The CEO Who Built Himself America’s Largest House Just Threatened to Fire His Employees if Obama’s Elected

Hamilton Nolan

David Siegel is the founder and CEO of Westgate Resorts, a huge national timeshare company and one of the largest resort developers in the world. In 2007 he was a billionaire, although he may be only a hundred-millionaire now. He and his wife Jackie were the subjects of the recent documentary "The Queen of Versailles," about their ongoing quest to build the largest house in America, a 90,000 square foot monument to excess. And yesterday, David Siegel sent an email to all of his thousands of employees, in which he—in a veiled way—insinuated that they would be fired of Barack Obama is reelected.

UPDATE: Shortly after we posted this letter, we found out, thanks to multiple readers, that it bore suspicious resemblances to a popular chain letter that was circulated just before the 2008 elections. Well, we just got off the phone with David Siegel, who told us the letter below is real, and that it was sent out to all of his employees yesterday. "I did use the letter that had circulated before as a guideline, but I changed it [to fit my circumstances]," he told us. "It speaks the truth and it gives [employees] something to think about when they go to the polls." He also said that its threats of possible layoffs are real, based on his assessment of the political and economic climate. He added that he "hasn't had any negative feedback" on the letter.

The Florida-based Westgate Resorts is not a public company. It is the domain of David Siegel, a staunch Republican. In fact, Siegel has publicly claimed credit for George W. Bush defeating Al Gore, saying "I had my managers do a survey on every employee [8,000 total]. If they liked Bush, we made them register to vote. But not if they liked Gore."

"The Queen of Versailles" depicts the dashing of Siegel's mansion dreams after the recession hit. But just months ago, he restarted construction on his personal Palace of Versailles (with the intention of selling it for $100 million) and told Reuters, "We're the most profitable we've ever been."

Huge mansion. Huge fortune. Profitable company. What could David Siegal have to complain about? Well, the demonization of the 1% by Barack Obama, for one thing. This truly amazing email went out to all Westgate employees yesterday. Bolding is ours.

From: [David Siegel]
To: [All employees]

To All My Valued Employees,

As most of you know our company, Westgate Resorts, has continued to succeed in spite of a very dismal economy. There is no question that the economy has changed for the worse and we have not seen any improvement over the past four years. In spite of all of the challenges we have faced, the good news is this: The economy doesn't currently pose a threat to your job. What does threaten your job however, is another 4 years of the same Presidential administration. Of course, as your employer, I can't tell you whom to vote for, and I certainly wouldn't interfere with your right to vote for whomever you choose. In fact, I encourage you to vote for whomever you think will serve your interests the best.

However, let me share a few facts that might help you decide what is in your best interest. The current administration and members of the press have perpetuated an environment that casts employers against employees. They want you to believe that we live in a class system where the rich get richer, the poor get poorer. They label us the "1%" and imply that we are somehow immune to the challenges that face our country. This could not be further from the truth. Sure, you may have heard about the big home that I'm building. I'm sure many people think that I live a privileged life. However, what you don't see or hear is the true story behind any success that I have achieved.

I started this company over 42 years ago. At that time, I lived in a very modest home. I converted my garage into an office so I could put forth 100% effort into building a company, which by the way, would eventually employ you. We didn't eat in fancy restaurants or take expensive vacations because every dollar I made went back into this company. I drove an old used car, and often times, I stayed home on weekends, while my friends went out drinking and partying. In fact, I was married to my business — hard work, discipline, and sacrifice. Meanwhile, many of my friends got regular jobs. They worked 40 hours a week and made a nice income, and they spent every dime they earned. They drove flashy cars and lived in expensive homes and wore fancy designer clothes. My friends refinanced their mortgages and lived a life of luxury. I, however, did not. I put my time, my money, and my life into this business —-with a vision that eventually, some day, I too, will be able to afford to buy whatever I wanted. Even to this day, every dime I earn goes back into this company. Over the past four years I have had to stop building my dream house, cut back on all of my expenses, and take my kids out of private schools simply to keep this company strong and to keep you employed.

