House Republicans Plan Two Month Vacation, Leaving Key Bills Awaiting Action
By Josh Israel on Sep 14, 2012 at 6:34 pm

House Republican Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) announced Friday that after next week, the House will stand in recess until November 13. His plan for a nearly two month vacation will undoubtedly allow more time for campaigning, but will leave several vital bills awaiting action.

Among the important legislation the House will likely not address before the November elections:

1. Violence Against Women Act re-authorization. Though a bipartisan Senate majority passed the a strong re-authorization bill in April, the Republican House leadership refused to allow a vote on the Senate version of the bill. The House passed a watered down version on a mostly-party lines vote, leaving victims to wait for House action.

2. The American Jobs Act. Republicans have been blocking President Obama’s jobs legislation for more than a year. Though House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) promised in 2010 that a GOP Congress would focus on job creation, he has blocked this bill’s immediate infrastructure investments, tax credits for working Americans and employers, and aid to state and local governments to prevent further layoffs of teachers, firefighters, police officers, and other public safety officials.

3. Tax cuts for working families. In July, the Senate passed a bill extending tax-cuts for the first $250,000 in annual income. The Republican House leadership has refused to consider the bill, holding it hostage to their demands for a full extension of Bush-era tax cuts for millionaires.

4. Veterans Job Corps Act. The Senate is currently considering bipartisan legislation to help America’s veterans find jobs. The Air Force Times reports that the Republican House has “shown no interest” in the legislation to support those who served the country.

5. Sequestration. A spokesman for Boehner said earlier this week that stopping budget cuts he voted for last August “topped our July agenda and remains atop our agenda for September.” While House Republicans have complained about the imminent spending reductions and passed a bill that would require President Obama to find offsets for spending cuts they don’t like, Republican Leader Canter could not name a single compromise he was willing to make to get a deal.

6. Farm Bill. Despite strong support for a 5-year farm bill from even conservative groups like the Farm Bureau Association — the House leadership has not scheduled a vote on the bill. The current law expires September 30. Without passage, 90 percent of the work of the Department of Agriculture could be defunded.

7. Wind tax credit. The Senate may act next week to renew an expiring wind energy tax credit. Despite bipartisan support — including from original author Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA), the Examiner notes that the House is unlikely to pass the renewal. Despite GOP calls for energy independence, the expiration has threatened the wind energy industry and already led to job cuts.

These, in addition to drought assistance, postal service reform, addressing the Estate Tax, cybersecurity legislation, fixes for Medicare reimbursement rates and the Alternative Minimum Tax, and all 12 of the FY 2013 Appropriations Bills remain unaddressed.

Four years ago, Republicans objected when then-Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) adjourned Congress for a five-week August recess without bringing up their energy legislation. Rep. Ted Poe (R-TX) shouted “Madame Speaker, where art thou? Where oh where has Congress gone?” Now, they plan a two month vacation, even if it means allowing vital programs to expire and working families to suffer.

Sounds like they are about as productive as the Senate.

Dollar is being devalued, unemployment still high, and commodity prices are going up. All those promises in 2008 have come true!

cash, what alternatives were/are there?

seriously, you wanted the Chinese owning GM?

the only thing that Obama has done wrong IMO is not to go after the people who committed fraud and putting htem in ajil for long long time..... the problem with proving fraud is that intent is difficult to prove, in other words, people can claim incompetence in these cases which is mostly not criminally punishable... but all this stuff they've done to "fix' the economy is not really optional..
the teabggers who decided we should let it all fall down were asking for China to come in and buy up the uSA in fire sale.. that would have bene unaccpetable too.. there was literally no cash anywhere, and i don't know where it all wnet, but i suspect ti went to China for the most part and that was not Obams fault either

i was listening to Dave ramsey the day he decided to "switch" over from bailouts to letting the economy collapse...i heard him announce that he was changing his mind.Fact is? he's just wrong about this. I follow his family-personal planning pretty closely myslef, but country is not a family or a business. China was the ONLY game in town with the cash to buy in- you don't really want a Chinese landlord do you? cuz that was the only other option

Nobody is willing to do anything until after the election.

Don't be coy CCM, this is calculated. Neither party is interested in showing any sign of weakness until after the public has spoken therefore they recess so they can't make any public missteps.

Quite frankly, I am surprised it doesn't happen at every election. It's not great but at least this much is honest.

I want to see Obama pounding the podium demanding the closure of the biggest tax loopholes. Still dont see it. If he spent more time talking about that than taxing incomes over $250,000 I would probably vote for him.

all those loopholes were written in by lobbyists and special interest people cash, dem and GOP....
he needs to raise everybodies taxes 1% per year for five years to fix this, but nobody will vote for him if he did..
we can all live with that if we can PLAN accordngly.. 1% up on taxes, 1% down on spending till we balance and pay back most of the debt...
carrying 25% of GDP as debt would be just fine...

face it, this mess is everybodies mess. sure they are bunch of effups up there, but eh GOPs made the tax cuts "temporary" for good reason, and this political mess is it... if it were business deal? they'd call it apoison pill. it was put in to make people get wierd at election time and it's working they're all crooks. everybody wants something for nothing..

I just love how you rationalize everything about Obama. Obama could pretty much kill someone and you would be able to find a way to bring in the GOP, or reasons why Obama had to do it for the greater good.

So what if lobbyists and special interest people wrote the loopholes. Is this not the change Obama spoke of? The utopian life that was promised in 2008 of how everything would come together and work out?

Is it not the right thing to shut down the evasion and loopholes? If it is sooo hard to do so, why not be more vocal to the people about it like a good President should? So what if it makes his own Democrat party mad if he shuts it down. Sure, John Kerry and his misplaced yacht might not like it but its the right thing to do.

What about insider trading by congressmembers? Why is Obama not screaming to high hell about that? Its legal for insider trading for congressmembers, but if you and I do it we go to prison? Where is Obama on that?

Oh thats right, all the loopholes were written by lobbyists and special interest people so I guess Obama has no blame. This President should be crusading against these issues. Not hiding them from conversation.

cash...u are in over ur head. relax, take a pill. vote rommel and be happy. Nothing u say or do will change anything...but if u are so concerned and frustrated and still confused, even after glass has explained nurnorous times, then run for office and work from within. organize block parties and make some speeches, volunteer at your local gop headquarters...hell..*****ing endlessly on a board has not done a thing good for your party..I would venture to say that none of your arguments have changed anyones mind, except negatively towards you and your beliefs. Politics is not your game, my friend. Mine either, so don't go there.

seriuosly cash? you're just not very bright. i've posted plenty of stuff about Obama that he's done WRONG.

if you and your loser gop friends ever bothered to critisize Obama for what he actually did wrong? you wouldn't be losing now. it's that simple. instead, you and your loser party have followed the Rove political Rule #1 which is lie about your own weakness and attack the other guy on his strengths twisting them into something wrong.

this is fact. it worked for Bush, but everybody including you felt STUPID afterwards. the sad truth is that 4 years later? you are one of of the very few that actually cannot figger out how you got used and abused, and you want to keep doing it.

INSIDER trading congress is legal and has been FOREVER. Obama cannot stop that, the constitution does not allow him to do it and if you had nay brains you would know that cuz we discussed here about a half dozen times since i've been here. screaming bloody hell is how you lose political arguments.
