Hello I want to become a stock broker my background is in computer sysytems i have a BA I researched and found that i need to find a brokerage firm. It said i need to be with this firm for at least four months to take the General Securities Registered Representative Examination. Is this correct. Can i just take a class to prepare me for the test? Then find a firm. I live in NYC any help will do.

If you live in NYC then you should have no problems finding a firm/brokerage... the brokerage gives you the classes to prepare for the test and sponsor you for the exams free of charge if im correct... look in a Sunday's newspaper for the jobs section in the classifieds.. i recommend Newsday's section but you can look in others such as NY Post, NY Daily News, NY Times, Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg News etc... my advice is to be a stockbroker for a year or two at most... make the most money you can without spending it all and get out of being a broker because it is a stressful job... use that money to become a trader in big board stocks, futures/commodities, Forex (my own personal recommendation), invest in real estate etc.... if you can't find any firms let me know and i will do a search for you...
