Not too bad today. Tomorrow is supposed to be in the mid 90's with high humidity. It's the kind of heat where after a half hour your "pouch" feels like it's floating in a bowl of soup. Not comfortable at all.

Try getting grades on a hot mix of a residue in petroleum refining and that consists chiefly of hydrocarbons... I love the smell of hot asphalt in the morning...
101 degrees here today, calling for 103 tomorrow. Drink water... SWISH!

so the effect on human skin is about 180* F...

am posting from the bottom of my ice chest, via Meraki, solar-powered WiFi node.

Gotta love Meraki, eh?

Thats a pretty high humidity index. Screw it, I'm gonna set up a cot in the basement and sleep down there, damp but cool.

Did you drink the beer before you sat in the ice chest?
You really shouldn't notice the heat if you had enough beer in it.

I saw some pictures of that on the noon news, with comments that they had not yet determined if it was a tornado.

Actually, who'n'ell gives a rat's azz if it was officially a tornado if it acted just like one and tore down your whole world.

Greetings To All:

As of 2:53 p.m. today, on the date of Wednesday, August 08, 2007, the official temperature was recorded as 99 degrees in Munchkin Land.

The Munchkin Man has a math tutoring appointment at 5:30 p.m.

The heat will not stop the Munchkin Man from honoring and keeping this appointment.

Come rain or shine, day or night, global warming or global cooling, the Munchkin Man rides off into his Toyota when duty calls, to the homes of those students whose precious minds are starving for the enlightenment and understanding that the Munchkin Man's expert math instruction provides.

Good luck to all.

Best Wishes,

Munchkin Man

I got a math question for the munchkin man....

If the MM dorve his toyota 47 MPH for 17 miles made a Uturn and went back 2 miles to pick up a crack-whore then proceeded to drive an additional 8 miles until coming to a complete stop in the grill of a peterbilt...how long would this take?

Im kidden MM be safe!

Only 72 right now buy the humidity is way up there. Still feels like the tropics around here. Much needed rain has fallen in the last two nights with more supposed to come in tonight. Damn, that means I've gotta cut the grass pretty soon.

Thank you, Mr. Rimasco.

The Munchkin Man took your advice and drove with extra safety and precaution to and from the student's home.

The Munchkin Man tutored his student in the following topics:

***Translating verbal sentences which represent inequalities into algebraic sentences with the correct inequality symbols.

***Finding the solution sets of these inequalities.

***Graphing the solution sets of these inequalities on a number line.

The Munchkin Man's student had trouble with these topics during the preceding school year.

Thanks to the Munchkin Man, she now understands these topics a lot better.

Thanks to the Munchkin Man, she will now be starting the school year greater self-confidence and intelligence.

It is often said that word of mouth is the best form of advertising.

The Munchkin Man is finding out that there is a lot of truth in this old saying.

Parents who were blessed to find the Munchkin Man as a math tutor for their children are now spreading the good word.

Now the Munchkin Man is receiving email and telephone inquiries about his tutoring services each and every single day.

The Munchkin Man is in demand!

Good luck to all.

Best Wishes,

Munchkin Man

greater intelligence? how about just less ignorance? [Big Grin]

can you recommend a good beginning algebra work-book for me to do with my kid? the schools here are, well a little questionable...
it needs to be an introductory level since the brat won't be in algebra class for a couple years yet...

Hi Mr. Glassman!

Thank you very much for writing to the Munchkin Man.

The Munchkin Man would be delighted to share some Algebra textbook and workbook recommendations for you.

The Munchkin Man can very well relate to your comment about the schools in your area.

The Munchkin Man also finds that the vast majority of "government schools", as Neal Boortz calls them, are either "questionable" at best, or unquestionably bad.

The Munchkin Man will now provide you with his personal and highly qualified recommendations:

http://www.aplusses.com/zencart/

The Munchkin Man owns both their Algebra I and their Algebra II book and also their solution manuals. As the description says:

"Our books are written in a friendly and non-intimidating workbook-like format."

These books were also written with home schoolers in mind. About one-half of the Munchkin Man's students are home-schoolers. During the past few years, the Munchkin Man has developed a great amount of respect for the home schooling movement.

Here is a link to another series of Algebra books which are very "kid friendly" and which do a very good job at "breaking the ice" for math phobic students:

http://coolmath.com/algebra/Coolmath-Algebra-the-book.html

Here is another great book which the Munchkin Man has just ordered and received. It is awesome!

http://www.artofproblemsolving.com/Books/AoPS_B_Item.php?page_id=11

The following Algebra textbook is considered to be a classic:

http://www.amazon.com/Elementary-Algebra-Harold-R-Jacobs/dp/0716710471/sr=1-2/qi d=1172197782/ref=sr_1_2/002-3978297-4464807?ie=UTF8&s=books

Here is another excellent book, one which bears the name of Margaret Lial as the lead author. Any mathematics textbook which bears her name as the lead author comes highly recommended by the Munchkin Man.

http://www.aw-bc.com/catalog/academic/product/0,1144,0321437268,00.html

For a more rigorous first year Algebra book, the Munchkin Man would also like to recommend this one:

http://phcatalog.pearson.com/program_single.cfm?site_id=6&discipline_id=806&suba rea_id=1312&program_id=21022&view_feat=1

For another rigorous series of mathematics textbooks, the Munchkin Man would recommend anything which bears the author's name of Mary Dolciani. The following is a description of a private school that uses her textbooks:

http://www.stanford.edu/~meehan/xyz/rls.html

The Munchkin Man considers the above-mentioned first year Algebra books to be the very best.