Just think about this – most of you arrive at work in the morning and leave that afternoon and the rest of your time is yours to do as you please. But not me- there is no "off" button for me. When you leave the office, you are done and you have a weekend all to yourself. I unfortunately do not have that freedom. I eat, live, and breathe this company every minute of the day, every day of the week. There is no rest. There is no weekend. There is no happy hour. I know many of you work hard and do a great job, but I'm the one who has to sign every check, pay every expense, and make sure that this company continues to succeed. Unfortunately, what most people see is the nice house and the lavish lifestyle. What the press certainly does not want you to see, is the true story of the hard work and sacrifices I've made.

Now, the economy is falling apart and people like me who made all the right decisions and invested in themselves are being forced to bail out all the people who didn't. The people that overspent their paychecks suddenly feel entitled to the same luxuries that I earned and sacrificed 42 years of my life for. Yes, business ownership has its benefits, but the price I've paid is steep and not without wounds. Unfortunately, the costs of running a business have gotten out of control, and let me tell you why: We are being taxed to death and the government thinks we don't pay enough. We pay state taxes, federal taxes, property taxes, sales and use taxes, payroll taxes, workers compensation taxes and unemployment taxes. I even have to hire an entire department to manage all these taxes. The question I have is this: Who is really stimulating the economy? Is it the Government that wants to take money from those who have earned it and give it to those who have not, or is it people like me who built a company out of his garage and directly employs over 7000 people and hosts over 3 million people per year with a great vacation?

Obviously, our present government believes that taking my money is the right economic stimulus for this country. The fact is, if I deducted 50% of your paycheck you'd quit and you wouldn't work here. I mean, why should you? Who wants to get rewarded only 50% of their hard work? Well, that's what happens to me.

Here is what most people don't understand and the press and our Government has chosen to ignore – to stimulate the economy you need to stimulate what runs the economy. Instead of raising my taxes and depositing that money into the Washington black-hole, let me spend it on growing the company, hire more employees, and generate substantial economic growth. My employees will enjoy the wealth of that tax cut in the form of promotions and better salaries. But that is not what our current Government wants you to believe. They want you to believe that it somehow makes sense to take more from those who create wealth and give it to those who do not, and somehow our economy will improve. They don't want you to know that the "1%", as they like to label us, pay more than 31% of all the taxes in this country. Thomas Jefferson, the author of our great Constitution, once said, "democracy" will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not."

Business is at the heart of America and always has been. To restart it, you must stimulate business, not kill it. However, the power brokers in Washington believe redistributing wealth is the essential driver of the American economic engine. Nothing could be further from the truth and this is the type of change they want.

So where am I going with all this? It's quite simple. If any new taxes are levied on me, or my company, as our current President plans, I will have no choice but to reduce the size of this company. Rather than grow this company I will be forced to cut back. This means fewer jobs, less benefits and certainly less opportunity for everyone.

So, when you make your decision to vote, ask yourself, which candidate understands the economics of business ownership and who doesn't? Whose policies will endanger your job? Answer those questions and you should know who might be the one capable of protecting and saving your job. While the media wants to tell you to believe the "1 percenters" are bad, I'm telling you they are not. They create most of the jobs. If you lose your job, it won't be at the hands of the "1%"; it will be at the hands of a political hurricane that swept through this country.

You see, I can no longer support a system that penalizes the productive and gives to the unproductive. My motivation to work and to provide jobs will be destroyed, and with it, so will your opportunities. If that happens, you can find me in the Caribbean sitting on the beach, under a palm tree, retired, and with no employees to worry about.

Signed, your boss,

David Siegel

in other words "elect our guy" or we will all fire all of you bums that don't really do any work for us but get a paycheck anyway...

sounds to m like he is complaining about having to work at his job....

i smell something in the air..... and it ain't good..... it's like burning rotten eggs....

"You see, I can no longer support a system that penalizes the productive and gives to the unproductive."

By that measure? Wall Street is phucked...

When I leave your home? Your property is better off, whether through replaced siding, tighter roof, an improved deck, a really good paint job, properly glazed windows, etc.

You don't have to wonder.

