whachoo doin' down there anyway? bidding on earthquake repairs?

getting sworn in as an earthquake hits is bound to create some "turmoil", even for a right-winger like Pinera.

Many homeless people, it is fall/winter now here so at night can get in the thirties, many people are worried about the # of people that will die at night. It is very chaotic and a lot of garbage everywhere. People are busy trying to put the infrastructure back together, not as much damage as I expected honestly, but still enough.
I am doing something with the army of Chile. I have been here since last Sun/Mon ond I am done with my training so now I leave tommorow. It has been interesting, I dont't speak much spanish and very few Chilean's speak english but I have made do. I can not wait to get back to the States and to see my family.

the president that left office when the earhtquake hit was a left-winger with 80% aproval ratings, she was banned by law from running again until someone else holds the office, or she most likely would have won another term...

Bachelet, Chile's first woman president, was banned by law from standing for re-election until someone else has had a term; she maintains an approval rating of 81%, and is expected to stand in 2014.

Piñera is seen as a moderate rightwinger, closer on the spectrum to New York mayor Michael Bloomberg than Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi. As leader of the party Renovación Nacional, he was among the first rightwing politicians to openly break with the Pinochet dictatorship.

that dictatorship ended in 1990

A recent Piñera TV advert included positive mention of gay couples, which ignited huge protests from his coalition partner, the far right UDI, Chile's most powerful single political party.

the new guy is a right winger who was literally sworn in as the earhtquakes hit, of course people are going to be frustrated ...
