Gingrich Calls Child Labor Laws ‘Stupid’, Wants To Replace Janitors With Poor Kids | In an anti-government diatribe that would be funny if he weren’t serious, GOP presidential candidate New Gingrich told a crowd at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government yesterday that child labor laws are “tragic” and “stupid” and have “done more to create income inequality in the United States than any other single policy.” In a proposal that he freely admitted was “extraordinarily radical,” he called for firing all school janitors and replacing them with poor students. Politico reports:
“This is something that no liberal wants to deal with,” Gingrich said. “Core policies of protecting unionization and bureaucratization against children in the poorest neighborhoods, crippling them by putting them in schools that fail has done more to create income inequality in the United States than any other single policy. It is tragic what we do in the poorest neighborhoods, entrapping children in, first of all, child laws, which are truly stupid.” [...]
“Most of these schools ought to get rid of the unionized janitors, have one master janitor and pay local students to take care of the school. The kids would actually do work, they would have cash, they would have pride in the schools, they’d begin the process of rising.”
Newt should have been running for office in 1856

I looked the story up and saw some articles on it. I dont see a problem for inner city schools paying kids if they want to do some kind of cleaning or whatever. These are poor kids coming from homes that more than likely do not provide an allowance or any money. Most of these homes are single parent as well. I had an allowance growing up so I did my chores for money so I could buy the things I wanted. I was too young to get a W-2 job.
Im surprised ray you would be against a 12 year old wanting to earn some money on the weekends doing groundskeeping at their local school (something they could take pride in) in order to help put food on the table for say a family of 4 kids and a single mother. What is so wrong with that? Should we just increase the amount of welfare spending? Should we continue on a path of dependence and not encouragement?
Scenario:
I am 12 years old, black, living in a poor area of Atlanta, GA. I have no idea who my father is, and I have 2 brothers and a sister who are younger than me. I am the man of the house.
My junior high has a weekend work program that teaches lawn/landscaping skills on school district grounds within walking distance. My mom receives government assistance, but things like diapers, formula, etc add up fast and we never have enough. In order to help offset this I eat only at school lunch and not dinner at home to save food.
Ray, why would you be against this kid doing some work? Would you rather him do what most others do and see the fast money in selling drugs? Selling crack cocaine and ending up sooner or later in the judicial system?
As for firing janitors and replacing them with kids i think that is just stupid. Kids cant do the things adult janitors do, but they COULD help. We just need to get creative in some of these school districts.

Gingrich Tells ABC News: ‘I’m Going to Be The Nominee’
“I’m going to be the nominee,” the former Speaker told ABC News. “It’s very hard not to look at the recent polls and think that the odds are very high I’m going to be the nominee.”
I guess he forgot how fast the polls can change. It would make sense that he would get the nomination though. I wonder who he would want for his running mate.