If he really wants to shut his doors and live in the Carribean that's his right.

And he makes a very good point about some of the taxes that are being placed on businesses.

But he almost sounds like many of the major league owners that we have heard complain about how much they are losing over the years, then sell their clubs later on for millions upon millions or billions, think we had one recently called the LA Dodgers.

We have a free enterprise system, so shut your doors or complain to the government and maybe they will give you more cash.

But if i were one of his employees, i would make sure i voted for the guy he didn't like, but i would also make sure i had a lot of resumes out before the election.

remember when we were kids? i'm sure it's th esame today, but with differnt toys... it went like this.

the biggest jerk usually had the "best" toys... it doesn't matter if it was marbles or a baseball and bat, they were usually the jerk. you had to play with 'em if you didn't have any toys...

i think people like this that 'run things" today would be better for th eeconomy of they did take their marbles and go home..

i bleive this guys is in timeshares? he has shareholders to answer to then. i had a timeshare ONCE, never again.... i got a great deal on it, and i should have know that it was too good of a deal... two weeks beachfront on the outerbanks of NC, just about 5 miles south of kitty hawk beuatiful place last bleue week first redweek, which means you have one week of peace and quiet and one week of crwods, ideal right?...huge luxury townhome.... it could sleep 18 easily.... and that's with a few kids on the floors tho...

when i didn't want it anymore? i couldn't give it away....

Actually Glassman for me and my friends that i hung around it wasn't the case at all. I am trying to remember if there was someone i hung around like that and i don't recall one.

I never cared what someone else had, that i can remember.

We played a ton of baseball growing up and if someone didn't have a bat or ball etc. we seem to share, nobody caring where it came from as long as we could play and had enough players.

Maybe i was to stupid to not to notice or just didn't care.

Maybe as i think more i will get back to you on that thought.

Maybe that's why i would not be hessitant to tell a guy like that to shove it, even if my job depended on it. Maybe that's why i have worked so many industries in my lifetime.

i knew lots of them... i actually got raised by one, but i'll leave that alone here..

and that is why i am self-employed Iwish... i do my own thing, just like in wrestling and judo win or lose? it's all on me...

That's to bad Glassman, there are so many jerks around it's hard to stay away from them.

Maybe i was lucky growing up or very naive, either way it's okay.

But my closest buddies seem to all share, not sure any of us really thought about it, just did it and back each other when necessary.

I guess i thought that was what most friends did, but now days after listening to others maybe that isn't the case.

Koch Industries Warns 45,000 Employees Of ‘Consequences’ If They Don’t Vote For Republicans
By Rebecca Leber on Oct 15, 2012 at 11:30 am

Charles and David Koch
The Koch brothers’ $60 million pledge to defeat President Obama — along with their political network’s $400 million spending — make them two of the most influential conservatives this election.

Not content with their unprecedented influence in politics, the Kochs have also taken to influencing the votes of their employees. According to In These Times, Koch Industries sent 45,000 mailers to employees at Koch subsidiary Georgia Pacific, urging votes for Romney and other conservative candidates. The letter warns ominously of “consequences” for the workers if Republicans lose.

The Koch mailer is one of several recent examples of executives warning that employees may lose their jobs if Republicans do not win in November. Here is an excerpt of the letter:

While we are typically told before each Presidential election that it is important and historic, I believe the upcoming election will determine what kind of America future generations will inherit.

If we elect candidates who want to spend hundreds of billions in borrowed money on costly new subsidies for a few favored cronies, put unprecedented regulatory burdens on businesses, prevent or delay important new construction projects, and excessively hinder free trade, then many of our more than 50,000 U.S. employees and contractors may suffer the consequences, including higher gasoline prices, runaway inflation, and other ills.

So what is the difference between that, and SEIU members being forced to picket against Republicans, and if they dont show up they get fined?

Another CEO Threatens To Fire Employees If Obama Wins

By Pat Garofalo on Oct 14, 2012 at 12:45 pm

Arthur Allen, CEO of ASG Software Solutions
Last week, billionaire CEO David Siegel, who runs a timeshare empire, threatened to fire employees if President Obama is reelected in November, saying in an email, “the economy doesn’t currently pose a threat to your job. What does threaten your job however, is another 4 years of the same Presidential administration.”

