Woman Kills 2, Herself at La. College

Feb 8, 12:30 PM (ET)

By DOUG SIMPSON

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - A young woman killed two female students in a college classroom at a vocational college Friday, then killed herself, police said.

The students apparently were shot in their seats in the second-floor classroom at Louisiana Technical College, Sgt. Don Kelly said.

Officers ran into the building within four minutes of the first 911 call, which came at 8:36 a.m., he said.

"There was mass pandemonium, people running," Kelly said. "One officer - the first into the classroom - told me he could still smell gunpowder."

The students' names and ages were not immediately released, and it was not clear whether the shooter also was a student.

The school offers classes in a dozen subjects including early childhood education, practical nursing, drafting and welding.

Students had to stay in their classrooms for about two hours before being released for the day, said Louis Davis. He said he was taking a test for an automobile technology class when a teacher "said to stay in the classroom because there's been an incident." Davis said

He said they were allowed to leave after a police officer asked them brief questions.

School administrators and campus police did not return calls or e-mails.

the last 24-48 hours has seen a few people totally "lose it"

KIRKWOOD, Mo. (AP) A gunman with a history of conflict with civic leaders is dead after storming City Hall in Kirkwood, Missouri and killing five people during a council meeting. Two police officers and three city officials are among the dead. The mayor was wounded and is in critical condition.

Details Emerge On Suspect In Bloody SoCal Shootout
Richard Winton, Molly Hennessy-Fiske and Mitchell Landsberg, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer

The standoff began shortly after a man in Winnetka called 911 saying he had gunned down three relatives.

It ended early Thursday -- more than eight hours later -- with a single round from a police sniper who killed the suspect as he emerged from his burning house firing a barrage of bullets.

In between, two highly decorated Los Angeles Police Department officers were shot, one fatally.

The LAPD was deeply shaken by the nightlong siege in an otherwise quiet San Fernando Valley neighborhood. Officer Randal Simmons, described as "the rock" of the elite SWAT team, became the first member in its four-decade history to die in the line of duty, taking a gunshot to the neck as the unit stormed the house in an unsuccessful attempt to rescue hostages and end the conflict.
A fellow SWAT officer, James Veenstra, was shot and seriously wounded but was expected to recover.

The genesis of the violence was not immediately clear but appeared to involve a dispute between the shooter and his brothers and father. Friends and relatives identified the dead as Gerardo Rivera, 50, an immigrant from El Salvador who ran a trucking company, and his sons Edgar, 19, Edwin, 20, and Andy, 21.

i feel the same way. so what are we supposed to do?

the US has had the lowest voter turnout of the top democratic nations for several cycles now.

if people don't get actively involved in the process, the people lose their voice.

people say "we can't compete against the lobbyists"...

but we can demand accountability. the last election voted out the GOP power structure.

a whole bunch of them had to leave.

this election cycle is showing the highest interest levels in years.
