The highly anticipated “Increase Diversity Bake Sale” organized by U.C. Berkeley College Republicans finally took place on Tuesday — and with explosive results.
The bake sale, which based its price structure on race — higher pricing for white and Asian students, lower pricing for black, Hispanic and female students – was intended to expose the hypocrisy of proponents of CA Senate Bills 185 and 387, that seek to re-introduce Affirmative Action by allowing the university system to base student admissions on ethnicity.

I have to say that I thought it was a great idea. There are some that will say that the cupcake sale was absurd and/or racist, but to do so is an admission that programs such "Affirmative Action" is equally absurd and/or racist.
Very effective way to illustrate a certain aspect of American culture in a microcosm.

You would think they might have something better to do like study.
Then again it is college and it is generally younger people, there are worst things they could be doing, i could attest to that... each to their own kicks

Actually, that is obvious dum dum. I know it was Republicans who did this event, its not new. Stossel did one in a mall not too long ago. Its the fact that we still put people in categories based on race in 2011. Affirmative action proponents call Republicans racist, yet fight for agendas that give special treatment to people based on race alone. Tell me why we still do that if we are all created equal.
I seem to remember meeting many "southern Democrats" over the years who are more racist than any Republican I know.
And yes, I did read the article. I read this story days ago before it was posted here. It points out a flaw in the thinking of the political correctness police.

to be more realistic? they have the prices backwards, to represent how things really are today the white cupcakes should be cheapest and the asians should be the same price.
why? because to a child born in Watts LA thru no fault of his/her own? The cupcakes should be unobtainable, they might as well be 50$.
i know some people like to beleive everything has been fixed and we live in a in a post racist era, but that is simply not true.
there are no statistics produced anywhere that show that minority equality or even "parity" has been achieved. There are more women than men in college now, but women still earn only 75% of what men earn in the same jobs...

However, the thing is--we *have* made enough progress that *were* some price structure like this able to be posted, plenty of us have enough "other" friends outside our own gender, ethnicity, etc. that we would quickly assemble the work-around that I suggested in my lighthearted reply.

What about the fire department that had to lower the test score standards to pass just so minorities could pass it because they could not pass the normal one? Is that how we are supposed to engineer a great nation? Dumb down the standards so other races can get gifted a position based on their color and not qualification??

i highly recommend Gun Germs and Steel, it gives you a good explanation as to how cultures develop, no it does not have all the answers but it's very good start.
as to the tests? there is a cultural bias in them. It's not even a consciuos thing.
Now, here's where it gets tricky. Do you see yourself as a Conformist? I don't beleive that you do. Yet you are expecting others to be Conformist. the Goal of POST-Racism is not to lose your ability to distinguish differences between people and cultures, but to learn to celebrate the differnces and accentuate the gifts that each race/culture has to offer the world community. and before you get angry about the world community? my point is that change is constant. Marylin's "beauty" was culturally defined, as beauty tends to be. I have studied art history a little, and facial beauty has changed over the centuries too. Alot of the older paintings have rather "ugly" faces in idealised (not portrait) paintings. Most of them are half naked and the women portrayed with transluscent to pink skin, big bellies,thick thighs etc... That was an ideal then....
Of course we all have our own choice to makes about beauty, but there is a cultural "norm" that can be extracted and used.
i do not like the wya affirmative action is being executed, however, we are doing better than we ever did. Affrimative action for Native Americans was brutal, yet done by people who beleived they had the best of intentions.
IMO? th ereal problem in america today is that we think people should be in school til tehy are full adults. Undergrad College level classes are not that advanced, and "college" is more about the "social experince" than it is about recruiting and developing human talent. We are trying to put everybody in charge of somebody else in America, in the end? Somebody stil has to take otu the trash, and nobody wants to.....
One of the richest people in China made her mney buying our garbage.... that ought to tell US all something important.

i understand very well how wiki works.it is peer-reviewed, just like the better scientific journals are, and that means it only has as much integrity as the people who contribute, either by publishing or editing. I find it to be a good jumping off point for any research tho. For instance my curiosity in physics without having been a trained physicist is well satisfied by being able to safari on wiki, each link to next articles provides more links and i can literally get lost for hours studying very well peer rviewed mini-articles that are usually written in such away that i can understand them without having had the primer courses. No, i'll never be a pro physicist, but that isn't my goal.
