Insurance company State Farm is suspending its sponsorship with the Los Angeles Clippers after racist comments allegedly made by team owner Donald Sterling surfaced over the weekend, the chief executive of the marketing company that counts State Farm as one of its clients announced on ESPN Radio’s “The Herd” Monday morning. State Farm issued a statement Monday saying that while its sponsorship was not formally ending, it would “take a pause” in its relationship with the team.

In the audio recording posted by TMZ, a man the site claims is Sterling told his girlfriend that he didn’t want her to bring black people — including NBA legend Magic Johnson — to his games, and Deadspin obtained further audio that contained even more racist comments.

“The remarks attributed to the Clippers’ owner are offensive. While those involved sort out the facts, we will be taking a pause in our relationship with the organization,” State Farm said in an email statement. “We are monitoring the situation and we’ll continually assess our options.”

The statement said that the company has “a great relationship” with Clippers point guard Chris Paul, who appears in State Farm ads alongside his alter-ego, Cliff Paul. But that agreement is separate from the one with the team and won’t be affected.

Rev. Al Sharpton and others have called on other companies to quit sponsoring the team until Sterling is no longer the owner too, and it’s possible more could follow.

Sterling’s racism is attracting the attention of NBA players, fans, and now sponsors, but his history of racism isn’t new: he has reached two multimillion-dollar settlements in housing discrimination suits, both of which alleged that he wouldn’t rent apartments to black or Latino tenants, in the last decade, and he faced an employment discrimination suit from former general manager Elgin Baylor in 2009. Still, give credit to State Farm for taking action now — as players, owners, fans, media, and sponsors continue to take notice of Sterling’s bigotry, it makes it increasingly hard for the NBA to look the other way as it has in the past.

Update

Carmax has also officially announced an end to its nine-year partnership with the Clippers. “CarMax finds the statements attributed to the Clippers’ owner completely unacceptable,” the company told TMZ. “These views directly conflict with CarMax’s culture of respect for all individuals. While we have been a proud Clippers sponsor for 9 years and support the team, fans and community, these statements necessitate that CarMax end its sponsorship.”

And more could be coming, according to Sharpton:

And the NBA just gave him a lifetime ban, fined him 2.5 million and is contemplating an attempt at forcing him to sell the team.

Don't get me wrong, the man sounds like a piece of chit but does this punishment fit the crime? His comments were made in the privacy of his home in what he thought was a private conversation. The racist comment he made was telling his girlfriend to stop bringing black men to Clipper games with her.

Correct me if I'm wrong but here in America aren't people still allowed to have thoughts and views like Mr. Sterlings or has that freedom been stripped away from us too? These days we strive to be tolerant of all types of people.....as long as they fall within the tightly defined parameters of "acceptable" that someone dreamed up. Step even a toe out of the box and you're an outcast and will be severly punished for your thoughts and words.

That's not my kind of America.

Many knew he was a real piece of work long before this happened. Like guys like this don't talk anytime before this, especially if he drinks?
There doesn't seem to be a lot of comments about the girlfriend and the wife situation, wonder why?
Maybe to many others would fall into this catagory in the NBA.
Again he is a real piece of work, but aren't a lot of employers?

Why didn't these players put up a real protest and walk off the job? It did not have to be a team effort, one could start and see who follows.
Turning around their warm up jerseys and talking, that's the best they can do?

They don't want to lose any money and the hype they could get from the playoffs.

I like watching the playoffs, but could live without them. There are lots of guys that fall into the same catagory as this owner on both sides, doesn't make it right, but it is reality.

He just made a big mistake of ticking off his girlfriend, and the family filing a suit against her, aparently she said she would get even and it appears she did, he should lay off that young stuff at his age.

Their was several reasons i never like the clippers and he was one of them.

That's where the outrage should have stemmed from if there truly was one, the players and the paying public. Neither one cares though, the players collect their millions and the public has a winning basketball team, all is good.

Who really cares if some crackpot owner goes on a rant about an ethnic group? No one does until the media turns it into something so far over the top that the "offensive" person has to be harshly dealt with. This guy is now paying one hell of a steep price.

That's not my kind of America.

Guy is an ignorant old bag isnt he? However, what happened to him because of his statements just seems off. Its like the Mozilla CEO who was shredded by the gay mafia for something that he did 6 years ago and was not a big deal.

He is going to fight his penalty by the NBA in court.
I'll bet he wins. I assume he will fight it on the basis of free speech. He will never be back anyhow.
