Is there a way we can but a curb on some of these personal attacks on the OT boards? There are a lot of good and interesting threads on here. But with the constant bashing of each other amongst posters, it severely takes away from the content of these OT threads. I, and I'm sure many others, enjoy these OT threads, but the constant attacks upon one another takes alot of the enjoyment away.

I mean you click on an updated thread that interests you thinking there might be some new insight, and all you get is one poster badmouthing another poster. It's getting ridiculous here lately with the attacks. I have fired off a few attacks of my own over my 3 1/2 years here as well. But lately, there are incessant personal battles between several posters that are dominating the OT threads.

Something should be done IMHO.

Thanks for listening.

Ace,

That's what I'm talking about. Your first response was to attack me for my suggestion that was not directed to you. It's getting ridiculous where you can't post a cogent thought without someone wanting to attack you.

Good idea wallymac! Let them have it out on some specific board as opposed to littering all the OT boards with that garbage.

I never mentioned your name or refered to you in any way. I was speaking in general about sissies...

There is no way my post could be mistaken as a personal attack...on anyone...it was a very general, fun post.

Why are you on the deffense....do you feel that you may be a sissy? [Big Grin]

Easy now....pots and kettles...

How much of this problem reaches back to calling anyone that questioned dubya or any of his crowd unpatriotic and un-American and communist and so on? (Which, by the way, has been standard republican fare since Reagan used it as his norm. He is often proudly quoted for his "Speak no evil about any republican" but the corollary of it being acceptable to level any accusation even absurd ones, toward any democrat gets a pass.)

Poor people are not lazy or "no counts"!

Democrat and socialist are not synonyms! (And certainly, neither is communist.)

Conservative does not imply correctness!

Unemployed does not imply ne'er-do-well!

And the list goes on.....

Bdgee - wrong again!

Socialists are unpatriotic and Un-American.

Many poor people are poor because they are lazy.

The democratic party HAS been stolen by the socialists.

Obviously, conservatives are correct.

and the list goes on...

Smithsonian Magazine has a pretty good article entitled Election Day 1860 in the Nov. issue...

things aren't even close to bad right now, compared to that time...

Lincoln didn't give speeches,or debate becuase in his own words:

And, now my friend - for such I esteem you personally - do not misunderstand me. I have not decided that I will not do substantially what you suggest. I will not forbear doing so, merely on punctilio and pluck. If I do finally abstain, it will be because of apprehension that it would do harm. For the good men of the South - and I regard the majority of them as such - I have no objection to repeat seventy and seven times. But I have bad men also to deal with, both North and South - men who are eager for something new upon which to base new misrepresentations - men who would like to frighten me, or at least, to fix upon me the character of timidity and cowardice. They would seize upon almost any letter I could write, as being an awful coming down." I intend keeping my eye upon these gentlemen, and to not unnecessarily put any weapons in their hands.

Our Constitution's framers created the vice-presidency almost as an afterthought. In setting up a system for electing presidents, they devised an electoral college and provided that each of its members was to vote for two persons, "of whom one at least shall not be an Inhabitant of the same State with themselves." In those days when loyalty to one's state was stronger than to the new nation, the framers recognized that individual electors might be inclined to choose a leader from their own immediate political circle, creating the danger of a crippling deadlock, as no one candidate would win a plurality of all votes cast. By being required to select one candidate from outside their own states, electors would be compelled to look for individuals of national stature. Under the system the framers created, the candidate receiving the most electoral votes would be president. The one coming in second would be vice president.

In the election of 1800, however, the constitutional system for electing presidents broke down, as both Jefferson and Aaron Burr received the same number of electoral votes. This impasse threw the contest into the House of Representatives, where for thirty-five separate ballots, neither candidate was able to gain a majority. When the stalemate was finally broken, the House elected Jefferson president, thus making Aaron Burr our third vice president. Within four years of this deadlocked election, Congress had passed, and the necessary number of states had ratified, the Twelfth Amendment to the Constitution, instituting the present system wherein electors cast separate ballots for president and for vice president.

Pagan, as much as your idea may have good intentions, its very nature violates Ameriacan rights. There is something called free speech that allows one person to call another person an idiot, or dolt, or moron on this message board. In the same fashion, the accused dolt, moron, or idiot can fire back that said poster is uneducated and lazy etc... I could go on.

