Isonics Introduces Homeland Security Product that Detects and Identifies Chemical Weapons and Toxic Substances in Buildings and Mass Transit Facilities
Monday October 17, 6:00 am ET

GOLDEN, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 17, 2005--Isonics Corporation (NASDAQ:ISON - News), committed to the development of next-generation technology for the homeland security and semiconductor markets, has launched marketing and sales of a new system that monitors and identifies chemical weapons and toxic substances in airports, mass transit facilities, sports venues, and in public and private sector office buildings.

Isonics' EnviroSecure(TM) system, which is available for immediate sale and installation, is based on proven ion mobility spectroscopy (IMS) technology (a "sniffer" technology) originally developed by Isonics' minority-owned German subsidiary IUT-Berlin. Earlier generations of this product have been in continuous use at the German parliament building since 1999, effectively monitoring the air for toxic substances and chemical weapons.

"We are very excited to bring this unique detection system to market and are presently in discussions with potential buyers," said James Alexander, Chairman and CEO of Isonics Corporation. "Taking into account our country's subway systems, airports, train stations, entertainment and sports venues, government buildings as well as office buildings all over the U.S., we estimate the potential U.S. market to be in excess of $5 billion."

The Isonics system is designed to continuously monitor the air and immediately detect and identify harmful substances at the parts per billion (ppb) level, providing warning to officials of a possible attack in a matter of minutes.

"This monitoring system addresses known weaknesses in U.S. homeland security, and can provide crucial early detection of a chemical weapons attack, such as the 1995 Sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway," said Boris Rubizhevsky, President of Isonics' Homeland Security and Defense subsidiary.

Homeland defense industry experts rate chemical weapons or gas attacks as the second biggest threat next to explosives. EnviroSecure(TM) is designed to monitor public environments with high concentrations of people and identify threats quickly, allowing time to effectively employ emergency procedures.

Isonics' turnkey monitoring solution includes system design, engineering, hardware, software, installation, training and maintenance. After receipt of an order, Isonics anticipates that the EnviroSecure(TM) system could be installed and become fully operational within four to 12 months; however, the time frame will vary depending on the size and complexity of each installation. EnviroSecure(TM) hardware will be manufactured for Isonics under contract in Germany. Initially Isonics will market the EnviroSecure(TM) system solely through its existing sales organization. Due to the sizeable market opportunity, the company expects to expand its marketing and sales effort through independent sales representatives who are already marketing to the homeland security marketplace.
