somehow this one turned up in my change dish by the door today...pretty worn, QE head, sailboat on the back---it looks like silver.....IS IT????

Absolutely. All pre-1971 (I think that is the year) Canadian dimes and quarters have mostly silver in them. I started saving them years ago, I wish I had started earlier.
Old nickels are mostly nickel, but they recently changed nickels to less expensive metals.
