'Second Base' Breast Cancer Campaign Cut Short
High School Girls' T-Shirt Promotion Prompts Lessons in Decency, Trademark Law
By DAVID SCHOETZ
Oct. 19, 2007

A T-shirt promotion by two teenage girls in Kansas who were eager to raise awareness about breast cancer, unexpectedly earned the pair a lesson in decency and trademark law.

Haley Wenthe and Jessica Sheahon, seniors at Salina Central High School, set out to raise $10,000 to fight breast cancer during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Haley's mother had died of the disease five years ago, and Sheahon's mom recently completed chemotherapy. They started raising funds by selling bracelets, temporary tattoos and beads.
Then the girls decided to have T-shirts printed with the slogan "Save 2nd Base," a reference to the slang term for a woman's breasts. The front of the shirt shows a pair of baseballs over the chest above the slogan. The back features an image of a breast cancer awareness ribbon.

But the noble idea brought the girls double trouble, from school officials who said the T-shirts were in bad taste,

Greetings To All:

As a retired school teacher, the Munchkin Man can authoritatively state the these t-shirts were clearly inappropriate for the school setting, in spite of their well-intended cause.

The school setting is not the place to call attention to a female student's private anatomy.

The intended message of these t-shirts would have been completely lost on the vast majority of the male students who attended that school.

If enough of these t-shirts had been sold, it would only be a matter of time, until a girl who was wearing one of these t-shirts would have been groped on the breasts by a horny male student.

If the Munchkin Man allowed his female students to wear these t-shirts to his math class, most of the Munchkin Man's male students would not be able to concentrate.

Putting a stop to these t-shirts was really a decision in support of the safety of the girls who might otherwise wear them.

In addition, the male students in their math classes would be able to concentrate and do their math better.

By the way, if a female's breasts are "2nd base", then where are 1st and 3rd?

Munchkin Man

Munchkin Man

Something tells me you didn't get to 1st base Mr. man.

I think it's something you should get in everybody's pocket to cure, be it horny teens or dirty old men...

Breast cancer is a scary and serious problem.
God be with those that have it, and live with it.

I assure you not a student in any class you held could focus on anything but the fact that their "teacher" was referring to himself in the third person as the munchkin man.
That and of course the security guards tasering the guy who keeps sneaking in and acting like the teacher.

It has nothing to do with me being european, it has however everything to do with being mysogenistic. Look, this wasn't an attempt to show depravity and being slutty, it was a protest for a good cause, an important one. I personally think it's people's insecurity that everything has to revolve around sex, it's JUST BREASTS. What I find offensive is that people find women's parts offensive. It's like being offended by a man's beard.

that's a) condescending, and b) it's a false generalization. Have you seen Hollywood and the amount of money they make on movies where people get shot, stabbed, mutilated, tortured and blown up? You think this was offensive and defend that with saying that Americans have standards, yet violence (movies, even music) is so well liked that they make tons of money off of it. Same goes for porn (also "offensive" to "decent people") which is a BIG business that runs WELL (meaning there's a huge audience for it). Now don't get me wrong, I am not against porn, I don't even think it's offensive. In fact! I am CONVINCED that all these people who are so much against porn have 5 times more porn hidden around the house (or computer) than the average person [Big Grin]

Get your self a copy of "Paradise by the Dashboard light" by Meatloaf, listen to it and use your imagination. The background noises tell a pretty good story MM.

Ummmmm, not really the same thing. Women do not walk around with their chest exposed like a mans beard, now you would hear no complaints from me if they did but I hsve a feeling the amount of work that would get done in my office would go down signifigantly, for the first few months anyways. Also, womens parts are not thought of as dirty, more of a social taboo in todays politicaly corect era. We just aren't suposed to talk about things like that, out of site out of mind or See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil as it were. B.S. if you ask me. Boob's rule!!

"Retired teacher"??????

Clearly a typo.....should have been "re-fired teacher"...

and re-fired for good cause, no doubt.

We don't want sickos passing on their f---ed up reasoning and life goals and failures to innocent impressionable youngsters.

I;ll let the wife see em and see if she wants one. She kinda got into baseball this year. [Smile]

50% of the profits of these shirt go to charity which is cool but that still leave a lot of profit for these kids. Maybe they'll be able to pay their way through college with these shirts. They got national attention after all.

Dear Mr. Bdgee:

For your information, the Munchkin Man is a retired teacher on disability who has never been "fired" or "re-fired."

Your false assumptions and prejudicial judgements about the Munchkin Man speak volumes.

In the meantime, the Munchkin Man is now expanding his private tutoring practice.

The Munchkin Man has discovered that private tutoring is the highest form of teaching.

A number of students have told the Munchkin Man that the Munchkin Man is the best tutor they have ever had.

Best Wishes,

Munchkin Man

Do you mean like The Order Of Operations, which you once said "has no place in mathematics" after the Munchkin Man had proven you wrong in a simple
6th grade level math problem?

The Munchkin Man has yet to find any mathematician anywhere who agrees with your statement about The Order Of Operations.

Very Sincerely,

Munchkin Man

What an idiot. In your grandiose and misguided imagination you never proved anything of any kind at any time or any place, because you haven't the competence to know what constitutes a proof, you intellectual klutz.

So what. The Munchin Man doesn't know any mathematicians or what one looks or smells like.

Isn't it the case that you are under orders to stay away from children?

No.

Obviously, it is your imagination that is misguided and out of control.

Get some help.

It is quite childish and immature of you to resort to ad hominem attacks and name calling after you have been defeated in an argument.

Very Sincerely,

Munchkin Man

high-school Latin...lol

at that point, "journalism" was pretty much covering sports.

After that, a lil college "logic" is good...wouldn't recommend much more than 2-3 semesters, though. I suspect that's what happened to Hunter Thompson.

Wonder if he ever did move like he said he was gonna? Was it California or Florida? He'd probably love these shirts, he was always raving about hot chicks.

Well, lets be careful about what we call it. Ain't many here capable of doing a DWE....too many brains.

How-some-ever, if you mean special treatment for the deserving like that which DWE deserved, count me in too.
