ALPS' (Pink Sheet:APELY) Communication Devices Division
(with offices at the Soma Plant in Soma City, Fukushima Prefecture and
the Kakuda Plant in Kakuda City, Miyagi Prefecture, Katsumi Tobita,
Director and General Manager) has received ISO/TS 16949:2002
certification of its quality management system.
The certification was registered on December 19, 2003, following
inspection by the Japan Quality Assurance (JQA) Organization.
The scope of this certification extends to the design,
development, and manufacturing of automotive radio frequency (RF)
equipment by the Communication Devices Division.
ISO/TS 16949:2002 is a certification of quality management systems
that fuses the requirements of the automobile industries of the
various European nations, based on QS-9000, the quality management
system of the U.S. "Big Three" automakers. The 2002 certification is a
stricter version of the ISO 9001:2000 standard, with additional
requirements specific to the automobile industry regarding automotive
devices, and with greater stress on customer-specific requirements.
The QS-9000 certification acquired by the Communication Devices
Division in December 2002 will be phased out by December 2006, and the
transition period for ISO/TS 16949:1999 will expire in December 2004.
It is therefore anticipated that many firms will be implementing
programs aimed at obtaining ISO/TS 16949:2002 certification. With its
eye on the expansion of its automotive RF products business on a
global scale, the Communication Devices Division has become one of
only 7 firms in a 180-company field to acquire QS-9000 certification
from JQA at this early date.
All companies in the ALPS Group are focused on the market for
next-generation automotive information services such as telematics.
This ISO/TS 16949:2002 certification is a part of the infrastructure
the Communication Devices Division will need to participate in this
market, which is expected to grow rapidly.
