Trying to ask questions to figure things out for school. About to start my 2nd college year and I am a business major, and was looking to go more direct rather then such a broad business major. I have always enjoyed the little I have learned from this forum and my personal experience, along with books and would like to learn more. I am leaning towards finance major, possibly leading to financial engineering masters which seems to be geared towards investing, correct me if I am wrong. I understand you do not need a degree to invest people’s money but I would imagine it would put you ahead of the game. Anyone know anything about this topic? Or these majors? Would appreciate anyone input, good or bad. Thanks

I've never had a career in investing but from what I read and others already told you, you don't need a degree for such things. But it does help. If you want to eventually be a big time hedge fund manager down the road. Just get a business or finance degree and enter one of the big firms such as Goldman Sachs, Bear Stearns, Morgan Stanley etc. in NYC and work your way up. Take their training programs and learn everything you can from them and make as much money as you can while your at it and put some aside to start your own fund etc... then break off from them like other successful fund managers have. Make alot of contacts and put them all in your rolodex so to speak.

If you want to be a trader....get a job at a prop firm...the best is hold brothers. A minor or major in math would be a good Idea, they like you to have good math skills. If they hire you they will train you be the best traders at their firm in every style of trading.

Basicly you trade the firms money and you get a percent of the profits. They give you huge margin and you are trained by the best traders. Plus you get the best trading software and tools out there. You also have a news/chat system to communicate with other traders at the firm.