And Siegel is not alone in pushing his employees to cast their vote a certain way. MSNBC’s Chris Hayes reported today on another CEO — Arthur Allen of ASG Software Solutions — who said in an email to his employees that they’d only have themselves to blame if they lose their jobs if Obama wins. The email reads, in part:

Many of you have been with ASG for over 5, 10, 15, and even 20 years. As you know, together, we have been able to keep ASG an independent company while still growing our revenues and customers. But I can tell you, if the US re-elects President Obama, our chances of staying independent are slim to none. I am already heavily involved in considering options that make our independence go away, and with that all of our lives would change forever. I believe that a new President and administration would give US citizens and the world the renewed confidence and optimism we all need to get the global economies started again, and give ASG a chance to stay independent. If we fail as a nation to make the right choice on November 6th, and we lose our independence as a company, I don’t want to hear any complaints regarding the fallout that will most likely come. [...]

I am asking you to give us one more chance to stay independent by voting in a new President and administration on November 6th. Even then, we still might not be able to remain independent, but it will at least give us a chance. If we don’t, that chance goes away

In These Times also reported today that a company owned by billionaire right-wing activists David and Charles Koch sent pro-Romney mailers to its employees. The mailer gives a veiled warning that, if Obama is reelected, “then many of our more than 50,000 U.S. employees and contractors may suffer the consequences, including higher gasoline prices, runaway inflation, and other ills.”

Thats pretty much what parties say everyday of the week.

If you are an employee you have to think of your options.

If he believes this, he has every right to state it, i am sure many of his employees talk about this all the time.

If he built this company and feels concerns(how can't he) then he's hoping that a change might help, whether it does or doesn't.

This goes on at many businesses and labor unions, its called politics and even goes on this board, kinda old news especially at election time.

Gotta break ranks, here, Iwish.

The way this all went down smacks of thuggery and intimidation to me.

Let me put it this way: I'm hardly ever intimidated. I'll call the White House, the SEC, whatever...

but most people don't...

Most peeps? When they hear the boss, the owner, tell chit like this? Ya, they're intimidated...

Posted by IWISHIHAD on :

I am sure many are intimidated, but it is his business and he might or might not believe what he is saying.

You and me would most likely would not put up with this, at least the way these articles read.

As an employee though, i am not sure you have many choices, especially if the employers are willing to shut down or risk posssible union organizing, if they are a non union company.

These are the reasons unions gain strength.

The other option for an employee is to quit.

Like i had said in my earlier statement, i would be getting my resumes out prior to the election and prior to my visit to the chairmans office, just in case.

that's what i like about you iwish. i know i come across as know it all but i feel the same way. when my buddy pagan ribs me about cutting and pasting? it's cuz i do go look for data to make my decisions but i know where i want to look at least... it's not random wanderings and musings.

i have to agree with Tex in the sense that many people i know are very intimadated by power and even more simply follow power blindly.

i cannot even begin to tell you in twenty pages some of the crap my wife has been put thru by her male bosses because she and i and you think similarly in the sense that we are going to do what WE think is right come hell or high water.

there really is a stark choice here. the large number peopel that bailed on Obama when he didn't *****slap Romney on the first debate is actually an indicator of how much people feel like they want soemone to"take charge" and tell them waht to do and that everything is going to be OK.. cuz thatis the only thing Romney si running on-

"i'll do better"- "I'm your daddy" that is all Romney has offered. if Romeny gets elected adn follows thru on his campaign promises like namimg China a currency manipulator? we'll be in Depresion with 30 months- sooner if he fires enough ofthe Federal workforce to balance the budget adn cut his taxes.

make no mistake what Romeny has NOT siad in thse debates is how he'll cut taxes adn balance the budget.. he plans on firing as many as 1 million people....

