Hello.
I have been encouraged by one of your fellow boarders to post news of my father here.

Dad (a.k.a. "T e x") was burned in a fire in his home. He got burned pretty badly, but the worst of his injuries was the damage to his lungs caused by smoke inhalation. He is making an amazing recovery and I have no doubts that he'll be posting for himself within the next couple of months (sooner, I hope). But for now, he is in the hospital, stable, but not really able to communicate due to his sedation.

I knew he was active on a stock bb, but I didn't know which one. His computers were incinerated by the fire, so his online contingent has had to remain a mystery to us until one of you reached out. (Thank you!)

Please forgive me for not providing more information than this. I know he thought well of this community, but as I do not know you myself, and as his profile does not indicate that he shared his name, I have decided it's best to leave it at this.

I would encourage you to direct any well-wishes you may have for him through this board, because I know he will be eager to be back in touch when he is able. And in case you're wondering: Yes. He will recover. I have no doubts. Not a one.

Blessings to you all,
My Father's Daughter
a.k.a Niña de Tex

Yes, we will all miss him here, but some of us, used to Tex by his real name and identity, miss him in the real world.

Hopefully you will let us know when he is able to see visitors and, then, I will even venture eastward into the sickness that is Dallas to see him.

He always was and I'm sure he'll continue to be one of the best. Please let him know that we're all thinking of him.

My heart dropped when I read what you wrote and I can only offer my prayers for his recovery. Your dad is a very special man! These boards can be a persons home away from home(an extended family) and he has brightened these rooms with his presence. I have spoken to your father via the telephone in the past and felt an endearment towards him. Please keep us updated daughter of my friend...

I'm not one to post often but I read the message board each day. Tex is one of a kind. A great guy. Has a stong opinion but never forces his opinion on anyone else. I Pray for his recovery like everyone else does on this board.

Please send my wishes for a speedy recovery to him and keep us appraised to his progress.

I miss Tex a great deal. Whenever I post, I do so with Tex in the back of my mind. I know this sounds strange, but I want him to respect my posts as I do his. He has been the wise one around here. Sane against the chaos. Always intelligent and insightful. I really, really like the man. I hope there is a way that we, as a community, can find a way to help out him and his family. Individually..we must do what our heart tells us.

Please recover fully , Tex, ...Nina..thank you for your post and stay strong for your father and family..We love you , Tex..

I'm with Mag, I felt sick to my stomach when I read your first two sentences. Tex is as good a "friend" as you can have on an online message board. Very glad that I am writing a message that he will be able to see again, instead of eulogizing. Wishing him a speedy and full recovery for all the reasons that have already been mentioned in this thread.

Hello, all.

Just wanted to let you know that today is the fourth day that Dad's been off the ventilator (though he still has a tracheostomy.) Things are looking great and his sedation has been tapered off, so he's able to communicate in a meaningful way these days, by writing things down. It won't be long (and understand that our perspective on "long" has been permanently altered by his now 5 weeks in the hospital) until he can check in here himself and give you his own update.

Thanks again for all your kind words. You - even in the semi-anonymous world of the Web - have definitely met the man I know. He's true blue, for sure.

I am so sorry -- wow. I hope I didn't get anyone too excited by seeing a post from Dad's handle. That really creeped me out. I was on my husband's laptop and didn't realize that the board automatically signed Dad on from when he was visiting us here in Denver earlier this year.

That won't happen again. Next time you see a post from T e x, it'll be him, I promise.

Apologies and blessings,
NdT

Posted by nina-de-tex on :

No, I logged off. Dunno his pw. I wanted to respect his privacy. I think Pagan's idea is a great one, and I'll see if I can make that happen on Monday. Then, if he wants us to check PMs for him, we'll do so with his permission. Please understand that some things are still a little fuzzy for him, so we'll let him take it all in in his own time.

Thanks again, all! And thanks, Glassman, for helping to make these connections.

I am told Tex is making good progress.
His computer was destroyed in the fire, and he's going to have a long recovery.

i've requested that Tex's family (nina) set up an account so we could all get together to get Tex a laptop. I lost a house to a fire about ten years ago and the insurance was a pain in the butt, and slow as ****, and i wasn't even hurt. I am assuming that he's going to be in the hospital for quite awhile yet, and i bet a laptop would make his time there alot better. Besides, we'll hear from him sooner...

Thanks Glass for developing a way we can all do something for Tex.

