In the book "Wealth Without Worry" by James Whiddon, he takes the approach of owning the whole market. This makes some sense to me but according to the book, it can only be done through a financial planner which is, of course, what the author does.

Can this approach to investing be accomplished without turning over your assets to a financial planner?

Any information will appreciated.
