Residents Smuggling Smokes From Other States
Smokers Try To Avoid New Cigarette Tax

POSTED: 9:05 am CDT September 21, 2007
UPDATED: 10:33 am CDT September 21, 2007

"It was immediately after it took effect,” said an employee at the store.

Under Tennessee law, residents can bring two cartons of cigarettes from another state every time they cross the border.

But since the tax hike, officials from the Department of Revenue said the limit is being ignored.

"We're just trying to make it a level playing field. We just want to educate the people and have them know it's illegal and not to do it,” said Department of Revenue official David Remke.

The Department of Revenue said it will have agents on the lookout in Kentucky for people loading their cars with cartons of cigarettes, and once they cross the state border, they'll be pulled over and ticketed.

"I think it's our money. We should spend it where we want, when we want,” said smoker Elaine Hendrix.

Hendrix, of Mount Juliet, said the government shouldn't be snooping.

"This ain't Russia or nothing like that. We should do what we want. This is America. This is what it stands for,” she said.

the limit is actully NOT two cartons... it's 19 packs, two cartons will get you busted, and they can prosecute people for buying 2 cartons and apparently they are...

i think other states should sue Tenn for conducting "surveillance" in their state..

Yeah, their just trying to level the playing field for the people that cant afford to support their habbit that the government has been gouging for DECADES.

19 packs huh? Why the odd number? Why 1 pack off of two cartons? As if to encourage potential fines?
