I myself plan on retiring to a small town in North Carloina within the next 5 years. Can't handle the big cities or even the medium sized ones anymore. My wife and I are looking for some peace and quiet. What's your preference?

Posted by ohdagagain on :

Where in NC? I prefer the small town. People are friendlier and not as much crime. I enjoy living near the city though. I am in Waldorf MD right now, which has some good parts, but DC is moving down so there are some trashy parts. Good luck on your retirement.

If your going to move to small town it would be a good idea to buy up the land around you. If you can afford it it would be worth it. Ive seen many instances around where I live were people move to a small quiet town only to have developers come in and build apartment complexes nearby. Sometimes the city follows you espeacially in this time of growth

I grew up in a small town (live in the country now) and try to stay away from cities. The population of the small town was about 110. Give me 100+ acres of woodland and a log cabin in the middle and this country fella will be just fine.

love the big city. lots of diversity-great resturants, music, always something different to do. if i want peace and quiet i stay at home--if i wish to be in the country, i drive a few miles. small towns just seem to have a large population of- uh-um-lets just say people with a narrow point of view. not very open-minded. but thats just my experience--i could be wrong. i love to hear good live music--so thats always close by. and of course my profession dictates that i be in a bigger city. not many jazz venues in the country

i hate small town living...all the negatives of the city but not enough of the benefits..(except cable LOL)

i like the city a lot,
BUT i LOVE the country..

suburbia is a cultural wasteland, and small-towns are full of narrow-minded peole...

i prefer to target shoot off the FRONT porch, and 2 dogs ain't enough but 7 is too many [Big Grin]

I've lived in both. While I like all that a big city has to offer (shopping, restaurants, entertainment), I like living in the country the best. It's peaceful. People are friendly(most of them). The crime rate is lower. It's an ATV rider's paradise. [Wink]

just don't drive your ATV thru my rifle range [Big Grin]

it's just that these 20X plus scopes only show a very narrow feild at 400yds [Big Grin] might not seeya [Wink]

I grew up on a 600 acre farm (15 mi from the nearest town of 350 people - nearest neighbor 1/2 mile away) and lived in NYC as well. Like both for different reasons but for retirement prefer the slower pace outside the city.

let me guess, you had to walk fifteen miles each way (uphill both ways) to school with no shoes and the blizzards started in OCT and didn't melt till MAY, but you were never late [Big Grin]

And don't forget the part about no shoes.

We must realize that some of these things were true and were not vary funny at the time.

Ok, smartazz 5 star. Had to walk 1.5 mi. to catch sch. bus, was on top of mtn (so was basically flat), had 1 pr of shoes and 2 changes of clothes, the blizzards started in Nov (had fireplace going one cold 4th of July and snowed in one year for two wks) and probably was late sometimes. Your part about the snow melting in May was correct! LOL

PS: Actually went to a one-room schoolhouse. I was so great, they put me in charge of ringing the bell and carrying the school's drinking water from a nearby house in a pail! There were also "Girls" and "Boys" separate outhouses.

I'm not quite THAT old, [Smile] but I did sit along the road, and pump my arm up and down, to get the big trucks to beep at me, and I was allowed to run around the neighborhood alone, when I was small, because there was never any crime where I lived! We only had three channels on TV, and cartoons started at six in the morning, on Saturday, and all we had, was Woody Woodpecker, Casper the Friendly ghost, Bugs Bunny, and Archie! [Smile] My parents watched Hee Haw, and Laurence Welk! [Smile]

That's what we're striving for lil, a smaller town in somewhat close proximity to a decent sized city. There's a cool town in North Carolina named Asheville. Decent sized, around 100 thousand I think and it's surrounded by a bunch of small communities. Looks beautiful.

Been there. It's a very nice area. Cost of living descent. You have your choice of having the city at your fingertips, but have peace and quiet in the areas just outside the city limits. Not a great distance away from the beach, yet away from the danger of hurricanes. If you like racing, Rockingham isn't very far away either. GLTY!!! [Smile]

They don't race nascar at the Rock anymore. Asheville is a nice area. Just head north a little.

What do they do there now? I haven't been to Rockingham in a while. Bypassed it on my way to "the beach".

Kate, my rating is now down to 4.77 with 12 votes...thanks for the 1....
i note that you have one vote, obviously a five so you'll note that i didn't return the favor...
i don't really know how the rating system works, but if you bother to calculate a 4.77 on 12 votes, you'll discern that it cannot be a direct proportion..

because 4.77 times twelve is not a whole number....therefore there is some sort of wieghting system in effect...

obviously,i should be pleased if i still have five stars after 100 votes, but it won't affect my behaviour or attitude about my postings here...
if everybody loves all of my posts, i haven't been HONEST enough, cuz Kate, the TRUTH smells mostly pretty bad... the markets have a simple underlying principle that is unavoidable, they will ALWAYS do the MOST damage to the MOST people possible...
good luck to you...
