Bond, most virus scanners don't find all infections... It could have already happened to you and you'll not even know.

it really comes down to what you have on your computer as to whether you should worry.
i have to buy a new video card right now for one of the games the brats just bought.
i also had to add another gig of RAM to two of our computers because of new software that they just could not run well.
at least RAM is now down to about 20$ per gig. five years ago? i paid 5$ per megabyte

Yup, I remember a few years ago upgrading from 16 to 32 megs of ram and it cost me over a hundred.

I upgraded the memory, cpu and bios in my computer and it still maxes out the CPU's fairly easily, any suggestions.

Not completely sure of all the computer language.
I upgraded the cpu chip and had the bios upgraded.
I tried to download the upgraded bios on to a disk off the internet, but could not get the disk to load properly, so i brought it in and someone found a different website and downloaded it off that one.
My son looked at the cpu chip that i put in and said it was plenty big and that i am only using a quarter of my memory... story of my life
He played with it a little, but did not have enough time to go into it further.
I am using Microsoft XP, and pretty much anything i go into on the internet maxes out my cpu's, as indicated by the task manager.
One thing i was wondering about, is whether i have to go into the system and reset anything when i upgrade.
Someone suggested that i might need a new motherboard, this computer is 3+ years old, might not be worth it at this point.

it maxes out only on the internet? you prolly have a ton of spyware on 'puter.
click your start button,
click on all programs
click on accessories,
click on system tools,
click on disc cleanup,
cleanup drive C this will remove alot of temp internet files.
then go tocontrol panel and use window update to get windows defender or just go here:
one of the brats 'puters was doing this too, and i found three different anti-spy ware system running on the computer, so go thru and remove all of them except windows defender.
running multiple anti-spyware apps can use up your CPU very fast.

Just reinstall the operating system. Back everything you want to keep on dvd's or cd's and reload the operating system. If you haven't done it in the last three years then Glass is right... you have a tonne of spyware and other creepy crawlies. You will never be able to clean the system after three years. It's easy.. I did it already today.

Going to buy a lap top and make sure i make a disk right off.
Did not do that on this one.
I use McAfee and Adware now and adware just eats up the cpu's by what the task manager shows.
Will switch, if it isn't already there.

i have been able to clean them up without re-installing, try defender and the windows updates.
windows does shut out most of the spyware and viruses as they discover them, from their point of view? the spyware and viruses are exploitative of their product.
if you do not have explorer as your default browser? you cannot get automatic windows updates. that causes the most problems that i've seen, users switch to firefox as their default browser and they suddenly don't get updated anymore and they don't even realise it.

Maybe a good registry cleaner as well before you do a O/S re-install. Lotta good free ones out there. This is in addition to what glass already recommended. GL!

Iwish good luck with your lap top I looked for a year before I found what I needed.
Good advice from the guys I just get pissed off and do a complete wipe out and reinstall to the best of my ability or if I really get pissed I by a new cpu

Ray I agree.. The only way to keep it running right is to just wipe it and start over. I keep a separate drive where I keep all my stuff and use the other just for the OS... when it gets sluggish I just reinstall... Now a days it only takes about an hour to get it back up and running.

I dual boot with Ubuntu and Windows 7. Unfortunately Blackberries don't sync with linux so I have to keep a windows partition.

OK, now i'm interested, how is 7? is it a full OS, or just communications OS? if it's a full OS, is it less of a ram hog than XP?

Xp is faster for running programs... 7 is faster at pretty much everything else. Arguably the best windows release yet. Still a virus magnet but that's why I reinstall every month or so. Just look on the torrent sites. The latest build is 7600 I believe.

Yeah anything you get from a file sharing site needs to be scanned for nasties. I do all my downloading from linux.
