the next presidential election should be set up like the american idol format, we'll start with about 20-30 candidates and use 3 judges just like the show to work down to 10 finalists( candidates will be asked to answer a question in a 2 minute format, americans will vote off the worst candidate each week until we get down to 2 finalists - and then a ballot vote like normal)

americans would become involved in politics like never before and might actually learn something, voting would most likey increase on the final vote, and much better chance to have the best person win the presidency

this process could and would be no worse then what we have currently, but the results would be better for all !

you'd have to throw in some drama and scandals to keep it interesting... politicians and the media should have no problem with that .. lol

Replacing your "3 judges" with the "major news networks", isn't this already in progress?

and which one will have "no formal training" lol

I don't think there is formal training that can equip one to be a president.

it was an american idol joke bdgee.. a few years ago there was a heartthrob named william hung who was famous for sucking really bad and saying "i've had no formal training"

but now that you mention it it would be a good idea to have a training course for would-be presidents, including, but no limited to, economics, history, foreign cultures, memorized the bill of rights and the consitution, english, must spend 2 weeks as a border patrol agent, an in depth study of all major wars and the fallout therafter... feel free to add your own at any time.. [Smile]

No, it is never a good idea to have any formal requirements, other than those within the Constitution, for any position or honor in this society.

Standardization is a process of 'dumbing down" not breeding excellence.

Standardized legally required testing of students assures nothing else will be presented or allowed within thee system and only those students willing or inclined to be intellectually submissive (if such a condition is not oxymoronic) can earn the "credentials" to be "permitted" to achieve later in life. A not dis-similar constraint is imposed on the political process by establishing (formally or informally) uniform standards for "membership" as an "acceptable candidate".

(Just because the title "1984" is a date in the past doesn't mean it isn't still packed with important lessons and questions for each new generation to ponder. It is prophetic.)

ron paul has moved to the front for the republicans imo and would be a great man for the job

wikipedia-

Paul advocates a limited role for the federal government, low taxes, free markets, a non-interventionist foreign policy, and a return to monetary policies based on commodity-backed currency. He has earned the nickname "Dr. No" because he is a medical doctor who votes against the bills that he believes conflict with the Constitution.[1] In the words of former Treasury Secretary William Simon, Paul is the "one exception to the Gang of 535" on Capitol Hill.[2] He has never voted to raise taxes or congressional pay, and refuses to participate in the congressional pension system.[3] He has consistently voted against the USA PATRIOT Act, the Military Commissions Act of 2006, and the Iraq War.

he is a rare breed, one of the few and only to speak his mind on capital hill regarding obvious cover-ups gone bad to sure government stupidity

....the american idol format is appropriate for our presidential election and in fact the current process is really a lame watered down version anyway, that disinterests voters( intentionally)

lets bring it to tv, just like the show goes down now, voter interest, topic and political knowledge would increase immensely nationally and many will actually get their first true glimpse of american politics

couldn't be any worse than we have now !

"couldn't be any worse than we have now !"

Such attitudes gave us "The Decider".
