Checkmate on Middle Class Taxes
By ThinkProgress War Room on Jul 25, 2012 at 6:04 pm

Will the GOP Set Middle Class Taxes Free?
In an effort to avoid being blamed for holding middle class tax cuts hostage, Senate Republicans today caved and allowed the rarest of rarities: an actual up-or-down, majority vote on a bill. They gambled that Democrats didn’t have the votes to pass their plan — and they lost.

The Republican plan, which gives the wealthiest 2 percent another handout they don’t need and we cannot afford while raising taxes on more than 25 MILLION middle and working class families, failed to attract even 50 votes. It went down 45 votes to 54, with even Republican Sens. Scott Brown (MA) and Susan Collins (ME) voting no.

By contrast, the Democratic plan, which preserves and even enhances tax cuts for 98 percent of Americans, passed on a vote of 51 to 48. Zero Republicans voted to support this plan, while all but two are now on the record in favor of billions of dollars in tax hikes on the middle class.

Now that the Senate has acted, it couldn’t be clearer who is to blame if middle class taxes go up in January: Republicans — and Republicans alone. House Republicans are now literally the only thing standing in the way of tax cuts for 98 percent of Americans.

IN ONE SENTENCE: It’s time for House Republicans to stop holding middle class tax cuts hostage and immediately pass a bill extending them — and them alone.

it's time to pay the bills ray. middle class too, i don't like it- i don't wanna, but the the bills must be paid

if Obama breaks in his claims, and allows tax cuts for all again, we are going to be in even worse shape in two more years.

Obama is going to have to risk his legacy on this... i beleive he has already drawn the line in the sand.

when it was time to write the checks? everybody in this country signed.... now the bill is due.

Of course it is time to pay the bills. The fight is over whats going to be cut and by the way I don't mind paying more taxes. As long as these insane tax laws are made to where everybody pays more taxes loop holes are closed. And certain things are left alone .Education, social security, farm subs, medicare, and Obama care. Plus a lot more. Even if we take our military and have to drop it back to defend the country only status. After all that is what our founding fathers said it was to be used for, defence only. But, one thing for sure the top 2 percent are not going to get a break at the exspence of everybody eles. All they have been doing with there tax cut is hording cash they are not the big job makers they claim to be.

farm subs need to be restructured in my opinion so they favor smaller producers otherwise I agree with Ray.

don't get me started on the farm bill... i am surrounded by the plunder these effers get off it...

it's not all waste just half [Wink]

Members of the Senate, which passed its version of the farm bill in May, have been waiting on the House to vote on the bill, and they say they are opposed to extending the current farm bill. Senators said an extension would delay the changes they approved in cutting farm subsidies and food stamps and improving crop insurance. Both the House and the Senate farm bills eliminate the $5 billion-a-year subsidies paid to cotton, grain and soybean growers whether they plant crops or not.

House leaders have delayed the farm bill in hopes of averting a fight between Republicans over a proposal for steep cuts in food stamps and over the potential cost of the bill, which totals $996 billion over the next 10 years. The House bill would cut $16.5 billion from the food stamp program. The Senate bill would cut $4.5 billion.

closing foreign investment and corporate tax loopholes has consistently been within his tax reform plan.
