WASHINGTON — The Air Force on Tuesday confirmed a report that in 1994 a military researcher requested $7.5 million to develop a non-lethal "love bomb" that would chemically alter the state of mind of enemy troops and make them want to have sex with each other rather than fight.

Air Force spokeswoman Lt. Col. Cathy Reardon said the idea was proposed by an Air Force researcher at a lab at Brooks Air Force Base in Texas, but it was rejected by the Defense Department. Officials noted that the Air Force is constantly considering funding proposals.

No money was spent, Reardon said, and no such weapons are currently being considered. The goal was to create a non lethal weapon to be used against enemy troops.

First reported by KPIX-TV in San Francisco, the discovery of the "gay bomb" proposal came from a Freedom of Information Act request made by Edward Hammond of Berkeley's Sunshine Project, a watchdog group that tracks military spending.

As part of the military's goal of developing non-lethal weapons, the proposal suggested, "One distasteful but completely non-lethal example would be strong aphrodisiacs, especially if the chemical also caused homosexual behavior."
The proposal also offered other ideas, like a "sex attractant" chemical that would make "annoying and injurious creatures" like stinging bugs more aggressive and draw them to the enemy's position. Another chemical would leave such a strong stench, the enemy would be detectable for weeks.

A portion of the proposal notes that some of the chemicals could be used on both enemy personnel and civilians, and would require decontamination countermeasures to nullify the effects.

A Defense Department spokesman told FOX News that he was not aware of any "love bomb" proposal, but called the idea one of the most ridiculous things he'd heard.

FOX News' Jennifer Griffin and Nick Simeone contributed to this report.

I've always though a good idea for a non-lethal weapon would be a "poison oak/ivy" bomb that dispersed the oil of these god-forsaken plants all over the place. Just imagine the poison oil all over the men and equipment, especially in the middle of the desert with 100+ deg heat beating down.... It would take a day or two for it to become effective, but just think about morale when it did. Anyone who has ever had the misfortune of coming in contact with these plants should know exactly what I'm talking about.

heh, i got a better idea...

we drop a jumbo-jet full of ticks on 'em [Big Grin]
do you have any idea how many ticks you can get on a 777? [Eek!]

i bet those suckers could easly survive a drop of 40'000 feet...

Ugggg... That seems like a good idea too. Mix that in with the poison oak/ivy bomb, and the other side gives up without a fight...

So how does one go about getting a patent and funding for this sort of thing Glass?

[Wink]

idunno NR, i am one of the rare lucky few that doesn't get poison ivy unless i really try...

i can pick the leaves with impunity...

the one time i did getit? my brother and i cut down an oak fro firewood, and i didn't bother pulling off the vines before i picked up each log and loaded it on the truck... i think we had about six pickup loads and after two days? i had a pretty bad case of it on my inner forearms.. [Frown]

i bet we could get even more chiggers on a jet..those things are so small you can't even see them with the naked eye...

Yeah it's nasty stuff. I get both really bad even if I get in it a little bit. Being a surveyor doesn't help, but after a couple times of getting the rash, you learn to spot the plants pretty easily and you can keep your distance..... Unfortunately, some people don't know until it's too late.

The poor fellow in the picture above got it from digging the roots out of the ground. Fortunately, the rash was only on his forearms.... If you don't wash up or keep coming in contact with the oil from your clothing or other items that have the oil on it, or get it in your blood stream, it can spread everywhere...and I do mean EVERYWHERE....