GOP Rep. Tells Employers To Intimidate Their Workers Into Voting For Romney

By Pat Garofalo on Oct 18, 2012 at 8:08 pm

Rep. Joe Walsh (R-IL)
Recently, several CEOs have issued missives to their workers saying that, if President Obama wins reelection, their jobs might be in danger. One CEO wrote in an email, “The economy doesn’t currently pose a threat to your job. What does threaten your job however, is another 4 years of the same Presidential administration.” Another wrote, “If we fail as a nation to make the right choice on November 6th, and we lose our independence as a company, I don’t want to hear any complaints regarding the fallout that will most likely come…I am asking you to give us one more chance to stay independent by voting in a new President.”

In audio uncovered by In These Times’ Mike Elk, Mitt Romney himself got in on the action, telling a group of business owners, “I hope you make it very clear to your employees what you believe is in the best interest of your enterprise and therefore their job and their future in the upcoming elections.”

And now House Republicans are joining in. In video released by the Chicago Sun-Times, filmed by the CREDO SuperPac, Rep. Joe Walsh (R-IL) instructed business owners to threaten employees with the loss of their jobs or their health insurance if Obama wins:

Spread the word! If you run, own or manage a company, tell your employees! What was the CEO this week that said, if Obama is reelected, I may have to let all of you go next year? If Obama’s reelected, if the Democrats take Congress, I may not be able to cover your health insurance next year. If there’s ever a year where people who run, manage, or own their companies are going to energize their employees, it better be this year. We’re up against it.

Walsh is perhaps best known for his incendiary and over-the-top rhetoric. He screamed at constituents attempting to ask about the role of bank lobbyists in Washington, claimed that Muslims are “trying to kill Americans every week,” and said that his military veteran opponent is not a true hero. The big differance for me now Glassman than when i was younger, is that i pick my fights better.

If you fight with every jerk out there, there would be no time to do anything else, which i am sure you know.

The big question is, would you do most of the things the same way if you could go back in time, i can honesty say yes, even though it might have cost me one way or the other.

"As an employee though, i am not sure you have many choices, especially if the employers are willing to shut down or risk posssible union organizing, if they are a non union company."

That's *exactly* my point.

Posted by IWISHIHAD on :

The reality is that there are not many businesses these days that care about an employee and could care less what they say.

So you can leave one company and go to another company that is just as bad or worse.

I guess the good thing for the younger generation is they don't know any different.

The bad thing is there was a time when there were a lot more companies that cared and a time when companies and employees grew together or failed together.

Unfortunately some employees take the bad attitude home and feel that if they have to put up with it at work, that everyone else in society should put up with it also.

The times are constantly changing and not for the good in some cases.

But as an employee you can quit, try to organize a union, file a suit(good luck) or tell them their wrong for what there telling you and most likely get fired.

The employer might feel he completely right and and the employee is completly wrong, guess who wins in most cases.

I have no doubt what you would do, i have no doubt what glassman would do and i know exactly what i would do.

Some of us have to be sacrificed for the better, spending half our time getting nowhere in many cases like these. [Wink]

But employees have bills to pay and many have families and are living day to day.

So even though the employer may be intimidating and thugs, most are stuck with them and i am not sure the employee is wrong for putting up with it, under the circumstances.

I don't like it for many reasons, one being that it doesn't stay at work.

And again an employer might really think he is being had by a particular administration and feel very frustrated by not having any control over it.

I really doubt that in most cases, but can be possible. Doesn't make it right by the employer, anymore than employees that are frustrated from their work and taking out on others, but it seems to be the way it goes in a lot of cases.

CEO Asks Employees To Help Company ‘And Yourself’ By Donating $2,500 To Romney

By Igor Volsky posted from ThinkProgress Economy on Oct 20, 2012 at 5:10 pm

Arthur Allen, CEO of ASG Software Solutions
A growing number of CEOs are pressuring their employees to vote for Mitt Romney, whose tax cut plan could offer millionaires an $87,000 tax break. Now, MSNBC’s Up with Chris Hayes, has uncovered at least one executive who called on his employees to donate up to $2,500 to the GOP presidential candidate’s campaign.