Now, some of the attacks that I have seen here, would clarify as defamation and/or slander but on a messaage board, cmon.

Pagan,

I'd sure hate too see you stop posting here. Please reconsider while we consider this question.

Admittedly, I have often wondered myself about the low level of intelligent posting. Although I have no problem intervening on trading threads, I had come to the conclusion that most on the off-topic threads enjoy "trading barbs"--to some degree or another, some more, some less.

CJ, bad or good, "free speech" does not apply here in the sense that it does in the public arena. We are all here in "Bob's house," so to speak. To that end, he relies to a certain commendable degree on the mods to influence and maintain a certain tone, or decorum, if you will.

In turn--and I'm speaking for myself here, but my sense of it is this: in the off-topic threads, we mods depend to a certain degree on the "core members" and what seems acceptable in our community. In other words, yes, I sorely miss a higher tone of discourse, but I hesitate to restrain members who seem to enjoy insulting one another. In fact, you may notice that I occasionally resort to what I consider a well deserved insult.

Also, I must admit, I believe somewhere in the mix is the record-of-fact that some of we "old-timers" *do* enjoy mixing it up with each other, and we play pretty hard ball. But, like trading pennies, it's not really a sport for the under-qualified.

So here's my short-term suggestions:

1) remember about throwing stones, the Golden Rule, etc

2) focus on the argument, rather than the member who posted it

3) remember, you always have the "Report Post" option, next to the whistle icon.

Again, Pagan, I hope you stick around, and I'm sure others here do, too. In fact, thanks for bringing this up, on a public thread.

Tex,

Isn't Bob's world in America? I'll answer that, yes, and as such; don't OUR rules apply here? I understand the need for moderators because of the "poo slinging" that comes with free speech, but it is borderline at times to say the least. And I am not talking about the deletion of pointless or meaningless posts, which would actually fall under the same rule. I am talking about the selection of which posts to delete from record and which to save? Off topic is off topic, let 'er slide. However, I should be able to say anything (within FCC (or whoever the **** regulates the net) guidlines) on any board at any time without deletion.
Taste and stomach are Irrelevant in the public forum, if you don't like what you hear/see/read, don't go there anymore!!!!!!!!! Where the he!! did the common sense go???? Bgesus.. never mind [Wink]

Yikes, CJ

To tell the truth, I thought most everybody was up on "the rules" about message boards, forums, etc.

Bottom line, Allstocks is no different from any other board in this one, basic sense: Members are not in public. Even though it's cyberspace, it's nonetheless a private space. That's what I meant about being "Bob's house."

In that sense, think about it being your own home.

You can allow anyone you want in your own home. You can also ask them to leave. For instance, suppose someone starting hitting on, or insulting, your wife. Or your kids...

Are you obliged to allow their complete freedom of expression? I'll answer that: NO! of course not. Why? It's YOUR HOUSE, not the public square.

Now, if someone slanders you or your family in the public square, you *do* have legal recourse, via the court system. BUT, you have no legal standing to have them removed from the public square...that is, no legal standing as you would if it were your own house/property. To take it to extremes: Do you think you should be forced to allow burning crosses on your property, simply because otherwise the KKK's freedom of speech is threatened?

All that being said, you gotta concede we allow a pretty freewheelin' forum on off-topics.

And THAT being said? I still support Pagan's call for higher discourse.

[Wink]

PS: by the way, anything that mods delete are first reported, logged, and saved to archive. Given some of the scammers that have tried to set up shop here in the past, such a practice is an unfortunate necessity.

[Cool]

lol...maybe

or, perhaps I'm not quite catching the concept.

As I understand the issue, maybe a better title would be "The Trading Insults" thread? That is, if your objective is to insult the IQ, demeanor, spelling, etc of your opponent... then dogpile here.

Otherwise, I get the sense that the endless namecalling back 'n forth has run its course.

make sense?

Yaw'll need to get off Pagan's azz.

And yaw'll need to offer a bit of concern for decorum with him.

He's correct, Bob has the right to remove any one of us or anything anyone of us post and the right to restrict how we act or interact here.

I don't agree with the extreme remedy Pagan proposed, in that it imposes responsibilities on how Bob and the moderators use their rights that should not be necessary with a group of adults. But I do with his plea for civility here and you should too.

