Query:

Should Congress legislate to make it a crime to destroy these potential lives?

Why do these people want to play God? Seriously...now we have genetic makeup artists where you can go and pick out if you want a blond hair blue eye baby. This is getting out of control.

Along with being horribly biased and a bigot, you are also hopelessly confused.

Selecting hair and eye color? How? Exactly from where or whom are you cut and pasting that drivel?

What's out of control is you posting absurd bull.

Drivel? See, this is what I am talking about. Something you do not like or agree with and you dismiss it as lies. Go write this news agency and tell them they are full of drivel since apparently you dont like it then thats all it is.

Get over yourself bdgee. These people are trying to play God and it isnt smart. Because you dont believe in God doesnt mean it is ok to act like him.

Custom-made babies delivered: Fertility clinic doctor's design-a-kid offer creates uproar

A fertility clinic's promise to deliver the ultimate in designer babies - letting parents choose eye, hair and even skin color - is sparking a worldwide uproar.

Dr. Jeff Steinberg has already let thousands decide their kids' gender. Now he says that within the next six months, the Manhattan and L.A. offices of his Fertility Institutes will let would-be moms and dads pick whether junior has blue or brown eyes or black or blond hair.

"In the process of doing gender selection ... we've also uncovered the technology [to] characterize things like eye and hair color," said Steinberg, 54.

The idea of a Build-A-Bear style baby was slammed Monday by bioethicists and right-to-life groups - and Pope Benedict has warned against it for years.

The Pope railed against the "obsessive search for the perfect child" just two weekends ago. "A new mentality is creeping in that tends to justify a different consideration of life and personal dignity," he said.

Steinberg countered that reproductive technologies aren't about to go away.

"Genetic health is the wave of the future," he said. "It's already happening and it's not going to go away. It's going to expand. So if they've got major problems with it, they need to sit down and really examine their own consciences because there's nothing that's going to stop it."

Custom-made kids will be achieved through preimplantation genetic diagnosis, or PGD, the procedure used to weed out problem embryos and to allow parents to choose a gender.

In letting parents decide what traits their kids have, doctors will examine the genetic makeup of embryos created in the lab and implant the ones that have the best chance of giving mom and dad what they want.

Some doctors question Steinberg's ability to give parents their pick of traits.

"He's the only one offering this because you can't yet do it," said Sean Tipton of the American Society for Reproductive Technology. "Nobody can do this right now."

Dr. William Kearns, head of the Shady Grove Center for Preimplantation Genetics in Rockville, Md., says some known genetic markers do correlate with a probability of hair, eye and skin color, but he’s against using the data for non-medical reasons.

"Our goal in offering (embryo screening) to couples at risk is to increase the likelihood that they can achieve their dream of having a healthy baby, free from a catastrophic genetic disease," he said. "I won't use the data for non-medical trait selection."

Steinberg, one of the doctors who helped produce the first test-tube baby, admits the technology isn't 100% - and says for now the best results are with couples of Scandinavian heritage, whose gene pools are the least diluted.

"Say you made seven embryos, and one of them has got the highest chance of green eyes, and that chance is 80%. It's not perfect science because eye and hair color are not perfect genetics," said Steinberg, who opened an office on E. 40th St. two months ago.

There are no laws in New York that address how PGD testing can be used. Opponents say there should be.

Lori Kehoe, executive director of the New York State Right to Life Committee, is upset that the embryos deemed undesirable will be destroyed.

She said it is "sickening to flush a member of the human family down the drain" because they are not considered perfect.

Prof. Alexander Capron, bioethicist and professor of law and medicine at the University of Southern California, called Steinberg's procedure problematic. "The notion of unconditional love and support - which is assumed to be what parents owe their children - is totally undermined here," he said.

"You're saying I want to order up just what I want and that's what I'll love."

One New York doctor even likened it to the pursuit of a master race.

"We're crossing the line into eugenics, the theory of trying to give people enhanced characteristics - genetic engineering to make sort of the superman or superwoman," said Dr. Daniel Sulmasy, director of ethics at New York Medical College and St. Vincent's Hospital.

It's been front or second page news for years now.. How beege can claim it doesn't exist is just amazing.
Beege, you were more fun when you were still migrating towards insanity.

