i say shoot it down

Please, if we did that everyone would accuse Bush of trying to provoke a war with North Korea....

By the way, I agree, it should be shot down.

North Korea has had missiles capable of hitting Alaska and Hawaii for a few years I believe, but not many people took notice. Maybe this will open a few eyes.

Glass, while we are talking about shooting missiles down...

I never could understand why everyone gave Bush such a hard time about wanting to build a missile defense. They did the same thing with Reagan.

What exactly is so wrong with building a system to shoot down incoming nuclear missiles? It just makes sense.

Instead of building more and more nukes, trying to create a deterrence using a "MAD" policy, you can just keep a few nukes on hand, and rely on your shield to protect you from the incoming missiles. No need to outbuild the enemy's nuke stockpile anymore.

well, the way i heard it was Bush came into office wanting that and 911 kind a changed everything....
as far as treaties with Russia goes? my understanding was that we agreed not to... i'm not sure why we did other than to maintain some sort of appearance of balance with them...
laser based systems have never become reliable enough to depend on them....

one of the things that underlies the *need* for the cold war the Nam war and now the war on terror is that the President has little constitutional power without a war....

i'm not nearly as worried about Bush's power grab today as i am if a real nutcase gets in after Bush has consolidated all of this power... he has consolidated a lot power to the White House....

the country was originally designed to make sure the President shared power in three "legs", but the Congress and the Judicial sytem seem to be all going in the same direction as the White House these days....

i assume (as of today) shooting this one down will require the air force to be "on station"

Please...the country is in shambles no matter what the holy god poet Kim Jong Il says. I say let them posture and wait to shoot down the missle until they get stupid and shoot of the two missles they spent 10 years worth of their GNP to get which have a 50/50 chance of even getting off the ground.

North Korea is a place to be pittied and Kim Jong Il is a joke. It is those who keep him in power who deserve to be ...... <-add your prefered form of punishment here.

Actually, I suspect the Chinese learned from the dim witted hustle and gall of the U.S.S.R. to match the U.S. in weaponry and scientific and engineering hardware that such a race must leave the challenger economically and culturally without buttress.

Patience and the wisedom to compete on grounds of familiarity will buffer zeal for military solutions to a contest, where in time, their massive population and geography grants near infinite advantage.

They are not so dumb as are certain of the sub-politico-sects of our society. They can see better than that. They stand naturally in a powerful economic position.

Personally, I long ago concluded that any "contest" (that will matter) between us (in this situation, us includes all of Europe and probably all of the Americas) and them must orbit about access to energy supplies and potentials. We can't win such a contest if present day technology is the fucus or even a substantial portion of the overall mass that determines orbits.

bdgee? i have no idea what half of what you wrote means...
if you are saying that China is much more of an economic danger to US than they are a physical danger? i agree....

it may be that China allows N Korea to play at this because they would like US to spend even more money to fight the Koreans...(even if it's a cold war)

Well, yeah, that....partially.....

It's sort of like learning to hear and accept Faulkner's bent on war and the Civil War in particular. Eventually, in spite of zeal and patriotism and whose side God is supposed to be on, the guys with the most people and ability to feed the troops is gonna win out.

Now let's add Ho che Min's (sp?)stategy that the side fighting on it's own ground needn't win, just outlast and it prevails and to that add the epocs of Chineses willingness to sit back and wait while their social and cultural rigidity wear away those that would overwhelm them. They are too rich in man power and geography to need to make war. Time and momentum are their allies.

Most particularly, though, Glass...., I realize that the 1000 pound gorilla that is China, should it come to it (and it seems to be taking place), will take control of the world's distribution of petroleum and we can't hope to compete and keep our economy functioning too.

Thus, it behoves us to begin a serious program of the discovery and development energy production methods that are entirely independent of petroleum and coal several years ago! (What if Adolph had begun the study of producing substitutes for petrolium fuels ten year earlier instead of waiting 'til it was openly necessary?)

Posted by glassman on :

coal? we don't "need" to be entirely independant of coal.... we just need to figure out how to breathe more sulfur dioxide without dying....

I see that... our red card was highly questionable--that should be for a tackle from behind--but the foul right after that? ridiculous, there was *no* foul. As you say, they're "diving"

Anyway, thanks again for the reminder. The Ghana win is HUGE

No, coal technology won't solve the problem, just further delay the search for a true alternative.

