What exactly are they. Scottrade always says the trades i make wont be settled for another 2 or 3 business days. What affects does this have on me? can i not sell before then?

T88 If you go to WALMART and buy a pair of shoes, your settlement date is @ the cash register. If the the person who owns the shoes is in Mongolio, it may take 2 days to tell them the shoes are sold and another two days two transfer the money and another two days to receive the reply that YEP I got my money. Your Broker manages all of this in 3-5days. WHAT A DEAL VAN