And Bob has the right to expect those who post here to act at least adult enough that he needn't play the kindergarten playground monitor and send folks off the playground when they pull hair and throw rocks. He has better things to do.

Too damned many of you spent too damned much time playing Space Invaders and wiping out and zapping whatever you saw on a screen. You still are playing a childish game whenever you get the chance and you forget that these are not simply electronic images of a machine generated enemy.

Just because you find it on "the net" so that it shows up on the screen of your machine where you play Space Invaders doesn't make it reasonable to attack it unmercifully like you do the Invader rocket ships in order to score another kill and get a bigger score in the game. It's a forum, NOT AN ELECTRONIC GAME.

The people and their post you attack here are not electronic imaginary targets, designed specifically for you to destroy in a silly game and get more points! They may not wish to be nothing but a toy in your egocentric game. And they have a right to expect that you show some amount of respect for normal social decorum, including not incessantly insulting everyone with name calling of whoever you want to demean today.

You wouldn't want to be part of any group that went about in public calling folks names and intentionally insulting minorities and screaming insults. Why do it here?

Have you no respect for others simply because you can't see and feel and hear them? Are you really so insensitive that you think referring to others in derogatory terms and demeaning names is acceptable, whatever they are are aren't and whether or not they are or are not present?

Pagan has asked that we consider cleaning up the way we treat people here. Doesn't sound like a bad idea to me and, even if it did, because it is a concern to him, it should be respectfully considered by all of us.

How does that reconcile with what you actually post, bdgee? Such as this attack on CCM:

quote:
You need to go play in some kiddie porn room so you can be among people of your own kind with the same sort of moral and mental depth.

You are a sorry pitiful excuse for a human being.

Posted by bdgee on :

CCM, like you, PM, spends 90% of his post in vicious, bigoted, and dishonest attacks on others. Responses to such post are not recognized as attacks by anyone that isn't a crude jackazz in the first place. It's a defense of appropriate and decent decorum.

You are a hateful slime ball with nothing beneficial to say about anything. The world doesn't deserve you. Perhaps cow could learn to respect others once he gets his head out. In his case it may be curable.

IF you are human, it has yet to be determined. If determined in the end that you are, you shouldn't be imposed on polite civil society.

Tex,

Good idea turning this thread into "Trading Insults" thread. Maybe it will unclog some of the other boards from some of the personal bickering posts. That was my only gripe anyway. Clicking on an updated thread that your interested in only to find that it was just an insult post against another poster. Anyway, I've said my peace on the issue. As you were fellow posters! Show me any post where I've attacked anyone on this forum like Bdgee does! The worst think I've ever called anyone is "Professor Gibberish". I don't call the people on this forum childish names or post 3rd grade insults like bdgee does.

Posted by bdgee on :

The problem is, PM, you are clearly too ignorant to be able to understand that you are so fiercely bigoted and so limited in social grace that you think that trash talk you spew so eagerly isn't insulting. I have no doubt that you believe we applaud that stuff, just as you do.

We don't.

Nor does any responsible person in any normal social situation. Believe it or not, this is supposed to be a normal social environment. If you must insist on that hate and vitriol and bigotry, why not go find some KKK forum, or its equivalent, where that crap is the norm and you can be comfortable.

It would do no good to demonstrate it by showing examples, as you demand, because you refuse to recognize the slander and hate you post for what it is in the first place.

It would be like asking a colorblind person to identify the color blue.

(You are not alone here in that fault, but you are the prime instigator and the most guilty.)

Posted by Propertymanager on :

So, I guess the answer is that you couldn't find a single incident where I have personally insulted anyone on this forum or called anyone names (like you do).

One of your many problems is that you don't understand other opinions. In your world, anyone that doesn't agree with you is hateful, bigotted, and a racist. RIDICULOUS!

Socialist Party USA: Statements
-
Statement on Iran
by the SPUSA International Commission - August, 2008

A military attack on Iran is a real possibility. George Bush, in the waning days of his Administration, may launch an attack on Iran, or Israel, with the US blessing, may launch such an attack on its own. Another scenario is that this administration may ratchet up the pressures on Iran, leaving it to the next administration, either Obama or McCain, to initiate a military attack and occupation. In any case, the Socialist Party opposes the use of military force or economic sanctions to deal with the problems involving Iran.

