Not sure how many folks got a census form this year but I did. Asked a ton of questions about just about everything and according to them by law I was required to fill it out.

So after much procrastination I did. Until I got to the part about what my heritage was. There were several choices and I didn't feel any were the correct choice.

So I left it blank and sent it in.

They started calling me day after day and finally caught me. What is your heritage they said? They gave me the choices and none was the correct choice in my mind.

They asked me so what is the correct choice in your mind? I said " I am an American "

I guess they wrote it in because I have not heard from them since.

I was involved in the 2000 census, it was actually fun. There are many good reasons for the census. They must be doing a few random surveys, because it's done every 10 years. It sounds like you ran into a very heavy handed census person, I saw a few of these, they usually had the door shut in their faces and could never understand why. The 2000 census they offered tempory work for 1-4 weeks and you could work around the hours of your regular job.

I filled out the census form online. Didn't see anything out of the ordinary or difficult to figure out.

The heritage question involved your ancestry and you could put numerous options in if you had grandparents who were all of different backgrounds.

there were several different forms...
the categories seemed oddly broken down to me in th eone we filled out.....
i don't recall it being very interested in the smaller details of your ethnic background unless you were asian

In the 2000 census there was a long and a short form . The long form was a pain ,took about 45 min. to fill out. The long form went to a small percentage of people and asked a lot more questions that made a lot of people uncomfortable, I think we said to leave them blank if you are not comfortable with the question. Some of the questions had a box to mark other instead of a specific answer. We always carried a badge to identify ourselves as census takers and it was well publisized before the 2000 census started. If I got a form now especially a long form, I would make sure it came from the census burea, because there is a lot of personnel information given on the long form.

The form that I got came about 3 months or so ago. I basically ignored it until I got a nasty followup letter. It went into pretty good detail about ancestry, broken down into quite a few of the various nationality backgrounds. The English section was broken down into English, Scottish, Welsh. It was broken down pretty far. You could list as many as four different backgrounds I believe along with percentage.