Posted by bdgee on :

It's horse crap, unless you are talking about the same variety of system that comes via cattle or pig breading. And then it would take careful selection and the willingness of the breeding stock, along with possibly several generations of effort. (Yeah, the Nazis tried it and devoted huge efforts, but so what? That stuff is as old as selective breeding of livestock.)

Rel, you are as big an intellectual patsy as cow.

Exactly which gene or genes control eye and hair color and exactly where and for whom was it done?

It's a pie in the sky bunch of fiction and nonsense to lure fools and excite religious fanatics.

That's not news you have been reading on the front and second page, rel. That's gossip at best. But it fits in well for those prone to believe every conspiracy theory that some wild eyed and fantastic imagination can concoct in order to excuse away reality. There was one months back on the front and second pages of newspapers across the country proving that Jessica Simpson had hexed the Cowboys by sleeping with Romo. Nothing surprising, seeing that any chick that looks like that must be a witch.

I know it isn't possible now beege.. I am far from the religious wacko you seem to label everyone as.
I for one am not against it.. Just noted that it has been discussed as a very real probability for quite some time.

Point to the the answer to any question I ask that cow answered or tried to. What he did was post a bunch of trash ideas evangelical religion of hate and bigotry.

I asked if Congress should pass legislation to prevent actual research that exists and didn't so much as suggest there was any need or desire to speculate on some fictitious junk science. All cow spoke to is bigotry and prejudice on imagined nonsense.

You need to get your stories at least close to the facts before you choose to insult people with your hate and bias. Your attacks on false bases is what is getting old, my friend.

We have too many laws already.
We only need one more:
Congress should legislate that from now on there will be no new laws and the number of laws on the books should be cut by 50%.

Nope, I never said such a thing, period. It is you making the absurd accusations.

It may have been discussed, but then, so has travel at greater than the speed of light and the elimination of cancer and perpetual motion.

Moreover, whether or not there is some wild eyed dreamer out there who believes that it is his future Nobel Prize to be and his patent on the process will make him the world's richest person is not a matter I have any intent to further or hinder or even think about, I leave conspiracies and their implications entirely to you, as you are a confirmed expert on any of them, or so you always claim.

I agree 100% Cow....Im a Christian...but don't worry!!!

The Lord is comming soon..way befoe things "get out of control" as you put it!

In the book of MATTHEW...the last sign before the lord comes is that the GOSPEL has to reach every corner of the earth...even the places where people don't even know exist.

Well now we have the internet, cell phones, and litte 9 year old grave robbers running around ancient ruins where their tribes live...text messaging each other back and forth....no money, food, ect...but they can text message lol..... [Big Grin]

Not to mention satalite TV, NASA trying to contact other planets.....

What Im trying to say the last sign of the word reaching every corner of the world is being fullfilled right now....even though the Devil created the information age to spread porn, prostitution on craigs list, ect.....the lord once again took the devils scheme and turned it into a vehicle to fullfuil his will! in birds?

the females have been selecting how the males will look and behave for millenia...

God gave them the choice. they use it and this is what you get:
 -

the females tend to be less stunning:

 -

if a bird has a less than perfect offspring? they kick it right outa the nest.

all the breeds of dogs? WE selected them

all the domesticated animals?

we selected them..

picking your kids hair color? that;s going to happen and lots more...

the wealthy will do it first... then everybody will, and the world will probably be much better for it..
nobody will look this nashty anymore;

 -

God gave us this ability. how we use it is the test. not using it is a waste of ability.

'lo, NR, how goes the research on the GSL?

Posted by NaturalResources on :

Pretty good despite a major setback.... My desktop computer took a dump on me two weeks ago, and set me back for a while because all my research was on that computer, but fortunately it was a software issue rather than a hardware issue, and after a few headaches, I was overjoyed to discover all my data on the HD still intact. It could have been really ugly cause I hadn't made any backups of my work...

I've made a few major breakthroughs and I'm planing on posting an update at some point tonight.

My desktop computer took a dump on me two weeks ago,

i got a virus called anti-spyware 2009... took me a couple of hours to clean it out properly, then i had to go back to an old reset point anyway...

i think i got it from youtube...

Posted by NaturalResources on :

I dunno if it was a virus or not Glass. I was using youtube last week and I read an article the other day about a "worm virus" going around there but I dunno if that is what it was or not. When I would turn on my computer, it would tell me "explorer.exe" failed and then crash. I rescued all my important data off the harddrive and just wiped it and then re-installed windows, which I desperately needed to do anyway...

