U.K. faces sharpest spending cuts since WWII It's 'time to turn around the debt supertanker,' Treasury chief says
LONDON — Britain will cut half a million jobs, sharply reduce welfare payments and raise the retirement age as part of an unprecedented cost-cutting drive that will test the strength of both the economy and the ruling coalition.
Treasury chief George Osborne on Wednesday announced the country's largest cuts to public spending since World War II as part of a five-year austerity plan.
Osborne confirmed he had ordered 83 billion pounds ($130 billion) in spending cuts through 2015, which he claims are necessary along with tax increases to wipe out a spending deficit that reached 156 billion pounds last year.
'Unavoidable' As many as 500,000 public sector jobs will be lost and dozens of scheduled government programs halted. He said that even Queen Elizabeth II would take a hit, cutting her royal household budget by 14 percent over four years under the plans.

in America the same depth of job cuts as a percentage of the workforce would equal about 1.5 million jobs....
that would increase our *reported* jobless rate from 9.X to 12.X%
now consider that Britain was foolish enough to join US in Iraq and borrowed the money to do it too. Their economy is only 2.3 trillion compared to our 14 trillion. Which is really not too bad when you consider they 1/5th the amount of people we do
pay most attention to the fact that they are raising taxes, this going to make some people here scream, but as i have been saying since Bush cut taxes? This was inevitable and it's inevitable here too:

Households with an income of more than £48,000 will each lose about five per cent of their annual earnings by paying thousands of pounds extra in tax while losing benefits and access to public services, Treasury figures indicate.

So because some kind of welfare or government assisted program is nice and helps people, but they have no money to fund it...that somehow they have to keep the program?
Why arent they talking about social security reform here in the US? That was one thing Al Gore I believe was into. Some kind of locked box theory I think. If SS funds go to the treasury first THEN go to who knows where.....wtf?

Its just one little piece that keeps adding up glass, you have to admit there is a trend.
Also, for all of you here who love increased government spending and influence...what SHOULD Britain do differently? What do you do when you are broke? Keep spending?

the title implies Muslims complained. NONE did. it's bullcrap... i've got cropdusters here that i would like to shut down.
i've lieved in places where they are shut down too. but i don't because they make money, some people hate to see other people make money that's all that is about..
it happens in every town in this country every year....
that's why i live outside of town... no laws here, and no one to complain.... i learned that 35 years ago.. of course that means when my neighbor burns plastic in their yard, (which they do)and stinks up the 'hood? i have to live with that too.. or go over and piss on their fire when they ain't looking

Why does your neighbor burn plastic in their yard, isnt that kinda weird? When I was a kid I was always making fires and burning anything that looked like it was fun to burn. Plastic was always fun, it drips fireballs if it gets going good.

they burn wire down to get eh insulation off, they burn garbage in their fire pit which is usaully a round bottom offa river buoy with legs welded on.... They don't have enough sense to cut holes in the bottom for airflow and the fires stink to high heaven...The plastic soda bottles and other detritus they throw in smolders for huors...
there's even a statewide burn ban on and i can go find two right now within 1/10th mile, i smell thmem... it's
