Newt Gingrich Compares His Failure To Make The Virginia Ballot To The Pearl Harbor Attack

By Faiz Shakir on Dec 25, 2011 at 2:45 am

Yesterday, the Republican Party of Virginia announced on Twitter that “Newt Gingrich did not submit required 10k signatures and has not qualified for the VA primary.” Reeling from their own ineptness, the Gingrich campaign quickly announced that it would “pursue an aggressive write-in campaign.” But as we noted yesterday, Virginia laws prohibit such a write-in campaign.

The New York Times assessed that Gingrich’s failure could “shake the confidence of voters.” The National Review called both Gingrich and Rick Perry “idiotic.” On Fox, Karl Rove said flatly, “This is a problem — if you’re the front runner and you can’t organize your campaign so you can meet those filing deadlines. It’s elemental. It’s the fundamental thing you do.”

By late last night, the Gingrich campaign was trying desperately reassure the public that it could recover. Campaign director Michael Krull went on Facebook to convey that Newt told him “this is not catastrophic — we will continue to learn and grow.” Then, in the very next paragraph, Krull employed a “catastrophic” metaphor to suggest the campaign is now recovering from a calamity:

Newt and I agreed that the analogy is December 1941: We have experienced an unexpected set-back, but we will re-group and re-focus with increased determination, commitment and positive action. Throughout the next months there will be ups and downs; there will be successes and failures; there will be easy victories and difficult days – but in the end we will stand victorious.

Gingrich, who fashions himself as an historian, frequently employs Peal Harbor analogies and anecdotes. In fact, he has co-authored an historical fiction book about Pearl Harbor, which literary critics blasted for its shoddy quality.

this is why Obama even with a mediocre presidency has a serious chance to win a second term.

Thats the problem with him going around and trying to do this. Who picks these people? I really do not think Republican voters a year ago were thinking...hey....you know that newt.... hes a great guy, and we want him to be the front-runner for the GOP race to 2012 against Obama.

No, everyone was talking about Chris Christie, who may pull a move I like and join Romney. Romney-Christie would beat Obama, I know it would. As you all know definitely NOT because of Romney, but because Christie.

Christie seems to be too polarising on the National level. I don't think moderates will vote for him. They would vote Romney first. Christie would pull in the right wingers.

The thing is? I think Christie would generate more votes FOR Obama than he would for Romney

I hate to say what people in general would say about Christie I think he has a lot sins that he is covering up. Then there just is the fact of the way he looks and his short fuse. Add that with Romney. What have you got the mutt and jeff from hell.

If this blow up had happened two months ago Gingrich would likely have lost all credibility.

So close to the first caucus he may be able to ride it out and let other news overwhelm his misstep if he performs well in Iowa and New Hampshire. In other words he may have peaked at the right time.

Tell you what though...if he becomes the republican candidate without being on the ballot for the Virginia Primary...the republicans give a state that they otherwise thought the could turn Red back to Obama.

Gingrich is slipping now in the polls. HAve you all noticed how one by one they surge then drop? Romney has been holding a steady position for a while.

Romney-Christie

Obama-Clinton

Let the battle begin!

sheesh, i just watched Newt call Romney a liar and then say that he would rather have Romney (even tho he's a liar) than Obama.

is this what partisanship has led US to?
