If you think your phone line is wiretapped, call your local phone company. Most phone companies will inspect your lines for wiretap devices free of charge. If a tap is found, the phone company will check to see if it is authorized. The phone company will alert you if the wiretap is illegal. It will also notify law enforcement and remove the device. However, you will not be notified if the wiretap is legal, made by law enforcement and authorized by a court. However, once a legal wiretap has been discontinued, the court must notify the tapped party that the wiretapping has taken place. Normally, this notice must occur within 90 days of the wiretap termination. (18 USC 2518(8)(d))
If you discover that someone has intentionally intercepted your private phone conversations, you may be able to take legal action. If you or the phone company find an illegal tap, you should notify local law enforcement officials. In addition, you may want to consult an attorney.
Many people think if they hear noises on the phone line, like clicks, static or voices, that the line is tapped. Most wiretapping devices emit no audible sounds. If you hear others talking on your phone, you may simply be experiencing "crosstalk," a common phone problem. If you hear crosstalk or other sounds, call your local phone company's repair service and ask it to investigate the problem. Cordless telephones also may pick up others' conversations. This can happen if you and a neighbor have cordless phones which are tuned to the same channel. (See PRC fact sheet no. 2, "Wireless Communications: Cordless/Cellular Phones and Pagers.")
It is *not* tapped--you've simply triggered the phone company's little-known "3rd-person" filter. They're trying to help by translating for you...
seriously? doubtful you'd hear anything if you're tapped, especially by pros...
if you suspect some private party...remove one device at a time and see if the noise stops; if it does? have it examined...
all devices checked? trace out all lines, all the way into the interface box...
Also, quit being scared--well, be scared, but go ahead and ask folks if they hear it, too & do call the phone company...maybe it's affecting other phones, too

Scotty's been recording everything when i call them..
and YES! they beep but it's regular...
some states require the beeps by law..some don't..
had a long heated discussion last year with one of my utility co's....
they said i hadn't requested that service be switched and were still billing me..
after listening to their own recording? they became quite polite...
couldn't fix their error fast enough...

Tapped lines don't beep. I can monitor the line from the main switch and you won't hear even a click. I can monitor a line from anywhere along your particular pair with a simple butset.. you will maybe hear one click as I connect to the 66 or 110 block. The feds do it differently. They have systems they bring into the main switch and plug directly in. From there they can monitor ALL lines going through that switch. Again.. you won't hear anything.

Depends on the equipment they are using but used to be you could tell your phone was tapped if you had repeated occurences where after you hung up from a call your phone would ring and there was no one there. Old software.. doesn't happen anymore.

Every individual pair is grounded and protected before any monitoring device so the addition of voltage on the line will result in little more than static. You have to consider you're talking about 24 guage twisted pairs.. this means we are talking voltage.. no amperage because the resistance drains it out.. That pair is a mile or two long atleast.. that's alot of resistance.

Would have to be a very simple device connected very close to your source for it to do any dammage. Keep in mind that ringing voltage is 93VAC so any device would be quite capable of atleast that voltage.

here's some stuff...buncha links--the "blurb" mentions the range RD specifies...
Ringing voltaage is higher...I accept 93V.....but normal carrier voltage is 55V. That's what you'll see if you hook up a volt meter when it isn't ringing. Low low, amps, though. I've known people that claimed they could feel it with their finger tips, but they were also apt to believe in goblins and 20 year old virgins.

dial tone is -48 yolts bdgee. And yes you can feel it.. your hands have to be wet though. Ringing voltage however can be felt quite sharply wet or dry and proved to be a very entertaining prank for any newbie running a jumper on the frame.

Yeah, it's not a tap.
Even in Russia close to fifteen years ago you would only hear a small click when they tapped in to your coversation. No way your beeping is a result of that. Is it a cordless phone? Do you have a problem with your battery dying quickly if you leave it off the charger stand? You might just need a new battery. Most cordless phones nowdays beep to alert you your phone needs to recharge.