You are waaayyyy cool. [Were Up]

Posted by nina-de-tex on :

Thanks, Glassman. Dad will be so touched. If it happens quickly enough, I can deliver it to him next week when I return to Texas. I think a goal of $800-$1000 would get him a nice, dependable machine, don't you? And since he won't be settled back in his house for some months, a laptop will be the perfect thing.

Since I have no way of projecting what you guys will end up raising, I guess if there's a huge surplus, rest assured that it will go towards his mounting medical costs and costs of living, as he does not have medical insurance and won't be able to work for some time. I will report the progress of the fund daily. I know you guys like fast, frequent updates.

You're a great, supportive community for one another. What a blessing.

Sincerely,
NdT

Glassman, You are the type of person that people need when they are down. This is my opinion formed from everything I've seen you post as well as what you are trying to do now to get TEX the new laptop.
TEX can get the new lap top to talk with us. But according to his daughter, TEX has no insurance.
Therefore I would like to make a challenge to all of the well wishers and friends of TEX on the board.
I will put $100 into a fund. Glassman, you pick the place to put it. Then everyone who matches my $100 has a vote as to what stock to invest in.
Glassman, you determine, from the best of the best of the people on the board, who picks the stock. Take all of the proceeds. Roll the dice. Proceeds go to TEX.
What you think?

I did the search for the post on tex on the stock side and it shows but it will not pull them up.

If there is any way they can be pulled up and maybe placed on this side to make it easy for nina-de-tex. Thanks.

i like your enthusiasm rk,
Tex may not have health coverage, if so?
i missed that,
but i am pretty sure he has homeowners...

we need to give Tex time to heal right now...

there are philanthropic people we could approach on his behalf if this is catastrophic for him, but we need to wait and allow him to make decisions, in the meantime, most charitable organisations sell gifts of stocks immediately for a very good reason...

there are some very good stock pickers here, but actually choosing buy and sell points even on good stocks can be very difficult, especially with half the board looking over your shoulder, and there can only be one person on the buy-sell key...

you know, to my knowledge? Cramer has never released any actual proof of his trading ability? i like the guy we see on TV, he makes alot of good picks, but i have to say, i expect Jim to stroke out at any time [Eek!] ...

BTW? i am not doing this laptop thingy, we all are... quite a few did something like this for me once and the goal is for Tex to be able to do this for somebody else in the very near future....

I would have never found this had one of the posts not come from Tex's account directly. I have been wondering what happened to him, he never replied to a PM and I saw that he hadnt posted in weeks. I decided to check again today and found this thread. I had hoped it wasnt something like this. [Frown]

I see now that he is "making good progress" but im still crushed by the news. I'll be watching more closely now and hope for a speedy recovery!!

Tex is a very good man...grumpy and bluntly honest at times, but easily one of my favorites from here and I have a ton of respect for him. Please pass on my best wishes!

Wow, you all.

As promised, I'm here to post your progress. Here's what you've done in less than 24 hours:

NET: $482.86 (that's less the paypal fees, of course.)

I can't wait to see his face when I tell him where his shiny new laptop came from. He's going to be stunned.

Posted by The Bigfoot on :

I have also posted the link on Rockband Inc. (The other board he mod's for on I-hub.)

Alright guys, we're off to a good start but we can do better.

Time for a PM chain. If you know anyone who knows Tex it is time to message them and tell em what we are trying to do here.

$1000 for a new computer is a good goal but lets not forget what hospital stays can do to a family budget. If we can go higher (and based on the response so far I think we can) then lets kick butt and get TEX taken care of!

BF

actually i can't take credit for the idea, there's a couple of other posters that nudged me here. all i did was call best buy to ask about how to get a gift card fund there and they gave me a runaround and eventually lost me in their computerised phone system, so i asked Nina to open a paypal account... which was easier (for me) anyway, and posted it.

Just an FYI.

I was having trouble with my posts on Ihub getting noticed before they get buried so I am trying another tactic. I have started a board a new board in the Free Zone over there called Friends of Tex.

I have a link to the fund as well as a link over here (that I might have to remove if Matt doesn't like it) and will add the updates as they come over on that board as well.

Perhaps more of his friends over there will find the info that way.

Thanks,

You have a big heart Glass.
Just like many walks through life, the experiences we live through make it easier to recognize what we can do to try and make something just a little easier for the next person. Allstocks has been a GREAT help to me and Tex has been an EXCELLENT mentor. I wish him the best and hope to see him back here soon! Cheers Glass, a great show of compassion to a person well deserved imo, a thousand times over.

