Everyone has known for years that the levees might not hold. It is discussed far and wide to anyone with ears each time a hurricane is in the Gulf that if it hits New Orleans, the levees will not hold. You don't need a presidential briefing for that information. What is there to question? What can be done about it 24 hours before a hurricane hits anyway. Hurricanes don't get into politics, they are just nature happening.

BTW, that's my favorite Benjamin Franklin quote.

Bush said that no one anticipated the levees collapsing.

Have you watched the news lately? New Orleans looks pretty much the same now as it did the day after Katrina hit.

You ask what can be done about it 24 hours before a hurricane hits anyway?

Well for starters Bush could have cut his vacation short and made a few calls...

I can't believe the only response to this thread is to give the dismal Bush Administration non-response a pass.

Here's what I think Bush/Nagin/Blanco failed to remember - the majority of people that live in and around New Orleans depend on the gov't for EVERYTHING. Food, housing, clothes, transportation, etc.

The levees in N.O. were Nagin's responsibility because they were in his jurisdiction. And what did he do to fix the problem? Nothing, neither he nor the governor ever took any action to solve the problem.

And Bush took zero action knowning a monster storm was about to destroy the city. But lets not take the responsibility away from Nagin and Blanco. They knew full well the magnitude of Katrina, and they knew full well that their constituents have been enslaved to depend on gov't to do everything for them.

Have any of you ever been through a Hurricane?

Been there, done that. We do disaster relief. We spent 4 months in LA, MS, AL, and TX cleaning up after Katrina and Rita, and also housing the displaced.

Why do you ask?

When you live in a hurricane zone (as I have my entire life) you know that 24 hours prior to the hurricane coming, there is no time to do anything like repair a levee. The roads are impassable with traffic. Business are shut down. There are no contractors available to do anything. People are spending their time boarding up, covering up, buying gas, and getting their family to safety. The levees have needed repairs for years and every single year, when a hurricane is in the gulf, repairs are discussed on the news. The government of the State of Louisiana has had literally years do do something about that, including petitioning the federal government for assistance. I am not trying to say that the Bush administration is all that great. I am saying that it is ludicrous to point out that he was given a "briefing" regarding a well-known fact and then say that proves he was negligent. That's just silly. You can't do anything 24 hours before a hurricane but get out of the way!

As far as depending on the government, if a person does that, then shame on them. In my town, it is difficult to find employees at all even though there are people everywhere. The restaurants are still having to close early because they can't get workers. McDonalds and Wendys are offering $1000 signing bonuses and still can't get employees. All these people are getting FEMA trailers and FEMA money and are not willing to work! I don't know that we need any more of that kind of assistance.

yikes...the point was not about shoring up the levees in 24 hrs--the point is Bush et al were warned the emergency effort stood a good chance of being overwhelmed. Instead, he took the position that it was all hunky-dory...

Play on, Nero!

I see....I did miss the point! Again, I am not taking up for Bush. He has said and done some idiotic things. I can tell you that I never imagined the devasation that this storm would bring. We have these all the time. I have friends who came back to find only a slab with maybe their front steps left. I don't think any of us thought it would be that bad.

That said....FEMA or whomever is responsible for disaster response from our government SHOULD be ready for worst case scenario.

I've thought this from day one. And cheers to the kid who stole the school bus and took it to Houston full of people. Nagin should have released all of those busses.

Has anybody seen the latest installment from "Katrina's Funniest Home Videos"?

Well, in case you've missed it, we have the oh-so competant and compassionate Kathleen Blanco claiming the levees would be safe and there was no threat of a breach.....

Compassion is Blanco's middle name.

And I just loved how Nagin got on camera to tell everyone how he had given orders to the president and other higher ups that they needed to get his job figured out and then do it for him. What a first-class act.

This is right out of the Democratic playbook....

Nagin and Blanco blame their incompetance, mismanagement, and failures on the White House. Yet now we see that Blanco was just as cool, calm, and collected as the Bush was, and she did nothing to mobilize an evacuation or to prepare for emergency operations.

What a joke she is! And what a joke Nagin is! And I'm sure Nagin will get re-elected. Democrats always turn a blind eye... lets not forget how many times Democrat crack-head extraordinaire Marion Barry was re-elected.

You might want to use a different description than "crack-head" when defending the Bush administration. LOL

There is a defense for the Bush Administration?

Posted by Gordon Bennett on :

I should have said "attempting to defend"...

Well there really is no argument when it comes to the Bush group , because most of them are publicly stating they are taking full responsibility let them have it and charge them with criminal charges