I wish I could reinstall windows. However, all of the computers I now have running were loaded with Windows XP by Dell, who included no Windows XP disk to allow reloading the system.

BAAAAA on Dell and on Microsoft.

I run AVG Free antivirus, which in addition to being FREE is also automatically kept up to date and automatically cleans out any crap thjat so much as looks like a virus that some evil-doer might have hacked into my machine. I like it better than any other I have tried and I have tried most of them. Additionally I have Microsoft's "Windows Defender", which also runs automatically and Eusing Free Registry Cleaner (each free to download) that I run maybe once a week. Those latter two clean out all sorts of stuff that has come into my machine under guise of some other purpose and may or may not actually do damage, but also those that may be adding me to spammers list and such.

i use anti-spy ware too.

this one is really screwball.

it installs on your toolbar all by itself and begins telling you that you are beng attacked. and you need to buy their chit to get rid of the problems..

it's not particularly difficult to remove, but i either made an error on one of the processes i stopped, or it tries to stop you from removing it... in any case, it installs itself into severl places at once..
the warnings appear to me to be written by chinese speaking person who can read and write English but doesn't speak it. i know this from all of the chinese advertising sites i have read.

I think you can reinstall windows with system restore. Just save all your harddrive, it puts it into a separate folder. Then after you restore you go back in and get the stuff you want.

Posted by bdgee on :

Thanks. lock, that's good information.

But one of my machines has lost the ability for system restore. I have no idea how or when that happened. A couple of other things seem to have died too, like Windows Update. Thus, I'd like to be able to reinstall from a disk as I used to with older Windows varieties.

Posted by Lockman on :

Ya I have a Dell and feel the same way about not having a disk to reinstall. On top of that any problems have to be solved thru Dell not directly with microsoft.

It was due to a similarly acting evil that I originally downloaded and installed Windows Defender. It is on the Microsoft site and is free. If you are still having that thing reappear after you think you have deleted, erased, and cleaned, which is what it did to me, check into the Windows Defender.

I didn't get a disk with my Dell either. I didn't need one for about 3 years, and then ironically about a month after the warranty expired the OS died, and I needed to re-install. I called Dell and they told me there was nothing they could do because my warranty was expired. They seemed more interested in asking me what was wrong with my computer so they could try to sell me their repair services, but I told them I knew exactly what was wrong with the computer and just needed to restore Windows. After about 20 minutes of my insistence that they send me a FREE copy because I never received one with the computer, they finally gave in and sent me a restore disk. It wasn't true copy of Windows, and reinstalled all the "bloatware" that comes with a new Dell, but it got the job done.

Also, (and I wish I knew this before I used the restore disk), you can use ANY copy of the version of windows that came on your Dell to install a fresh OS without all the Dell "bloatware", just make sure you use the product key for Windows that came with your Dell instead of the one provided on the disk you are using... Hope this helps.

NR.

P.S. Sorry for taking this thread off-topic.

From what I understand, "imaging" your drive is the easiest way to restore your computer to "scratch" if you run into problems major problems and have to "wipe" your hard drive, assuming your hardware is EXACTLY the same as when you "imaged" the drive. My better half is the expert in that field though, so any detailed questions on that and I will have to yield to her... LOL

if you look in your control panel? you should have a sytem recovery icon, that will allow you to make a system restore disc among other things.....

mine is called the VAIO reovery wizard. the best thing about it is that it has a feature that allows you to go to a list of image capture times and resart your computer to the exact specs it had on that day... i automatically create system "image" every other day..

say you got a virus today? after you wipe it out? you can go back to the last scheduled "copy" of your sytem and restart it... you may even be able to just go back to the last date and restart without cleaning the virus out, but i never tried that.

if you press F1 (on my 'puter it's F1 it may be another (Fx) ) for others) when you start your computer? you should go to a black screeen (BIOS) instead of the windows startup screen. that will give you the option of going to safe mode and should even allow you to restart the 'puter to the last captured setting that worked...

Just make sure you keep all your install files... back up all your misc files and reinstall the OS from scratch.
It is the fastest your computer will be.
Don't have the disk?
Any OS can be downloaded and installed.
I have a stack of OS' probably a hundred disks high.
Currently on Win 7 64 bit, build 7000 after a love afair with linux for a few months.
Don't fall in love with you OS or you'll end up making excuses for why it's so slow.