Hey folks,

I am going to be headed out of town tomorrow for a week. Would anybody here be willing to take on the task of posting updates at I-hub from Friday to next Saturday?

Thanks,

BF,
Folks can feel free to send cards to

Friends of Tex (Unless you've got his name)
P.O. Box 884
Hurst, TX 76053

Also, as far as the house goes, Peaser, it's going to need a new roof, new back corner re-framed, and all flooring, drywall, and cabinetry/built-in shelving throughout will have to ripped out due to smoke damage. Not the best news, sure, but despite their fire damage, both Dad and the house are able to be repaired. And that's a good thing!

Wow!! I hadn't looked at this part of allstocks for a few weeks. Tex was helping me with a project and I was wondering why he had lost interest in it. Last time he responded he was doing some taping because his son if I remember was moving in. I'm sorry to hear about the fire and Tex's injuries but glad to hear it sounds like he is coming home shortly. I missed out on helping with the laptop to. please put the $100 I send in under the name Northwoodsent toward his medical bills.
Nina once his home owners is set if you wish and I would certainly be happy to do it. You could use the money to buy a two way ticket to your closest airport and I will resheet and shingle his roof for him. I would just need a bed to sleep in for the week. The money you would save on labor could go toward something else he needs.

JGRE: What an amazing offer. I've sent you a PM about it.

And, all: Dad will see this for himself shortly because, today, HE'S OUT OF THE HOSPITAL! As soon as he gets his bearings and feels up to it, I know he'll be checking in here with you all. And since I figured he'd see this thread before I'm able to get there with the laptop on Wednesday, I went ahead and told him our surprise this morning. He is so very touched.

You're a wonderful, wonderful group of people.

love,
Niña de Tex

Hey, gang,

Can't quite say, "I'm back" just yet, but I had to thank you...one and all. For one thing, I'm writing to you on my brand new Dell laptop, with the Intel Core2 Duo chip and studio monitor, four mountains of RAM and a mountain range of storage, plus DVD R/W drive. Quite a machine you all ponied up for...My daughter delivered it last week, and I'm still test-driving, but it's a really nice machine and a wonderful aid to me right now. Thank You.

Second: I tried to read this thread at one sitting...and couldn't do it. I got too choked up.

In other words, I also appreciate your kind words and strong support. You are the best, and you explain why this remains my home board. And, yup, I know some pals from da Hub chipped in, too, but it all started here. Again, my thanks...

As for me, I'm in a safe place, getting lots of good food (for instance, breakfast today was a celery-laced omlette, wild-pig sausage, peaches and kajillion-grain toast with juice and hot tea) and as much exercise as I can handle.

I had an outpatient follow-up today--basically, I've got a long way to go but I walk better every day and the docs say I'm ahead of schedule...

Oh...thanks also for the welcome you gave my daughter. Y'all are one class act, all the way.

Warm wishes and highest regards...I'll start being around some, slowly but surely.

Yer pal,

Tex

ya...lol, it hit me on the way to get a BBQ sandwich.

Well, obviously the most famous is about peeps living lives of quiet desperation. Then there's a famous one about simplicity...planning and living a simplified life.

truth be told, I never finished Walden...each page had at least one mind-blowing sentence--I'd read some then think it over for a year or two. I need to pick it back up...

Posted by T e x on :

Here's a couple I found, not off the top of my head, simplicity first:

Go confidently in the direction of your dreams! Live the life you've imagined. As you simplify your life, the laws of the universe will be simpler.

Now, my favorite:

Do not be too moral. You may cheat yourself out of much life. Aim above morality. Be not simply good; be good for something.

Go with ecstatic, my buddy...

True, it's sad I will lose my family home. But I gotta tell you, being alive after dodging a bullet like that changes your perspective. Had I lost my home to the mortgage-company crooks without this experience? I may have become a bitter, old man.

However, as it is, I get some say in who buys my place and should have enough moolah to start over--of course, on a much smaller scale...but alive.

I smile a lot.

I went back to work today. Got a call for an install that required somebody with electrical/neon experience to get in the attic for a new restaurant. So I wound up working the second half of the day. It's dark in there and somewhat cramped, but it went real well.

Felt real good to have my tools back on, climbing ladders and using my agility. Still not 100% but dadgum, I did it. Very happy about that...

And still so terrifically grateful for all you guys' support.