The show reported last week that Arthur Allen of ASG Software Solutions emailed his employees that they’d only have themselves to blame if they lose their jobs after Obama wins. But Allen sent another email on the eve of the Republican convention soliciting donations for the former Massachusetts governor:

To all ASG domestic employees,

This coming Monday, Mitt Romney will be officially nominated as the Republican Presidential candidate. I am encouraging everyone to go to the Romney for President web site and contribute as much as you can to his campaign for President, up to the maximum of $2500.00 per person. I am also encouraging you to contact all of your friends and relatives and ask them to support Romney and to go to the polls and vote on election day.

ASG, like many companies, is still struggling, even after 4 years. You probably heard that we tripped a bank leverage covenant on June 30th, and now must go through yet another round of unfavorable treatment by our lenders. Many of our domestic employees are still on the 4 day work week. Many of our customers are waiting until they see the results of the election before beginning to invest again. We need to elect a fiscally conservative President and Vice-President and stop this ridiculous government spending. I believe that Romney and Ryan can put us back on the path to sanity, but even then it is not going to be painless for our country and ASG.

Please help ASG and yourself by contributing to the Romney/Ryan campaign.

Mr. Allen

Romney had called on employers to “make it very clear” how they feel about the candidates. During a call with the National Federation of Independent Businesses (NFIB) first discovered by In These Times, Romney told business owners to “pass… along to your employees” how their jobs might be affected by who wins in November.

After heeding Romney’s advise Allen sent another email asking employees to defer “some or all” of their salary “until December, in order to help the company make a $15 million interest payment.”

CEO Threatens Employees With ‘Personal Consequences’ If Romney Loses

By Adam Peck on Oct 25, 2012 at 1:35 pm

The list of corporate CEOs and owners who have tried scaring their employees into voting for Mitt Romney got a bit longer this week thanks to Milwaukee businessman Mike White.

White, the owner of the industrial equipment firm Rite-Hite, sent his 1,400 employees an email this week warning them that they needed to “understand the personal consequences to them of having our tax rates increase dramatically if President Obama is re-elected,” according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, which was sent a copy of the correspondence. The email goes on to warn that Rite-Hite would consider dropping its contribution to the workers’ retirement plan, blaming tax hikes that White says are on the way if Obama wins a second term, and that workers will lose their health care:

“The tax rate we pay is not 17%, as Warren Buffett would have you believe; with state taxes it is roughly 45%. President Obama has announced that our planned tax rate would increase to roughly 65%, reducing our after tax income by 36% and dramatically reducing, if not eliminating, your and my RSP contributions.”

As a result, White said the company’s profits would not be reinvested. Instead, he wrote, “the money will be sent into the abyss that is Washington, D.C. So, on top of the burden of having your personal taxes increase dramatically, which they will, your RSP contributions and healthy retirement are also at risk, all for the sake of maintaining an over-sized government that borrows 42% of every dollar it spends.”

White also wrote that Obama’s re-election means there is a “good chance of losing Rite-Hite insurance and being put into Obamacare.”

White is no stranger to Republican politics. He was the single largest individual donor to Gov. Scott Walker’s (R-WI) 2010 election, and in fact was named in a lawsuit for exceeding the state’s $10,000 cap on campaign contributions.

In the last few weeks, several CEOs — themselves all multi-millionaires — warned employees that if Obama wins the election in two weeks, their jobs could hang in the balance. Rite-Hite employees were taken aback by the message, telling the Journal Sentinel they felt threatened by the email.

It’s unclear whether White’s email was in response to Mitt Romney’s plea for business owners to pressure their employees to vote for him. In a June conference call, Romney told CEOs, “I hope you make it very clear to your employees what you believe is in the best interest of your enterprise.

Still more millionaire CEOs are urging their employees to vote for Mitt Romney. The Huffington Post reports that Jack DeWitt, CEO of Request Foods in Holland, Michigan, penned a letter for the company’s monthly employee newsletter in which he urged his workers to vote for Mitt Romney and Republican Senate Candidate Pete Hoekstra and called President Obama’s first term “a complete failure.” What DeWitt failed to mention is that he and his company were the beneficiaries of a $5.5 million grant from the Obama administration as part of the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. DeWitt is a long-time contributor to Republican candidates and conservative groups like the homophobic outfit the Family Research Council.

