U.N. issues landmark report on global warming
Panel offers dire warnings, establishes scientific baseline for political talks
updated 4:49 a.m. CT, Sat., Nov. 17, 2007

VALENCIA, Spain - The Earth is hurtling toward a warmer age at a quickening pace, a Nobel-winning U.N. scientific panel said in a landmark report Saturday, warning of inevitable human suffering and the threat of species extinction.

The report also offered blueprints to avert the worst catastrophes. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said climate change imperils "the most precious treasures of our planet."

The potential impact of global warming is "so severe and so sweeping that only urgent, global action will do," Ban told the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change after it issued its fourth and final report this year.

Big...,

I share you concern with the horror of gloal warming, but there will be no effort to actually address this problem, which is obviously far more important than Iraq or Iran, or whatever else, as it has become clear that with approach to the 08 elections, the republican propaganda and hate machine, in effort to smoke-screen facts and side track honest consideration of real problems, is spending millions to train the public that all their attention must be focused on a "smoke an mirrors danger" of immigration.

It is already obvious that the usual cacophonious shrill fear mongering call of the republican party loyalist is in full dress-parade formation and they are, with obedient Party line puppet-like loyalty that ignores the welfare of the Nation, spreading huge amounts of ultra high decibel trash talk about immigration to overwhelm the reason of the public and make them believe immigration is THE major danger to our existence.

this is the ONE problem which affects the whole world, and it should be the biggest cause for concern. However, it wont be until "THe day after tomorrow" happens.

Yes, you are right, "it wont be until "THe day after tomorrow" happens".

In the mean time, those that could make a difference are busy bragging about their betting on football games, playing "I remember" about movies and TV, reading through the latest issues of "House Beautiful", concentrating on the most recent O.J crap,......and blaming the high cost of gasoline on Iraqis, specifically, and Moslems, in general, instead of demanding that their congressmen or women get busy funding research and development of non-fossil fuels yesterday at the latest.

The problem is that the "Day after Tomorrow" is never going to happen.

There will be no grand rush of water or single day ice-age maker. It'll happen slowly and steadily and people who don't want to believe will find reasons to say it isn't happening even as evidence continues to mount.

The public is waiting on the politicians and the politicians are waiting on the public.

It's the same bull**** we always see but this time we can't afford the time-line. Every year we wait on the front end of combating this is going to add 25+ years to the back end of getting through the damage done. By our inaction during the Bush administration we have already condemned a generation to an increasingly unstable global climate.

Person's are smart...they know when they need to stand up and shoulder responsibility in their personal lives to get things done.

People are stupid...they are all standing on the sidelines and every one of em has to at least acknowledge that something ain't right but they keep waiting for someone else to step forward and shoulder the responsibility.

That ain't gonna work this time.

There are actually some people out there trying to use other methods to help the enviroment. The gov and big money(many times combined) makes it so hard to follow through with anything.

A friend of mine's employer has had a system in place to use hydrogen to run his plant. It was set up by a scientist and they ran it for him last week. They are still waiting for the approval from the government but no one will come to inspect this system so they can use it in production.

Thery are using the algae from a near by stream to run one generator and the exhaust from the first generator is used to run the second generator(not sure about this part). I do not know if this friend of mine got the process completely straight and i have not read much about this to really know. But they do have this system ready to go. The question i do want to ask him the next time i talk to him, is will this system they set up cost less to operate than the old system.

Things are changing.
Anyone who expects the whole world to stop using fossil fuels overnight is delusional.
Relax guys the 24/7 fear mongering is working.
Just as planned.

I am waiting for the day when we can really see how much oil is worth when we start getting more alternatives. These guys(oil cartel) just keep sucking up our money for the benefit of a few. Another monopoly that supposedly does not exist. Way beyond time to slow down this junk and help the enviroment at the same time. To me it is just a win win for most of us.

Oil is worth a bunch, even if we can find ways to avoid using it for energy production. Coal too.

In fact, it and coal are far too valuable to be wasting them heating and propelling things. Without them, plastics become impossible to manufacture on more than a minor scale and, essentially, almost all of what we recognize as "modern necessities and conveniencies" will cease to be, thus ending modern civilization.

We MUST end the use of fossil fuel now, to save an environment without which humans cannot survive and to allow coal and petroleum to be put fully to use for the manufacture of plastic.

(And if you read this and think it is posted as a joke, the real joke is the lack of depth of your thinking.)

Like Relentless said, things are changing but it's going to be a slow process. The masses are being conditioned as we speak through *feel good* television ads, newspapers, etc. Just watch the strides that are made during the next few years. It's technology that's been in place for years but it's going to hit the consumer market over the course of the next decade.

As much as some would like, I don't think you can put the big oil companies out of business with the flip of a switch. They are going to be our energy providers, be it filthy or clean and they'll be given time to adapt and change. And it's not gonna be cheap either. Eventually we'll have a "clean" society but anyone looking for a cheap alternative to oil is delusional. We're going to pay a premium for it, like it or not.

I agree that we will not see big oil companies going out of business in the near future. But i would like these big companies and our representatives to allow alternatives to move along at a quicker rate than they are doing now.

These big oil companies have been making sure more efficient ways to use fuel are put in the garbage can since gas was $.29 a gallon and i am sure even before that. I know it is a way for them(oil companies) to preserve their business, but there is no way our representatives have to help them acheive their goals.

We need to overreact(some feel this way) in order to try and move this problem into starting to be get solved. I do not feel we have "really" started much to this point. Although compare to previous decades it is definitely an improvement.
