Due To U.S. Obesity, Global Population Is 17 Million Tons Overweight By Tara Culp-Ressler on Jun 18, 2012 at 12:15 pm
Although the United States represents just 5 percent of the global population, it contributes to almost one-third of the world’s weight due to obesity, researchers from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine concluded in a study released today. The U.S.’s rising obesity rate may lead to a future food scarcity problem, the researchers warned.
The study calculated the weight of the global population at 316 million tons, and estimated that about 17 million tons of that figure is due to the growing numbers of people who are overweight. Increasing levels of fatness around the world will threaten future food security, since current levels of obesity could have the same impact on global resources as an additional half billion people.
Researchers concluded that although the average global body weight is 137 pounds, there are huge differences across regions. The average is 178 pounds in North America and 127 pounds in Asia, for example. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the United States has the highest biomass of any other nation:
The increased global demand for food is likely to contribute to higher food prices. The researchers point out that affluent nations like the United States will be less impacted by rising prices than poorer countries will — despite the fact that the U.S. is the root of the problem.
Rates of obesity in the United States show no signs of abating. In fact, some estimates predict that 75 percent of Americans will be overweight by 2020.

I don't think its snobbish to say the us has more fat people than any other nation...and its got zero to do with politics. we just eat more crappy food, and more of it than anyone else in the world! we are a rich, fat, greedy nation. and come to think of it, the US as a whole are a very snobbish ppl. We think we know better about everything ... we,re pathetic aholes. Thats what the rest of the world thinks of us.

I think a lot of the world is jealous of us.
For many everything is greener on the other side even though that might not be the case.
I try more and more to enjoy what i have and not worry about what i don't have.
Is seems easier to be bitter as i grow older, but that takes a lot away from so many things that are enjoyable yet free.
Just not sure that i want to worry about who is fat etc. although i guess we all pay, but then again we pay for a lot worst things like...WAR
For many being fat is not really a choice, although i am sure i will hear it for that comment.

our overweight problem mostly comes from two things IMO.
flour and sugar.
we didn't evolve to eat grains ground so fine as we do now. we evolved eating/cracking grains with our teeth which are hard to digest. Now we pre-chew them into fine powder which is much more accessible to our digestive enzymes.
Sugar- same basic principle we evolved to get some sugar from eating fruits. Now we drink milk full of lactose, cane sugar and corn sugar (sucrose and fructose) are added to almost every processed food we eat and most drinks are made from them.....
as to fats and oils? they add to the problem too, but not as much as sugar and flour..
brin chemistry of rats has been demonstrated to change just as it does in drug addiction when rats are given high fat diets similar to ours... ( nature neuroscince march 2010 http://www.nature.com/neuro/index.html )
of course sugar runs every cell in our body, so it's brain food -
i don't keep sodas in the house, we don't eat cheeseburgers but we do eat hamburgers... i get arguments about it, but theres a reason they call bacon cheeseburgers a heart attack on a bun... we almost never serve bisuits or bread as side dish along with potaotes or rice- some people have bread (flour) as side at every meal-