Why are these larger employers being so vocal about the Obama administration?

Is this normal before an election?

Or is there a major concern that this administration has brought through its policies that really concerns business?

If the largest employers were confident about Obama making the right choices then they wouldnt be acting like this. Obviously there are some serious issues going on.

Well, I do not blame them for wanting to keep more of what they earn. Especially when what is taken from them is spent so irresponsibly. Like I say before, you have way to much faith in big government to spend your money properly.

He is suppose to be the head part of that Gov. that's what the president is.

How can you separate him or any other President from the US government?

Again is this type of article typical before an election? rule out G Bush administration, there in a league of their own.

I am not against business in any way, big or small.

I am against big businesses that are out of control.

These employers have every right to their opinions and maybe their opinions have a lot of validity, i would have to see a lot more to decide if i agree or disagree with their opinion.

What i don't agree with is an employer who is nothing but a big bully.

Their employees have every right to their opinions and the right to vote for whomever they want without a dictator telling them how to vote, this is what we have fought for throughout are history!

Applebee’s CEO Threatens To Fire Employees And Freeze Hiring Because Of Obamacare

By Annie-Rose Strasser on Nov 9, 2012 at 3:00 pm

Zane Tankel, the CEO of Applebee’s New York Franchise, Apple-Metro, is so dedicated to not spending money on his employees that he’s refusing to hire anyone new. Why? Because he might have to provide them health care.

Under the Affordable Care Act, a business of 50 people or more must provide a health care option for its employees by 2014. The 40 Applebee’s restaurants in New York employ hundreds of people, and Tankel believes providing them with health insurance plans will be too costly. In an appearance on Fox Business News, the CEO said he won’t be able to hire new people because of the law, and even floated the idea of layoffs:

TANKEL: We’ve calculated it will be some millions of dollars across our system. So what does that say — that says we won’t build more restaurants. We won’t hire more people — exactly the opposite of what the President says.

HOST: Do you feel under pressure to move to a more part-time workforce, as other restaurants are doing because of Obamacare?

TANKEL: The model’s been set. I’m sure all our people are watching this right now, so I don’t want to make any commitments one way or another. I just want to say we’re looking at it, we’re evaluating it, if it’s possible to do without cutting people back, I’m delighted to do it. But that also rolls back expansion, it rolls back hiring more people, and in a best-case scenario we only shrink the labor force minimally.

Watch it:

It is virtually impossible that a company the size of Applebee’s will be able to avoid providing health care in the long-term — and it’s not really in their interest, either. Studies have shown that a company that provides health care has a higher retention rate for its employees, reports more employee satisfaction, and draws the best employees to the job.

And although providing his employees with affordable health insurance doesn’t seem to be a priority for Tankel, they likely have no other options when it comes to accessing health care. Many low-wage workers in the restaurant industry often don’t qualify for Medicaid because they earn salaries that are just barely over the threshold, but they also don’t make enough to be able to afford insurance on the private market.

Starbucks has had employee health plans all alng, they seem to be growing constantly.. somehow they seem to be able to pay tehir people and make moeny... must be some criminal behaviour involved..

basically denny's now admits they haven't been taking care of their employees?

and walmart too... Walmart had the most employees on govt healthcare assitnce of any company...

admit ti cash, you can avoid paying one day, you can even put if off for years, but one day the bill comes due no matter how hard you try to avoid it...

my bet is that denny's loses alot of business over this...

Looks like there are major companies shifting their workforce over the border to Canada, seems to be picking up for their future operations.

We don't need to lose more jobs out of this country, tough major calls coming.

you mean they are moving to Canada wher the Govt mandates all health care? what a shock!

odd how the burden of health care is dostroying our profitability in this country, the Govt ought to do soemthing about it huh? [Wink]

Posted by IWISHIHAD on :

Exactly, but i am not sure why.

It must be cheaper or they have a way of avoiding the costs and still get benefits, but bottom line were seeing more jobs leaving and we better start fixing our system to keep jobs here.