You will be hard pressed to find any of these excellent textbooks in any of America's "government schools."

That's because the vast majority of these schools are government indoctrination centers whose agenda is to dumb down their curriculums, promote the values of socialism, and eventually train them to vote for liberal Democrats.

It's a sad commentary, but it's true.

Whether you share the Munchkin Man's beliefs on this point or not, the Munchkin Man is confident that you would find any of these textbooks to be of exceptional quality.

The Munchkin Man might suggest that you order the first one mentioned in this post. This is the one from A+ Educational Services.

After reviewing this book, this should convince you of the Munchkin Man's high standards of textbook quality and excellence for his students.

The Munchkin Man insists only upon the best for his students.

Good luck!

Best Wishes,

Munchkin Man

LOL.. Munchie...

i went to one of the most well-thought of military prep schools in the country for high school..

they dumbed it down too... cuz the parents were paying cold hard cash for those grades to get into ______________ (place name of college here) ...

and cheating was rampant...

schools are for learning social skills... if you want to raise kids that can think for themselves? you have to do it yourself...

The Munchkin Man has heard similar tales about other "prestigious" private schools as well.

It's a darned shame that so many students are not getting a good solid mathematics education from a teacher of honor and integrity like the Munchkin Man.

It's enough to make the Munchkin Man cry.

Best Wishes,

Munchkin Man

well MM, i'm gonna just have to settle for doing it myself...

GLASS!!! I am scolding you for calling your kid a brat...but good job on helping him learn what the schools won't teach! [Wink] One of the reasons i friggin have to pay $8500/year/kid..for a private school...because I am not smart enough to get an algebra book and teach it to them...no wait...it's not the smarts..it's the patience...have none...LOL

Posted by glassman on :

fortunately our humidity is pretty low today, so the heat index is only about 110

It was so hot today I saw a dog chasing a cat, and they were both walking. It's hotter than Paris Hilton's underpants. It's hotter than the four sides of hell. It's hotter than a firecracker lit at both ends.

108 today to break a record??? ...broke one yesterday set back in 1918! [Eek!]

It was so hot today that I saw a robin pulling a worm out of the ground using a pot holder.

It ain't that hot here... but the humidity is still up. Was on a job today about an hour northeast of my house, and saw a bird's egg fall. Went to replace it in the nest...but it was soft-boiled by the time it hit the ground. Mama bird was the cooling, insulatory influence, apparently. No yolk, folks...

Yesterday I was rounding a corner in my truck, and I saw a fire hydrant chasing a dog. Tell me that aint hot. Over 100 degrees for 7 days straight. Heat index as high as 111.

Must be fun melting glass in that kind of heat. [Razz] I'd stay indoors. I'm on flood watch tonight. We just got our basement dry and aired out and we're supposed to get another 3" of rain tonight. Seems like we already got 2 of them though so I'm thinking about cashing it in for the night.

i ain't even turning on the lights right now up [Big Grin] ...

we used to work in these temps in the desert, just drink water and electrolytes, but the humidity here makes it impossible...
the good news is that this temp is great for curing refractory cement... i'm casting a new furnace... i try to get the heavy work done by 10AM.. that's when it hits 90...

Memphis!!!

The Munchkin Man loves Memphis!

The Munchkin Man flew to Memphis a few years ago to visit a friend.

The Munchkin Man's friend took the Munchkin Man out to a real fun place.

The Munchkin Man had the time of his life at this place.

It was called the Platinum Plus.

Boy was it hot!

The Munchkin Man can't wait to go back again.

Best Wishes,

Munchkin Man

he shoulda taken you to the Commodore Hotel.. much more fun there... at least according to Lowell George it was [Wink]

The Last Lap(dance) for Platinum Plus?
Heads they win; tails they lose.

DECEMBER 9, 2006 - 11:07 PM

Memphis D.A. Bill Gibbons is confident that the, oh, millionth time will be the charm when it comes to closing down Memphis' most notorious strip joint. Memphis police raided and padlocked "Platinum Plus" and the "Tunica Caberet" late Friday night, charging club owners with drug possession, money laundering, and prostitution.

Indictments for the charges will be handed up on Monday, December 11,2006. The raid culminates a 23-month investigation involving the Memphis Police Department and the FBI.

Police arrested more than 75 people, officials said. No word on if they were strip-searched or not.

should hit 112 today in phoenix but as people say its a dry heat

Posted by Upside on :

75 and sunny today. Lots of wind. That's the perfect recipe to start drying out the foot of rain we had over the last week. I live fairly close to the "Root River" in SE Wisconsin. There's about a 15' dam where the river is halted as it runs under a main road at that point. Until today, you couldn't see the dam, it was just one continuous flow of water that theatened to shut down the road. As of today it had dropped about 2 feet where you can see just the top of the dam so things are looking up.

Although, driving around town today it was a pretty ugly scene. Many roads are still closed and you can see the damage that was done to many homes by the furniture and bags of garbage set out by the side of the road. Pretty sad. My basement flooded with about 6" of water and I'm considering myself one of the lucky ones. Kind of funny, this was the second hundred year flood we've had in the last 5 years now. I think those stats need to be updated to where a current 100 year flood will be on the likes of the 40 days and 40 nights of Noah.
