Originally posted by Purl Gurl: [QB] Interesting study in Population Geography. East coast Indians, the least is known because those tribes are the first to be assimilated by the (Borg) Anglo culture. Do not be confused, a lot is known about tribes along the Eastern Seaboard areas of North America, from Canada down to Florida. However, anthropologists cannot fully sort out which traditions and cultural aspects are original and which are tainted by the Anglo invasion. Moving westward towards the Mississippi River, a bit more is known because assimilation by the Anglo cultures took place a century or two later than in the Eastern Seaboard. Midwest and south, even more known, save for some tragic events. By the time Anglos arrived west of the Mississippi, America was a country with a standing army. During this time, Indians were simply slaughtered causing the loss of almost all Indian history; Trail of Tears. Plains Indians and Southwest Indians, much more is known because they were amongst the last to be slaughtered by Anglos. Up until 1900 to 1920, many Southwestern Indians, especially the Navaho, still lived traditional lifestyles. These Indians lived in remote wilderness areas and are nomadic in nature making them harder to hunt down and kill. Much is known about tribes of the Southwest. Best known are West Coast Indians, from California to Canada, because by the time Anglos arrived in the Wild West, Anglos has become a little bit more civilized and laws had been passed to protect Indian tribes. Our knowledge of tribes is a direct reflection of the westward movement of Anglos. Least amount of knowledge is in the east, the greatest amount of knowledge is in the west. This is an ironic and tragic result of expansion and genocide. Much the same happened in Central America and today's Mexico as the Spanish invaded and killed Indians in search of gold, spices and other exotic trade goods. Difference is the Spanish were successful at completely wiping out Indians in that region, thus we know so little about the Aztec, Inca and other tribes. They remain a mystery of extinction in history. Taha [/QB]
