LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Investigators questioned O.J. Simpson and named him a suspect Friday in a break-in at a casino hotel room involving sports memorabilia.

The break-in was reported at the Palace Station casino late Thursday night, police spokesman Jose Montoya said. He said investigators determined the break-in involved sports collectibles.

''When they talked to him, Simpson made the comment that he believed the memorabilia was his,'' Montoya said. ''We're getting conflicting stories from the two sides.''

Simpson was released after he and several associates were questioned, but he is considered a suspect in the case, Montoya said. He is believed to be in Las Vegas.

''We don't believe he's going anywhere,'' he said.

The Heisman Trophy winner, ex-NFL star and actor lives near Miami and has been a tabloid staple since his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ron Goldman were killed in 1994. Simpson was acquitted of murder charges, but a jury later held him liable for the killings in a wrongful death lawsuit.

Simpson has had to auction off his sports collectibles, including his Heisman Trophy, to pay some of the $33.5 million judgment awarded to the Goldman family.

On Thursday, the Goldman family published a book about the killings that Simpson had written under the title, ''If I Did It.'' After a deal for Simpson to publish it fell through, the family bought the rights and retitled the book ''If I Did It: The Confessions of a Killer.''

Investigators in the casino case planned to give their report to prosecutors Friday, Montoya said. The district attorney's office will decide whether to pursue charges.

Simpson had been scheduled to give a deposition Friday in Miami in a bankruptcy case involving his eldest daughter. But it was rescheduled because Simpson had told attorneys that he would be out of town.

Patricia Jones, a woman at the Florida office of Simpson attorney Yale L. Galanter who identified herself as Galanter's associate, said Galanter was out of town and had been forwarded messages seeking comment.

The Palace Station, an aging property just west of the Las Vegas Strip, is one of several Station Casinos-owned resorts that cater to locals. The 1,000-room hotel-casino, with a 21-story tower and adjacent buildings, opened in 1976.

A company spokeswoman did not immediately return a call for comment.

What a shame so many shattered lives. The Goldman family never seem to let it go as far as money is concerned, they do not seem to have much class from what i have read. The kids are the ones that really had to bear the brunt when going through school and when around other kids. Remember how on top the world OJ was so many years ago. There are quite a few people getting rich off of this one, some smiling lawyers.

AMERICAN football legend O J Simpson was behind bars in Las Vegas today on armed robbery charges, 12 years after being cleared of double murder in a trial that transfixed the world.

Simpson, an iconic athlete of the 1970s who became a hate figure following his acquittal for the brutal stabbings of his ex-wife and her friend in 1994, was arrested following a robbery at a hotel in the city last week, police said.

Las Vegas Police Department captain James Dillon said Simpson had been charged with two counts of robbery with a deadly weapon, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, conspiracy to commit burglary and burglary with a firearm.

If convicted, Simpson could face a lengthy jail term. Each robbery charge alone is punishable with up to 30 years in prison.

"This morning after a careful review ... the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department decided to effect the arrest of OJ Simpson," Capt Dillon said.

Simpson, who was arrested at his hotel, was transferred in handcuffs to the Clark County Detention Center to spend the night in prison, reports and officials said.

He is likely to be arraigned at court sometime in the the next 48 hours.

Simpson is accused of involvement in an incident at the Palace Station casino last Thursday, when a gang of men, including at least one brandishing firearms, stormed into a hotel room and snatched sporting memorabilia from two dealers.

The dealers, Alfred Beardsley and Bruce Fromong, have been quoted as saying that Simpson was the ringleader of the group.

Simpson was initially quizzed over the incident late on Thursday before being released, police said.

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times today, Simpson brushed off the incident and said he had not done anything wrong.

"I'm not walking around feeling sad or anything. I've done nothing wrong," Simpson told the Times, apparently while lounging beside a swimming pool. "I'm having a great time."

Simpson said he and some friends had gone to the hotel to reclaim personal possessions, including photos allegedly taken by Nicole Brown-Simpson - who he was accused of murdering - and sports souvenirs.

He said the meeting with the sellers of the items was set up by a friend who had been suspicious about how the items were obtained.

Simpson told the Times he accompanied some "golfing buddies and some of their friends" to the meeting to help him reclaim his belongings.

He denied that he or anyone else in his group was armed.

"I'm O J Simpson. How am I going to think that I'm going to rob somebody and get away with it?" he said.

"You've got to understand, this ain't somebody going to steal somebody's drugs or something like that. This is somebody going to get his private (belongings) back. That's it. That's not robbery."

Simpson's arrest followed a series of raids carried out by police following the arrest of an associate of the former football star on Friday.

Capt Dillon said information gleaned from Walter Alexander, who has also been charged with armed robbery, led directly to Simpson's arrest.

During the raids at separate undisclosed locations two guns and sporting memorabilia were recovered by detectives, Capt Dillon said.

Four other men with Simpson during the alleged robbery were being hunted, he said.

Simpson, one of the most famous American football players of his generation during the 1970s, was the prime suspect in the 1994 murders of his estranged wife Nicole and her friend Ron Goldman.

Nicole, who had filed for divorce from Simpson in 1992 citing his "abusive behaviour", was attacked so savagely that she was almost decapitated.

Simpson, who has always vehemently denied the killings, was acquitted of them after a racially charged Los Angeles trial in 1995, a verdict that was greeted with widespread outrage across the US.

He was subsequently found liable for the deaths in a 1997 civil suit and ordered to pay damages to the victims' families totalling $US33.5 million ($39.86 million).

Nicole and Ron's murders don't have a bearing here. Just get over it.

I smell a setup and O.J. is stupid for letting it happen.

AP Exclusive: FBI was told of O.J. Simpson plan in advance
November 02, 2007 16:15 EDT

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- According to FBI reports, federal agents knew three weeks in advance that O.J. Simpson and a memorabilia dealer were planning a sting operation to retrieve items Simpson says were stolen from him.

The reports, obtained by The Associated Press, say dealer Thomas Riccio told FBI agents in August that Simpson wanted to televise the operation.

Special Agent Linda Kline writes that Riccio was advised at the meeting -- which took place in Los Angeles -- to contact a lawyer before taking any action. She also notes he was told that alerting the FBI would not absolve him of any potential crime.

Simpson and five other men were arrested in September after they allegedly stormed a Las Vegas hotel room. Simpson is facing an assortment of felony charges, including armed robbery and kidnapping. Three of his co-defendants have made plea deals and agreed to testify against Simpson.

On being selected to serve on a jury:

I've been through the drawing procedure for criminal cases where every xth person is selected and sent to the stage were the actual attorneys ask questions a number of times. In each case, I was asked about my written reporting of my educational experience and, when I assured them it was correct that I have a lot, immediately the prosecutors asked the judge to dismiss me from serving and that request was granted.

In the two instance that I reached that stage for a civil case, the questioning attorneys followed the queries about my education with questions about my voting records (they are not allowed to ask about party affiliation, only if you participate at the poles). They waited until I said I tried always to vote before asking that I be dismissed.

Interesting? No scary.
