Sun's Revolutionary New Java Platform Enterprise Edition 5 Now Available
Tuesday May 16, 11:34 am ET
Java Platform Takes Another Quantum Leap With Major Improvements in Service Oriented Architecture (SOA), Web Services, and Application Creation

SAN FRANCISCO, JAVAONE (SM) CONFERENCE, May 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW - News), creator and leading advocate of Java(TM) technology, today launched the Java Platform, Enterprise Edition 5, the most significant update to enterprise Java technology in six years. Java EE 5 is the industry's premier platform for enterprise web services creation and deployment and is established in the Java developer community as the most popular choice for Java technology and web services development. The Enterprise Java Platform has been downloaded more than five million times and is supported by more than 30 licensees that market 28 Java EE compatible-products.

The Java EE 5 platform (http://www.java.sun.com/javaee) makes development easier, faster and more cost-efficient and provides support for all of the latest SOA technologies, including a major revision to the programming model, updated web services standards and simplified web application creation. The platform consists of a Reference Implementation (RI), Technology Compatibility Kit (TCK) and Software Development Kit (SDK) that includes the free Sun Java System Application Server Platform Edition 9.0 developed in open source through Project GlassFish(SM), part of the OpenJava(TM) EE community. Backward compatibility of Java EE 5 with previous versions of the Java Enterprise platform preserves the skill sets of current Java Enterprise developers and protects investments in enterprise applications.

"Java EE 5 takes the drudgery out of creating applications, reduces the time spent worrying about enterprise Java plumbing and allows developers to concentrate on business logic," said Karen Padir, vice president of Enterprise Java Platform at Sun. "Sun Java System Application Server Platform Edition 9.0 is the first robust, commercial, Java EE 5 compliant application server and is 100 percent derived from open source through Project GlassFish), part of the OpenJava EE community."

The Java EE 5 SDK includes new support for Business Process Execution Language (BPEL) and business intelligence, allowing orchestration of complex business processes and workflows, spanning web services, systems, people, and companies. Also available with the Java EE 5 SDK are preview versions of the SOA Starter Kit and NetBeans(TM) Enterprise Pack 5.5. The SOA Starter Kit includes the OpenJava ESB beta, which provides a standard way to implement component-based services and enterprise integration frameworks based on web services protocols and open standards. The NetBeans Enterprise Developer Pack 5.5 gives developers access to tools that enable early support for development of Java EE 5 applications including web modules, Enterprise Java Beans 3.0 modules and the Java Persistence API.

Pricing and Availability

The Java EE 5 SDK, Reference Implementation and TCK are available now. The new SDK includes documentation and tools for developers to learn Java EE 5 and accelerate the creation of new enterprise applications. It is available as a free download on the Solaris(TM) Operating System, Linux and Windows platforms at Sun's Developer Network (http://java.sun.com/javaee/downloads).

Developers using Java EE SDK 5.0 or Sun Developer Tools and technologies to leverage Java EE 5, can get support through Sun's new Sun Developer Expert Assistance service program at: http://developers.sun.com/services. In addition, Sun is offering a special promotion for Sun Developer Network members where they can save 50 percent when they buy a 5-pack of service incidents for Sun Developer Expert Assistance.

I think you are mistaken repo and coulda, Ive been in this for a short while and the company is working well and actually growing. This is a shortfall and will recover quickly, just as EDO also took a hit. It will take some time but once everyone see's the real improvements they have been making SUNW may actually start to go above the $5 mark that it's been hovering around.

Sun Microsystems Also Launches Program to Support Development of Online Video Games; Game Developer NCsoft Voices Support of Project Darkstar Platform

SAN FRANCISCO, March 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW - News) announced plans today at the 2007 Game Developers Conference in San Francisco to open source Project Darkstar, a ground-breaking online game server platform written entirely in Java(TM) technology, at the 2007 Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. "Project Darkstar is proving to be an important technology foundation in the exploding multiplayer online game marketplace," said Chris Melissinos, chief gaming officer, Sun Microsystems. "By open sourcing Darkstar technology, we will help enable the widest possible market for online game developers and remove their burden of having to build enterprise-grade server solutions, leaving them to do what they do best-build great game experiences."

Game developers can download the latest version of Project Darkstar at www.projectdarkstar.com. This new release of Project Darkstar features a simpler programming interface for increased productivity; plug-in APIs to facilitate integration of third party extensions; and enhancements for scalability, robust performance, and fault-tolerant operation. The source code for Project Darkstar will become available under a GPL license in the coming months, and further details will be provided at Sun's JavaOne conference May 9 in San Francisco.

Leading MMORGP Developer NCsoft Validates Sun Technology

Validating the strength of the Project Darkstar technology, NCsoft, the leader in the worldwide Massive Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game Platform (MMORGP) market, is currently prototyping new games on the Darkstar platform. "Project Darkstar was instrumental in helping us initiate prototyping of a new online game project internally at NCsoft," said Chris Mayer, vice president of product development for NCsoft North America. "The Darkstar technology team proved very supportive and we were up and running quickly. We very much appreciate Sun's initial efforts in developing the kind of server technologies needed to jump-start online projects."

Sun's Darkstar Playground

In conjunction with the latest release of Project Darkstar, Sun also initiated the Darkstar Playground which will allow approved developers to gain access to server resources-provided and operated by Sun-to start developing their online games. Developers interested in participating in the Darkstar Playground are encouraged to visit Sun's booth or www.projectdarkstar.com to apply and learn more about the program. The playground will be live at JavaOne '07 in May.

Kohlberg To Purchase Dollar General
Andrew Farrell, 03.12.07, 9:40 AM ET

Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, fresh off the largest private equity buyout in history, is also acquiring Dollar General in a move that sent the ultra-discount retailer's stock soaring Monday.

Dollar General (nyse: DG - news - people ) shares were trading up $4.72, or 28.1%, at $21.50 in pre-market trading after the discount store chain said it agreed to be acquired by affiliates of Kohlberg for approximately $7.3 billion, including approximately $380 million of debt.

Under the deal, shareholders will receive $22 in cash for each share of common stock, a 31.1% premium on Friday's price, when shares closed at $16.78.

Kohlberg Kravis Roberts has been busy lately. In January Sun Microsystems (nasdaq: SUNW - news - people ) announced it had received an investment of $700 million from the firm. (See: "Here Comes The Sun".) And in February, Kohlberg joined a group of other private equity firms to announce a $32 billion private buyout--the largest ever--of the utility company TXU (nyse: TXU - news - people ). (See: "The Biggest Buyout Ever".)

Dollar General said it expects the deal to close in the third quarter, pending shareholder and regulatory approval. The Dollar General board unanimously approved the deal and is recommending shareholders vote for it.
The announcement of the buyout of Dollar General also lifted shares of similar chains. In pre-market trading, Family Dollar Stores (nyse: FDO - news - people ) gained 17 cents, or 0.6%, to $28.95, Fred's (nasdaq: FRED - news - people )jumped 41 cents, or 2.8%, to $14.90 and 99 Cents Only Stores (nyse: NDN - news - people ) was up 29 cents, or 2.0%, to $14.70.