From a socialist point of view, Iran represents a profound tragedy. Iran (known as Persia until 1935) is home to what an historian has termed "one of the world's oldest continuous major civilizations, with historical and urban settlements dating back to 4000 BC". US involvement with Iran begins in a serious way in 1951, after the elected Prime Minister, Dr. Mohammed Mossadegh, nationalized Iran's oil reserves. (This was an enormously popular move with the Iranian public). Britain then invited the US to join it in overthrowing the elected government of Mossadegh and installing Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. And this happened in 1953, one of the "successes"
of which the CIA has been so proud. (Mossadegh was arrested and held in house arrest until his death some years later).

The reign of the Shah was brutal, his secret police, SAVAK, trained with the aid of the CIA, crushed dissent. The Ayatollah Khomeini, supreme religious leader in Iran, was sent into exile. With the British/CIA plot that overthrew the elected government, there was an end of any hope for a secular and democratic movement. The Iranian Revolution, also known as the Islamic Revolution, began in 1978, with demonstrations that increased in fury until the Shah fled in January of 1979. With the return of the Ayatollah from exile, Iran became, by an overwhelming popular vote, an "Islamic Republic" in December of that year, with Khomeini the Supreme Leader of the country.

This is a very short, condensed history of an extremely turbulent period, brought on by the US/British effort to control the oil reserves of Iran. There was a deep hatred of the US, and a fervent desire to "export" the Islamic revolution to other countries. It was during this period, compounding the dismal history of US foreign policy, that Iraq, with the blessing of the US, attacked Iran. (Donald Rumsfeld met with Saddam in Baghdad in December of 1983, shaking hands, and confirming US support for Iraq and its military attack. This was more than verbal support. The U.S. navy shelled Iran from the Strait of Hormuz and shot down an Irani passenger plane, killing more than 200 civilians.) It is reliably estimated that at least a half million Iraqi and a half million Iranian youths lost their lives during this eight year war.

The Ayatollah crushed the left opposition in Iran, which had actively participated in the coalition that overthrew the shah. Iran remains an Islamic Republic, with final political power resting in the hands of the Shia Clergy. The Iranian regime has consistently pursued reactionary policies that have sought to silence every form of popular protest, while instituting policies that confine women to a subservient status.

President Ahmadinejad, who acts as a spokesperson for this theocratic regime, has made several statements that alarmed Israel and offended public opinion in the West. He has questioned the Holocaust and referred to the State of Israel as "a stinking corpse". Nevertheless, he has not, at any time, said Iran would attack Israel. (Israel and US
neo-conservatives have relied on inaccurate translations of Ahmadinejad's statements - what Ahmadinejad has said is that the present State of Israel will collapse, not so different from US hopes that the Soviet Union would
collapse. Certainly Iran is deeply hostile to Israel, but it has never threatened a military attack on it).

Iranian statements need to be seen within the context of the history of the past fifty years. Iran was not involved in World War II, and it has suffered deeply from Western interventions after that war. However, this in no way excuses these comments and the Socialist Party condemns them.

However what has alarmed the West has not been the insensitive and offensive language of Ahmedinejad, but the fear the Iran might gain nuclear weapons. And this question needs to be looked at quite soberly, since no rational person wants to see more nuclear powers. Iran has said it is not seeking nuclear weapons, but only nuclear power (something which we deplore but which it has every international right to develop).

But assuming that Iran does secretly plan to develop nuclear weapons some time in the future, why is this more disturbing than the fact that Israel has an estimated 150 nuclear weapons? Iran would not be the first nuclear power in the Middle East, but the second. Under what logic is the US willing to go to war to prevent Iran from gaining such weapons, but not prepared to act against Israel? The record of the two countries is significant - Israel has launched pre-emptive air strikes in the past on Iraq and Syria, and (depending on whose version of the history you accept) launched at least one major war (the 1956 attack on Egypt, in alliance with Great Britain and France). Iran, on the contrary, has not attacked any of its neighbors within living memory.

While the acquisition of nuclear weapons by Iran is one factor driving U.S, policy, it is far from the only one. Islamic fundamentalism represents an ideological threat to U.S. control of the Middle East. Furthermore, U.S. based oil corporations, in particular Exxon-Mobil, covet Iran's huge oil reserves. The United States is seeking to control a key strategic and financial asset, Middle Eastern oil reserves, and an attack on, followed by the occupation of, Iran would be one further step in making this extension of the empire a reality.