What is required not only must be entirely independent of fossil fuels (coal and petroleum are too valuable to allow them to be "burned"....we NEED plastics). What is required must produce the very least damage to the environment, also.

By the way, highlight that "invisable" post and it's easy to read:

North Korea fuels missile, readies launch, U.S. officials say

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- North Korea is believed to have completed fueling a missile capable of reaching Alaska, raising the probability of an imminent test launch, U.S. officials said on Sunday.

The United States plans to join Japan in a sharp response if the test goes ahead.

Washington has warned Pyongyang against the launch in a message passed to North Korean diplomats at the United Nations but there was no response, American officials said.

The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Pyongyang could still decide to scrap the launch, but that was unlikely given the complexity of siphoning fuel back out of a missile prepared for launch.

The test is expected to involve a Taepodong-2 missile with an estimated range of 2,175 to 2,670 miles (3,500 to 4,300 kilometers). At that range, parts of Alaska in the United States would be within reach as well as Asia and Russia.

North Korea lacks an operational missile that can hit the continental United States, the California-based Center for Nonproliferation Studies said in a recent report.

Nonetheless it would be Pyongyang's first test of a long-range missile since it stunned the world in August 1998 by firing a Taepodong-1 over Japan that fell into the Pacific Ocean.

U.S. officials have watched with alarm as satellite photos showed launch preparations accelerating at the Musudan-ri missile facility in North Hamgyong province in North Korea's northeast.

The New York Times, quoting American officials, reported on its Web site that booster rockets were loaded onto a launch pad and fuel tanks fitted to a missile. This could not be confirmed, but U.S. and other officials have said satellite images show fuel tanks and key components of a missile positioned at the test site.

The South Korean daily Dong-A Ilbo quoted a Seoul government official as saying the launch could be imminent.

"We think North Korea has poured liquid fuel into the missile propellant built in the missile launching pad. It is at the finishing stage before launching" but the South Korean government did not know if fueling was completed, he said.

Experts say if the missile is not launched 48 hours after fueling, the fuel will start to break down and damage the missile.

The test preparations came as six-country talks on North Korea's nuclear programs are stalemated.

If they test, the North Koreans "undoubtedly would bring upon themselves tougher sanctions from Japan and a cooling (in relations) from South Korea and China so it's not cost free for them, but it suggests they are not happy where they are in terms of the six-party process," said Michael Green, a former senior Asia adviser to President Bush.

Pyongyang now regrets a joint statement adopted by the six countries participating in the negotiations -- the United States, South and North Korea, Japan, Russia and China -- which requires it to give up its atomic ambitions, he said.

It is also unhappy with a U.S. crackdown on financial transactions involving cash earned by the North through illegal activities like currency counterfeiting, he said.

Daniel Pinkston of the Center for Nonproliferation Studies said the launch would be portrayed glowingly in official North Korean media and show the country as advancing its military and scientific prowess.

Some of North Korea's leaders may not be too worried about the response from Washington because "they see the U.S. as doing everything already it can to punish North Korea," Pinkston added.

American and Japanese "assets" -- including satellites and a U.S. guided missile ship -- have been moved into position to serve as long-range surveillance and tracking platforms.

Washington and its allies were caught off guard when Pyongyang last tested a missile eight years ago and they are determined to be ready this time to gather critical intelligence on the North's capabilities.

N Korea threatens to ‘wipe out’ US forces
Web posted at: 6/19/2006 4:48:50
Source ::: AGENCIES
Seoul • North Korea yesterday threatened to “mercilessly wipe out” US forces in case of war during a national meeting to mark leader Kim Jong-Il’s 42 years’ work at the ruling party.

The threat, in a ruling party report carried by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), came as North Korea was reportedly preparing to test-fire a long-range missile despite strong protests from the United States and its allies.

Choe Thae Bok, a ranking Workers’ Party official, said Washington was “hell-bent on provocations of war of aggression” in the report to mark the 42nd anniversary of Kim’s start at the party, KCNA said.

“If the enemies ignite a war eventually, the Korean army and people will mercilessly wipe out the aggressors and give vent to the deep-rooted grudge of the nation,” Choe was quoted as telling the meeting.

North Koreans are customarily advised to watch the televised event, according to Seoul officials.

Japanese and South Korean media said North Korea was planning a missile test for this week.

North Korean technicians have already reportedly assembled a multi-stage Taepodong-2, with a range of 3,500 km to 6,000 km.

