SANTA BARBARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--OCCM--
Rural Telephone Companies Can Now Purchase Occam "Triple Play" Equipment to Build Broadband Networks with Low-Interest Federal Funds
Occam Networks Inc. (OTCBB: OCCM), a supplier of innovative Ethernet and IP-based loop carrier equipment to telecommunications companies worldwide, today announced that its BLC 6000 Broadband Loop Carrier is now available on the United States Department of Agriculture's Rural Utilities Service (RUS) List of Materials. The BLC 6000 "triple play" broadband loop carrier received acceptance from the RUS committee at the conclusion of a successful field trial with Virginia-based Citizens Telephone Cooperative. The RUS listing enables qualified rural telephone companies like Citizens to purchase products such as the BLC 6000 with long-term, low-interest loans from the U.S. government with the goal of providing rural areas with the same services as those available to larger metropolitan areas. "Citizens was faced with a rapidly growing demand for high-speed digital subscriber line (DSL) Internet access services," said Danny Vaughn, network manager for Citizens Telephone Cooperative. "We needed a solution that not only enabled us to provide POTS and DSL but also provided us with the ability to offer our customers advanced video services in the future. "We selected the BLC 6000 over the other products we considered because it was the best match for what we need now and the future. We have been pleased with its overall performance and with Occam's responsiveness when we've needed support. Their inclusion on the RUS List of Materials will help us to purchase additional BLC 6000 Systems to expand our broadband network more quickly." Occam Networks' BLC 6000 System is based on the Intelligent Blade Interconnect Architecture (IBIA), which provides cost-effective low-, medium- or high-capacity configurations. The "blades" are deployed in all configurations in both the remote terminal and the central office to enable universal sparing, lower cost-of-platform deployment and very simple training and operations management. The system allows carriers to distribute a high-capacity system in low-capacity environments and scale to meet the demands of a rapidly expanding subscriber base. "Achieving RUS acceptance is an important milestone for Occam and the rural telephone companies it serves," said Russ Sharer, vice president of sales and marketing for Occam Networks. "The availability of RUS funding for our products will pave the way for these companies to build broadband networks that can deliver triple play services, high-speed Internet access and video, and will lead to greater adoption of IP technologies in the telecommunication industry."
