised analysis. Spectral kernels can be used in conjunction with SVM's as well as with other types of kernel machines.

"This most recent patent issuance on the SVM pre-processing technique further strengthens the company's already significant position in the rapidly growing field of pattern recognition technologies," said Stephen D. Barnhill, M.D., Chairman & CEO of Health Discovery Corporation. "For an early stage company like HDVY, our biggest asset is our intellectual property portfolio and each new patent considerably strengthens the company's balance sheet and licensing prospects. In addition, it's very important to note for all of our stakeholders that this patented SVM technology is not just limited to the realm of cancer research. The technology also holds significant application potential in other sizable commercial market niches such as Homeland Security for fingerprint and face recognition, financial futures and securities, Internet search engines & spam e-mail detection, diagnostic radiology and others. HDVY is vigorously pursuing licensing arrangements in all of these markets where our technology is applicable."

Commenting further, Dr. Barnhill noted: "Many of the world's leading companies have incorporated SVM technology into their product development and research applications. In the information technology segment, both Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT - News) and Oracle (NASDAQ:ORCL - News) have employed SVM technology for text categorization and data mining. In the biomedical and pharmaceutical markets, is used by Abbott Laboratories (NYSE:ABT - News), Bristol Myers Squibb (NYSE:BMY - News), Roche (VTX: ROG.VX), and Pfizer (NYSE:PFE - News) in such areas as gene expression, toxicity data mining and cancer diagnostics."

HDVY's new SVM patent also covers a method of pre-processing data referred to as "kernel alignment." The kernel alignment technique has been adopted by a number of researchers in the field for use in feature selection and kernel optimization. Kernel optimization is important for ensuring accuracy of classifications performed by SVM's and other learning machines. Feature selection methods are critical in reducing processor run-time when analyzing high volumes of data, such as those encountered with gene expression data and related information for discovery of biomarkers. By eliminating those features that are either duplicative or non-critical to the successful classification of the data, both accuracy and time efficiency are improved considerably during processing. Additional claims to kernel alignment methods and their applications are pending before the U.S. Patent Office.

Health Discovery Corporation now holds the exclusive rights to 14 issued U.S. and foreign patents and more than 50 patent applications covering uses of SVM's for discovery of knowledge from large data sets. The issued patents cover methods and systems for the pre-processing of data to enhance knowledge discovery using SVM's, analysis of data using multiple support vector machines and for multiple data sets, and for providing SVM analysis services over the Internet. HDVY's U.S. and foreign patents cover numerous improvements to and applications of SVM's including HDVY's MetastaSIGHT(TM) product for identifying circulating tumor cells in the blood of breast cancer patients and HDVY's MammoSIGHT(TM) for computer identification of breast cancer utilizing mammography. HDVY's patent portfolio includes newly discovered biomarkers for colon cancer, prostate cancer, BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia), leukemia, AIDS and renal cancer. In addition, applications include the use of SVM's for analysis of spectral data, such as mass spectrometry data used for protein analysis.

Founded in September 2003, Savannah-based Health Discovery Corporation is a systems biology-oriented biomarker and pathway discovery company, which provides all aspects of First-Phase Biomarker Discoverysm. Health Discovery Corporation was established to provide pharmaceutical and diagnostic companies with a broad range of analytical and decision support solutions to produce more efficient and cost-effective diagnostic and drug discovery tools.
