Updated: 4:28 p.m. ET July 20, 2004SEATTLE - Microsoft Corp., the world’s largest software maker, said Tuesday it would begin issuing a quarterly dividend, begin a four year share buyback plan and issue a special dividend to shareholders. (MSNBC is Microsoft-NBC joint venture.)

Microsoft’s board of directors approved a 8 cent per share quarterly dividend, a plan to buy up to $30 billion of its own stock over the next four years and also approved a one-time special dividend of $3 per share, subject to shareholder approval.

The Redmond, Washington-based company, which has been under pressure from shareholders to curtail growth of its $56 billion cash hoard, said it would provide further details in a 5 p.m. conference call with co-founder Bill Gates and Chief Executive Steve Ballmer.