CBS News reported that South Korea’s ambassador to the US, Lee Tae-sik, had told Korean correspondents in Washington that Pyongyang may have fuelled a missile already. “Satellite photos confirmed scores of fuel tanks near the missile launch pad,” he said. “We are not sure whether they had already completed fuelling or located (the tanks) there to fuel it.”

South Korea, which seeks to reconcile with N Korea after decades of hostility since the 1950-1953 Korean War, has urged Pyongyang to abandon any plans to test-fire the missile.

But South Korea maintained its usual level of military alert yesterday despite the news reports about an imminent missile test launch. “The military is on the same level of alert as usual. There has been no upgrade in the military alert yet,” a defence ministry spokesman said.

Japan warned North Korea yesterday of “a harsh response” from Tokyo and Washington if it went ahead with the launch of a long-range missile.

Amid reports that a launch was imminent, a Japanese official quoted by the Sankei Shimbun daily said North Korea’s leadership had told people to raise the flag at 0500 GMT and monitor television for a “message to the people”.

The time came and went without any reports of a missile test.

South Korea’s Yonhap news agency said North Korea’s reported instruction might not be linked to the missile launch, saying it could be preparations for another national event. “On June 18 last year, North Korea also told its people to watch an evening television report,” the official told Yonhap.

Japan’s Jiji Press news agency reported that Japanese Defence Agency officials had concluded that a launch was not imminent, but that monitoring would continue.

Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Aso said in a television interview his country would seek an immediate meeting of the UN Security Council if Pyongyang went ahead with a test.

He voiced concern about the possibility of a missile landing on Japan, but toned down a remark made in an earlier interview that Japan would automatically regard this as an attack. “We will not right away view it as a military act,” he said.

He also stopped short of saying what Japan and the US would do in the event of a launch. But he said: “The responses will be rather harsh”.

North Korea shocked the world in 1998 by firing a missile without any warning over Japan into the Pacific Ocean.

North Korea last year declared it had nuclear weapons. Pyongyang has boycotted six-way talks aimed at ending its nuclear weapons programme since November, after the US imposed sanctions on the North for alleged counterfeiting and money-laundering

Correction:

Relentless...didn't you know that the only reason for the war in Iraq was to help Bush cover up the election fiasco in Florida in 2000?

The war on terror never had anything to do with Iraq and Iraq never had anything to do with the war on terror.

what was the reason for the war in Iraq, oh wise Bdgee?

Posted by bdgee on :

To cover the investigations and hide the facts about the 2000 Floria election results and convince you of the emotional he-man body-building persuation that can only see all things as a way to show off your he-man ego that he isn't a deserter.

That last one isn't a difficlut task, is it? Just threaten the death everyone that disagrees and you are satiated.

"Diplomacy be damned, call in the wariers! They'll be too busy worrying about us starting a new military draft and how much money we richer than God Republicans make during wars to notice we are reestablishing our Empire. By the time thay see it, it will be too late."

NR, since the dweeb is no longer with us, your attempts to fill the void he left behind ate noted. He was only a void, so his absence isn't, though it is clear you can't fathom that. You are, without a doubt, uniquely gifted to carry on his tradition of meanness and hate.

Have you a preferred brand of talcum powder you would recommend or can we be assured your experience points to any talcum powder being useful?

I do think, though, your "runny" condition is possibly of diatary or emotional origin or both. Maybe you could try avoiding sugars and caffine and try some Yoga for the upset disposition.

Cheney plays down NK strike calls for a pre-emptive military strike to destroy a potential North Korean missile launch site.

As N. Korean plans a missile test, eyes turn to U.S. interceptors (1:18)
North Korea's actions prompt U.S. concern (2:02)

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- U.S. Vice-President Dick Cheney has played down calls for a pre-emptive military strike to destroy a potential North Korean missile launch site.An op-ed piece in Thursday's Washington Post by William Perry, secretary of defense under former President Bill Clinton, and Ashton Carter, Clinton's assistant secretary of defense, advocates a pre-emptive strike to destroy the missile.

"The United States should immediately make clear its intention to strike and destroy the North Korean Taepodong missile before it can be launched," it said.

Cheney, however, told CNN that, while "I appreciate Bill's advice," such an action could worsen the situation.

no doubt Cheney is trying to figure out how HAL can make a buck off this....