Mag,

I gotta tell ya a lil inside: because of the tender skin on my left hand, I had gotten myself some of those work gloves without fingers (CAT brand, in this case). Man, alive. I used to think they were sissy stuff--now, I wish I had been using them for years. I would've saved myself many a nick, slice and scrape: working inside those transformer boxes, you almost can't help slicing or nicking some part of your hand.

Ya, thanks, gang...

OK, so here's the background...can't remember whom I've told what, lol. Between the crooked mortgage companies and either incompetent or malfeasant attorney that my family hired while I was unconscious, I got a bad, undeserved hickey on my credit report, which left me unable to get a mortgage on a new house, even though I was able to pay more than half down.

So I had to find private money, which I was able to do only because of my standing in the community, not because of any special business acumen. We made a deal that had my "white knight" offering to NOT profit from securing a house for me...IF he could buy my burned house at a nice discount...the idea being that he would make his money by rehabbing the burnout in such a fashion as to sell it for a profit.

Handshake deal, alla way. No contract...and we're off to the races, with me eventually looking at literally hundreds of properties since Oct/Nov. In fact, in one two-day period around the holidays, I looked at 102 properties. As we all know, lottsa foreclosures out there...

Well, we kept getting outbid. Finally we figured out that I was competing with many, many investors throughout North Texas, and perhaps beyond. If you recall, I started hunting about the time the "bailout" news was in full swing.

So many peeps who had yanked out their dough from stocks have been looking to recovery by buying real estate cheap...EXCEPT, they're not real estate pros, either. So they didn't mind paying $4, $5 even $6 grand over a reasonable distressed price. I lost one property about 4 months ago to someone who was willing to pay above ask, which would suggest they were hot to move in as a primary residence. Yet, last time I drove by about 2 weeks ago? nobody's in it, yet...sheesh.

Anyway, very frustrating...

Meanwhile, my attorney had bungled negotiations with the mortgage company so poorly that they still owe me about $7 grand. And up until a coupla weeks ago, I *still* had not gotten my Notice of Release of Lien.

In case any of you or your friends are going though similar circumstances, lemme tell you: your attorney fighting foreclosure MUST get your release of lien when you pay off a mortgage.

In my case, I had realized that not only was the mortgage company was at fault but also that I was probably going have to sue my own attorney. So I requested a copy of my file, which produced documents that allowed me to secure my release of lien in one, 10-minute phone call...

...something he had not been able to do in 8 months.

Securing that document broke the log jam.

So...now I own a 3-bed, 2-bath home with a nice kitchen layout, a killer-diller fireplace, a separate space for an office (so I don't have to take a bedroom for the office), and space underneath for a root cellar or additional storage...PLUS truck/trailer access to the back for equipment, and land left over for a small workshop and a garden large enough to prolly feed 2 or 3 families.

Sure, it needs work. But at the price I could afford, anything I got would need work. And, of course, I can do the work...or call in friends who can.

Moral of the story for me: no matter how much I *thought* I wanted those other houses we got outbid on, the universe held back for me the best match for my needs and abilities.

And once again, I thank all of you and the few linked/related from iHub who have been so incredibly supportive. To this day, I have been able to get back on line only because of the laptop y'all bought me. Sure, once I got going again, months after getting out of the hospital, I could have bought replacement machines for my former network, cuz I know how to buy them cheap. And the outright donations have been crucial, too, because of not being able to work a full work-week...

As far the laptop goes, in the motel and my current lil duplex, I have had no room for my former setup. So, my very nice Dell Studio has kept me in touch, allowed a few trades, and brought in some business. Not to mention dealing with the legal, mortgage, and medical issues...

My daughter ("Nina de Tex") is planning to be here for my birthday in a few weeks. So I'm thinking I'll schedule the housewarming for then. If all goes as planned, I'll be able to post some pics for anybody interested.

To end, I will say this has been the most humbling experience of my life...

Love,

Tex

Glad to see things are finally looking up for you... congratulations

But, ya... thanks: I feel like I've had a breakthrough, for sure.

I need one to document my jobs, anyway...

Any suggestions?

Good news is great too hear in these times.

The most fun is fixen up the house the way you want it. I always found it the easiest work of all.

Camera you say. 4 megapixel is probably the lowest out there now a days but do not go lower than that. 4 meg pics still blow up OK for clarity but you can find higher megs with a bit of a zoom for very cheap. Also look at the memory card to see if it fits in your computer. If not a card reader is cheap but something else to carry around. I have an 5 meg HP Photosmart for taking out on the boat, dirt biking and ATVing. Tough little camera.

There are lots of cameras in the pawn shops. My favorite place in the USA.
