I would be interested in seeing a more articulated breakdown on what that money goes to in those states. Indian reservations and people maybe for some?
"That's according to the consumer finance site Wallet Hub, which crunched federal tax and spending data and then ranked states from most to least dependent on Uncle Sam. "
In finance there are numerous ways and formulas to come up with the data you want to project. I bet there are formulas you could use to drastically alter that map in the article.

We have been hearing a lot about "freeloading" from Republicans; but the data shows that most of the freeloading is done by the Republicans themselves.
There are states where the federal tax revenues gathered from the state are greater than federal government spending on the state; and there are states where the federal government spending on the state is greater than the federal tax revenues gathered from the state. The six states with the greatest positive difference between federal revenues and federal spending - Delaware, Minnesota, New Jersey, Connecticut, New York and Illinois - are all solidly Democratic. Whereas of the six states with the greatest negative difference between federal revenues and federal spending - Alaska, New Mexico, Mississippi, Virginia, West Virginia and Alabama - only New Mexico and Virginia have voted Democratic in the last election; and Virginia has voted Republican in every previous election since 1964.
What this means is that the Democratic-voting states provide more money for the federal government, and the Republican-voting states get more money from federal government. So if there is freeloading in America, it is done the most by the Republican states.
The greatest federal revenue per capita is found (in descending order) in Delaware, Connecticut, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Nebraska and Illinois. Excepting Nebraska, these are all solid Democratic states.
The greatest federal spending per capita is found (in descending order) in Virginia, Alaska, Maryland, New Mexico, Hawaii, North Dakota, Mississippi, South Dakota, Alabama, Wyoming and Louisiana. Most of these states (Maryland, New Mexico and Hawaii excepted) vote Republican.
Is there freeloading in America then? You bet there is.
But the people and places that do it the most are not the people and places that get accused of doing it the most. Indeed the worst of freeloading is done by the accusers themselves

The GOP have often criticized the middle class for taking Social Security, medicare etc. The GOP is freeloading on the generocity of the middle class by refusing to pay their fair share in taxes. The middle class carries the load of the greedy and selfish rich man.I know of not one Republican that has refused to accept these things because they don't believe in them! Socialism with a Harry S. Truman quote. " The Republicans will try to tell you that everything the government does for the country is socialism. They will go to the people and say:"Did you see that social security check you got the other day-you thought that was good for you didn't you? That's just too bad! That's nothing in the world but Socialism.Did you see that new flood control dam the government is building over there for the protection of your property? Sorry,-that's awful socialism. That new hospital that they are building is socialism. Price supports, more socialism for the farmers.Minimum wage laws? Socialism for labor.Socialism is bad for you my friend.Everybody knows that. And here you are with your new car, and your home and better opportunities for the kids and a television set__You are just surrounded by socialism. Now the Republicans say."That's a terrible thing my friend and the only way out of this sinkhole of socialism is to vote for the Republican ticket."
