Defeated Cantor says he won’t try a write-in campaign

'I am a Republican and proud of that,' he tells staff and former aides

Republican House Majority Leader Eric Cantor told key aides and trusted former staffers on Wednesday that he will not try his luck with a write-in campaign after his shocking GOP primary defeat at the hands of largely unknown tea party-backed economics professor Dave Brat.

"I am not going to do a write-in. I am a Republican and proud of that," a source familiar with the Virginia Republican’s message quoted him as saying in a closed-door meeting.

The source, who requested anonymity to describe the private get-together, described Cantor as “the most upbeat guy in the room.”

Cantor’s defeat counted as one of the most shocking upsets in congressional history. Brat, who recently spoke to Yahoo News columnist Matt Bai, had raised not quite $300,000 against Cantor’s $5.4 million but thumped the majority leader 56%-44%.

No matter what, Cantor's House career as he knew it likely ended Tuesday. Even if he had launched a write-in bid, it is very unlikely he could have maintained his leadership position. Republican primary voters chose someone else and his continued presence in the GOP leadership would have risked discrediting the team entirely.

Though there is little precedent for such an upheaval and a subsequent write-in bid in the House, the 2010 case of Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska makes clear the tension between running as a write-in and being in leadership.

Murkowski was ousted from the Senate GOP leadership team on which she served after making the announcement she would continue to defend her seat after losing her primary. Her successful bid to hold onto her office created deep unhappiness among leaders and she was not invited back to be on the team after defending her seat.

The principle difference, however, is that senators still can have a significant impact on policy and politics as rank-and-file members. In the House the rank and file have little power, and such a come-down would be a potentially devasting day-to-day experience for a man who openly dreamed of being Speaker.

update Cantor steps down as majority leader of the house.

I can't say that i support anything in particualr that the TParty represents other than they recognise quite clearly that our system is broken.

The Tparty has offered the dems an opportunity t take control of all the federal govt for quite awhile to come.

Here in MS? Thad Cochran is going to run-off agisnt a TParty person in a couple of days. Thad has been in DC bringing home the PORK for about 30 years now and all it has done is make MS a more miserable place (IMO). I have watche first-hand how depndance on Govt loans(that never get paidback) and subsisides and grants make people lazy and ignorant. I don;t know to be more blunt about it.
Sadly, the TParty people are not going o stop with getting rid of waste fraud and abuse, they will cut deeply into the things the Feds do well for the country too....
The Dems couldn't possibly ask for a btter partneer than the TParty.

I am not a Tea Party guy, but I dont disagree with them on states having more control, limited government, and term limits.

It seems like if you are against the TP you are pro big government and global governance.

Sure you are a tea party guy cash just look at you post. What are you saying that you agree with the tea party on the basics.

I think there is a civil war brewing in the GOP and I hope it spreads.

Hopefully the defeat of Cantor lights a fire under other Republicans so they will understand that the party has become to vague on its message...and what's wrong with being a tea party Republican?

Cantor wasn't really beat by Tparty person. My undertanding is that the guy who beat him only spent 165,000$ on his campaign versus 5 million. The TPartiers are bettter funded than he is. In MS right now we have a Tpartier running against Thad Cochran in a runoff primary. The Democrats are hoping to slip one over on the GOPs if he wins. If a Democrat wins in MS? The GOP's will be in full collapse. I doubt it will happen, but....

Nothing is wrong with it. Ray and other libs find what is going on in this country far more appealing. No accountability. The same lens they screamed through over Bush has vanished over Obama. Like I say, Obama could get caught kicking baby bunnies behind the WH and people like Ray would spin it somehow as how he was helping the bunnies. Thats how far gone some of these people are. They know nothing about leadership.
