CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (WHDH) -- The mayor of Cambridge has proposed a ban on larger sizes of sugary drinks.
It has been a hot topic ever since New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg tried to ban the sugary drinks.
Monday night, the city of Cambridge agreed to study the possibility of banning large sugary drinks at restaurants in Cambridge.
Customers at Cambridge restaurants could soon have fewer options to quench their thirst.
“When people are served these gigantic portions of soda in bottomless cups, sometimes it’s just more than people are able to resist,” said Cambridge Mayor Henrietta Davis.
“The government is going too far with those things. It’s the people’s choice to do what they want to do,” one man said.
Sound familiar? They got the idea from New York City where Mayor Michael Bloomberg wants to ban restaurants, movie theatres, food carts and even sports arenas from selling sodas and other sugary drinks bigger than 16 ounces -- all to fight obesity.
“I don’t think it’s a good idea. It limits business and it limits people’s choices,” a woman said.
But others say something has to be done to slow down the obesity epidemic.
“I think it’s sad that it’s gotten to that point that people are letting themselves go the point that the government needs to intervene,” a man said.
The health committee will study every aspect of the possible ban and report back to the city council who will make the final decision.

I say we ban televisions and couches as well...
Mandate the purchase of exercize machines with a 'penalty' for every home owner that refuses...we'll offer financial assitance to those that can't affored it by raising taxes on the wealthy...
All food will be required to be subject to strict 'calorie vs nutritional value' regulations to be sold within the U.S....
And finally...BMI will be a measure of one's patriotism...only thin, healthy people will be able to vote...
Welcome to America...Land of the (used to be) Free...

So they want to ban sodas, but not drug testing to receive federal tax dollars in food stamps?
I wonder where occupy stands on the elitist move to control what you put in your body. I mean, its a "womens right to choose" what she does with her body when it comes to ending the life, but SODA? Oh hell no!

this all began 100 yrs ago friends. not last week.
that's why i put up the original coca-cola formula... it's all an extension of conservatism, not liberalism. the nanny state began with the pure food and drug act... by 1911 the FDA was even going after the coke co for caffeine which had been used to replace the cocaine---

So not wanting to have cocaine in soda is a conservative problem?

LOL. this why American politics is a not-so-funny joke anymore cash..
the "power" to ban big gulps derives from the same power to ban alcohol weed coke opiates and yes they even tried very hard to ban caffeine whihc would have made tea and coffee illegit...
the political will to do that was based in the Conservative movements of their time. note that alcohol was removed from coca cola too.. the Temperance movement was anything but liberal

Oh ok got it, so the Democrat mayor of NYC bloomberg, and Democrat mayor Davis of Cambridge, MA are enacting conservative policies.
I think at one time glass that may have been the case, but today it is not so. Look at San Fran and their whack jobs banning happy meals at McDonalds because toys are put in them so kids will want to get the meal.