The Socialist Party believes in the need to create a nuclear free Middle East, with serious, thorough international inspections of every country in the area. If Israel would agree to this, it would be a major step toward ending the rush of the Arab and Islamic states to secure weapons of mass destruction. The race to gain such weapons was an inevitable effort by other powers in the Middle East to feel more secure against Israel.

An attack on Iran by either the US or Israel would have extremely serious consequences, including a sharp increase in the price of oil. (In fact, it is that economic reality that provides some hope that the US or Israeli
will not attack.) Iran possesses a fairly advanced military machine, and would be able to strike deep within Israel, and also to intervene more directly in Iraq.

One of the ironies of the Bush policy of invading Iraq was that it created a vast political vacuum into which Iranian influence has moved. The Iraq War weakened Iraq, and left Iran as the strongest single influence in Iraq (many of the current Iraqi political leaders were in exile in Iran during Saddam's regime).

As democratic socialists, hope to see a secular, progressive and democratic government in Iran, and support all such movements within Iran and elsewhere in the region. At the same time, the U.S. government and its allies need to accept the fact that Iran is emerging as a major power in the area, and diplomatic rather than military approaches must be supported. The Socialist Party absolutely opposes every effort to build up a war hysteria against Iran, as we opposed the attack on Iraq. If the criminal actions of the US invasion of Iraq prove nothing else, it is that the military approach to Middle Eastern conflicts must be resisted.

Wow, you seem to be incapable of reading and understanding a post. My original post on this thread acknowledged that I have leveled a few attacks in my time here on Allstocks. But it seems you understand only what you want to. Your wit is dull, you attacks foolish, but by all means proceed with your ineptitude. [Good Luck]

The good thing is that this socialist party isn't too bright! I love this paragraph. The working people own the means of production and then form a union so that they can strike against themselves!!! Brilliant!

Hey, what's down there on the floor you like the taste of? Just practicing for speaking in tongues, maybe, or are you looking for food?

I was surprised at your post. I have never before had cause to suspect you know what the word respect refers to. Then I realized I was making a mistake and this isn't any reason either. You are cutting an pasting stuff you get by formula from a web site for the mentally stilted and language impaired.

This thread seems barren without me.
Clearly anyone who can't stomach a few cross words on a message board needs to be restrained and medicated.
What I have seen on this board in the last five years is fewer and fewer names being called and far more legitimate arguments/ discussions.
Yes Bdgee gets a bit testy when trying to explain his points..
PM whines like the 12 year old she is when he does it.
So what?
Who cares.
If anyone wants I can go back to the old me and we can then discuss the name calling issue again.

I really don't get this at all. This is a message board. If you don't like something don't respond to it. Most who make comments that are attacked based just want a reaction. I get a kick out of reading them. Plus I would argue what do you expect when you talk about politics?? Most are hard headed when it comes to that kind of stuff so you should expect reactions that might get you going. I don't think its that big of a deal but that my opinion.

Okay...now to be serious....

What makes Allstocks different from another board...say like IHUB???

Allstocks isn't ran like a dictatorship, where Big Brother is allways watching your every post...ready to send you to IHUB Jail...and make you beg and write stupid essays to get out!!!

Do you want Allstocks to create an Allstock's Jail...where Bob Frey becomes like Matt at Ihub???

I didn't think so.....Allstocks is Uniquely Awesome, and we should keep it that way!!

But here is a solution...instead of wrecking Allstocks and turn it into everything that is wrong with Ihub...what not create a designated Board...that is just for insults or letting off steam. We can call it something like..."Official Insult Board"...or something to that nature!!

That way we can keep intelligent debates or discussions on track...and when you feel the urge to drop down to a third grader's level...go to "official insult board"...and then and only then will it be okay to call bdgee a "Flame-Job that likes it Scooby Style"...just a randome Example....

LOL...

i stopped posting picks after the DTC decided to freeze about 20,000$ of mine for over three years now...

i try not to complain too much, i mean it's only money right?

and the SEC says they know what happened and that we can trade now, but for some reason the DTC didn't get the memo...

if i post a pick and the DTC doesn't like it? they just sell fake shares to you until you are out of buying power and then they wait a year or two to buy them back. Sometimes they don't even bother to buy them back, why should they when they don't have to?
